You learned the wrong thing though. You're NOT allowed to "get behind your hand as far as you can" as Brzenk put it, because you're not allowed to cross the center with your shoulder.

the bit about pushing with your tricep is totally false. It's a body movement. You can even see him here using his core and pushing the body behind the arm to win - not using his tricep but his core. He does it right but he describes it totally wrong. He also ends up too far under the table after one of those moves... Though he still shows the basic moves pretty well. It is amazing how long people will talk for without teaching shit. Devon spends 3 hours and doesn't teach you how to even top roll in that time lmfao. I think he wanted people to call him back on a regular basis to hear another single piece of advice given in 3 hours. But people didn't bite. AFter the first shit show they didn't want him back :P

It's an advanced technique. like the flop press and king's move, if you go for it ill prepared the risk of injury is probably higher than a standard hook or toproll. The flop press tends to be like this for a lot of people, too. Devon said training side pressure specifically lead to injury, but he finds he doesn't really need to train it directly as he still improves from other training and he can rely more heavily on direct side pressure if he does need to. He just doesn't rely on it as his primary weapon. Personally I think training the tendons and connective tissue with straight arm exercises like the planche, front lever, back lever, and even iron cross should be good for building the connective tissue integrity in the elbows and shoulders.

It of course takes strength as well, but in raw numbers in the gym Brzenk wasn't necessarily the strongest guy. The efficacy of the techniques is lost in the subtlety of the fine details of the biomechanics. Even Johnny Walker said about John's technique "he knew something I didn't". I guarantee there's much more to it than what's presented in this video - this is just a simple yet generally detailed overview of the most prominent techniques.
