Great to hear Crosby talk about Russ Columbo, an all but forgotten singer. He died tragically when a friend lit a match on an old antique pistol and was shot. He composed the songs "Prisoner of Love", "You Call It Madness (But I Call It Love)," "Too Beautiful For Words," "When You're in Love", "My Love", "Let's Pretend There's a Moon," and "Hello Sister."

@@briteness : That is interesting, since Tiny Tim was born in 1932. Columbo died in 1934, after being hospitalized for a week from a gunshot wound. I actually have a reprint (from off microfilm) of the New York Times reporting on this incident and his subsequent death). Nice that Tim did a tribute, though Crosby was a pallbearer at Russ Columbo's funeral while Tim was a toddler. Still very few people remember who he was despite his growing popularity in the late 20's and early 30's. "Prisoner of Love" is probably his best remembered song, due to numerous covers by many artists including Frank Sinatra.

Well said. And Bing may have enjoyed making the money but he also enjoyed sharing his good fortune over the years with so many friends, acquaintances and charities as well as doing endless performances and benefits to raise money for many causes. He was apparently extremely generous and very caring in helping out family and friends and other performers when they were having a hard time, but was very reluctant to be acknowledged for this help and quite often organised things through a third party because he was uncomfortable in accepting the gratitude and thanks that would have been forthcoming.

Bing kept his baritone voice right to the end.
I love Bing Crosby
An intro to an old show that introduced a new show to reminisce about a previous show that included an old interview. So Joe.
The beatles sold a billion records and wrote most of them; Bing may have sold more especially in USA. Bing deserves to still be popular. His records need remastering and re-releasing especially his final albums recorded in Uk. John Lennon was a Bing fan and wrote Please , please me, inspired by Bing.

Chris Wright that story about how that duet came about is quite fascinating! Bowie and Bing created that duet on the cuff only hours before they filmed it.
See how Joe shut up and let Bing run with the record. Let the guest speak. Great interview
Just found out last week through my family genealogy that Bing’s first wife Dixie Lee is my 3rd cousin. Just never know what you can learn about your family. 😉

That is awesome. Dixie was a beautiful lady inside and out.
Surprisingly, Bing doesn't mention Eddie Lang who he worked with closely from the late 20s to the early 30s
Class.
nearly 3 minutes before Bing speaks.
Growing up in the fifties, when you were kept home and sick, this was the guy you watched, in NYC! He was chicken soup and the bat shit stuff there giving kids now but Joe was the real deal!
Brought to you by Abstergo
Bing was a fantastic story teller, IF given the chance.
Bing left the record behind when he left.
This interview of Bing is from 1976
RIP Joe Franklin.
I hate I missed out on being around during my favorite era of music. I would take bing Crosby over Justin Beiber any day
400 million Records.😱
1976 I believe.
columbo's mother lived 10 years after his death. not a year and a half.
RIP :(
Inspired by the song - Please lend your ears to my pleas....
Yes- and several years ago, she and Joe tried to drum up interest in a Bing Crosby movie biography.....with little or no interest from anyone they tried to "pitch" the idea to.

Barry I. Grauman the problem was that just too many years went by and most of Bing's audience was already deceased and the younger generation barely knew who he was!
Who cares who sold more albums....Elvis, Beatles, Beach Boys, Der Bingle, all had their time and place. All if them were just very human people, doing what they wanted to do. Sing. For fun and profit. Big deal. There are a LOT of people who can sing better than all of them combined, but chose not to. Some of those big stars were not very nice people. Sex addictions, drug addictions. The list goes on and on. Enjoy what you enjoy. Bing will ALWAYS be a Christmas crooner to me.....perhaps the best kind of crooner of them all.
Kathryn Crosby, Bing's wife.
Der Bingle! RIP
That's right Peter beat them with a sack of sweet Valencia oranges don't leave a bruise and let's them know who's boss
he was ok....

How on earth did Joe Franklin get Bing? Bing must have been a fan of the show or something.

On Channel 9 WOR, a local late night show that aired a 1:00 AM and was only seen in the NYC metro area, and you think Crosby who could go on the Tonight Show, Merv Griffin, Barbara Walters or any talk show in the world whenever he wanted "got paid very handsomely" to be on The Joe Franklin Show.... It always says more about people who make such comments that they are projecting more about how they act than the person they're making such comments about.

I just realized Bing Crosby might be a socially-acceptable source of non-renewable carbon-based fuel. No? Ok...back to Andy Dick.

He never did anything like that...where did you get your BS info😂🙄
Read his son's book, Going My Own Way by Gary Crosby. This man was a monster to his sons, one committed suicide. Extreme physical and emotional violence and abuse. No excuse for it.

Now, read his other sons and daughters... They've debunked almost all of Gary's accusations.
Nobody like this guy today, more's the pity
Bing the Batterer, .... traumatized his sons to suicide,....
