I am a military book junkie, I try to read everything, especially about Vietnam, such a fascinating war. The enemy was determined and battles hardened and they were masters of ingenuity and guerilla warfare. SOG and Tiger Force and Phoenix Program were our counters... SOG podcasts are the very best.

There is a 80s sitcom called Tour of duty that is somewhat based off of the studies observation group. It starts out as regular army, and works itself Into the SOG stories.

Not Vietnam but "Pacific" was even more amazing than Band of Brothers imo. It takes place in Japan and for me it was one of the best series I've ever watched. I have a feeling you've already seen it but just thought I'd mention it in case you haven't.

There's a great documentary called 'The Vietnam War' released in 2017 though, I strongly recommend to anyone interested in that time period or the war in general. 10 episodes, about 90min each, very thorough and really well made

I started listening to Jocko Podcast because of John Stryker Meyer's stories. Love seeing him back on.

I'm completely blown away by this man. His attitude,. Bravery, humor, and also how quick witted and sharp his memory is.

I think Lynne Black's mission in the middle part of this episode is undoubtably the most violent engagement Jocko has covered on the podcast. Truly unbelievable that anyone survived to tell the tale.

I just love watching Tilt light up. The deep lines around his eyes certainly show a long life of appreciation, understanding, and happiness. I suppose this is the beauty of life's balance.

Me too brother. And I think it’s great we are finally able to give back to these guys in some way by buying the books...but HOLY SHIT did these guys get after it. The carnage they survived is so statistically unforgiving and yet here they are to tell the story. Unbelievable

Jocko is so hardcore, and these stories make him look like a pup. Love all these guys! God Bless our Vietnam Veterans.

I’ve listened to a lot of War stories but Oscar 8 Lynn Black that is truely the most incredible story I’ve ever heard. Make a fort out of the dead NVA using there weapons and ammunition, charging through the enemies extended line when your about to be over run, going on the offensive attacking mortar tubes, heroism bravery courage, those words don’t seem to do it justice. Medal of honour 10 times over. Macvsog some of the bravest craziest bad ass warriors I’ve ever heard about. Done right what an incredible movie

Though I have enjoyed all of your podcasts, the John Stryker Meyer series has been my absolute favorite.. I have seen each episode multiple times. This happens to be my third or fourth the viewing of episode 247 as a matter of fact. Once again, God bless you Jocko for your bringing these American Heroes the Acclaim that they deserve. The chemistry between you and John is awesome!

"Danger Close" came out in 2019 about the Australian and New Zealand solders. It's based on the real battle of Long Tan. This took place in the rubber plantation that J Meyer talked about.

5:57 - Forward Operating Base 1 (also known as FOB 1, Phu Bai Airfield and Camp Hochmuth) “is a former U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps base south of Huế, in central Vietnam. The Army Security Agency, operating under cover of the 3rd Radio Research Unit (3rd RRU), established a radio facility at Phu Bai in 1963, 12 km southeast of Huế on Highway 1. The operational unit was later redesignated as the 8th Radio Research Field Station (8th RRFS). In 1965, the U.S. Marine Corps established a base across Highway 1 from the 3rd RRU facility. In late 1965, The 3rd Marine Division established its headquarters at Phu Bai and would remain there until late 1967, when it was moved forward to Đông Hà. In late November 1967, the base was named Camp Hochmuth in honor of Bruno Hochmuth, Commanding General, 3rd Marine Division, who was killed in a helicopter explosion north of Huế. In June or July 1968, U.S. Special Forces established Forward Operating Base 1 (FOB 1) at Phu Bai. The base remained in use until early 1969. On 30/31 January 1968, the base was hit by Vietcong mortar and rocket fire as part of the Tet Offensive. The base was used to support U.S. and ARVN forces fighting in the Battle of Huế. The first relief force was dispatched from Phu Bai to the MACV Compound in Huế City. On 15 February 1968, General Creighton Abrams established MACV forward at Phu Bai to assume direct control of US forces in northern I Corps, which were then engaged in the Battle of Huế, the Battle of Khe Sanh, and the Tet Counteroffensive. On 10 March 1968, MACV Forward, having served its purpose, was converted to a Corps headquarters and designated Provisional Corps, Vietnam, under the command of Lieutenant General William B. Rosson. Rosson exercised operational control over the 3rd Marine Division (Reinforced), the 1st Cavalry Division, the 101st Airborne Division (Reinforced) and assigned Corps troops. The new Corps also co-operated closely with the ARVN 1st Division in the area. Provisional Corps, Vietnam, was designated XXIV Corps on 12 August 1968. The 45th Engineer Group moved north to the Phu Bai area in February 1968, where it assumed general construction support missions for the I Corps Tactical Zone. The group then remained in the Da Nang area until departing Vietnam. In 1969, the 85th Evacuation Hospital moved from Qui Nhơn and was established at the northwest end of the airfield, adjacent to Highway 1. That same year, the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division was moved to Phu Bai. Units based at Phu Bai during this period included: 220th Aviation Company, and HMM-161 (October 1969 - September 1970)." Coordinates: 16°24′06″N 107°42′10″E 27:06 - "Forward Operating Base 4 (also known as FOB 4) is a former Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) Command and Control North base. It was near the Marble Mountains southeast of Da Nang, Vietnam. Seabees from NMCB 12 built sea huts on the base in 1968. The base was located immediately north of the Marble Mountains and south of Marble Mountain Air Facility. It was one of the six FOBs the special forces had in Vietnam. On the night of 22-23 August 1968, as part of their Phase III Offensive, a company from the Viet Cong (VC) R20 Battalion and a sapper platoon infiltrated the base, killing 17 Special Forces soldiers (their largest one-day loss of the war) and wounding another 125 allied soldiers. Thirty-two VC were killed." Coordinates: 16.007°N 108.262°E 44:00 - "The Iron Triangle (Vietnamese:Tam Giác Sắt) was a 120 square miles (310 km2) area in the Bình Dương Province of Vietnam, so named due to it being a stronghold of Viet Minh activity during the war. The region was under control of the Viet Minh throughout the French war in Vietnam and continued to be so throughout the phase of American involvement in the Vietnam War, despite concerted efforts on the part of US and South Vietnamese forces to destabilize the region as a power base for their enemy, the communist North Vietnamese-sponsored and-directed South Vietnamese insurgent movement, the Viet Cong (VC). The location of the Iron Triangle was between the Saigon River on the west and the Tinh River on the east and bordering Route 13 about 25 miles (40 km) north of Saigon. The southern apex of the "triangle" was seven miles (11 km) from Phú Cường, the capital of Bình Dương Province. Its proximity to Saigon was both a reason for American and South Vietnamese efforts to eradicate it, as well as why it remained a crucial area for Communist forces to control. The terrain within the Iron Triangle was flat, almost featureless, and covered by dense brush and undergrowth. The clearings, especially in the northern part, were thick with elephant grass, higher than a man's head. The surface was scarred by countless bomb and shell craters so that vehicular movement off the narrow, rough dirt roads was nearly impossible, even tracked vehicles had difficulty. A vast network of tunnels and trenches, most of them caved-in and abandoned, laced this ground that had been the scene of battles since the early days of the second Indochina war."

Never ceases to amaze me how we can have the greatest military in the world capable of defeating any enemy controlled by politicians that make decisions that somehow make it impossible to achieve victory, and this has been going on since Korea (with the exception of the first gulf war)

Actually in the 1st Gulf War they should have just went ahead and taken Saddam out. It would have saved going back(or not gone back, however you want to argue it). I guess one of the Bush's made the wrong decision. But from everything read and seen on it, H.W. Bush told them stop after they had whipped the Iraqi army and were poised to continue towards Bagdad, when given that Saddam wouldn't voluntarily abandon Kuwait, he should have been deposed then and there, but as I said that part is debatable.

@@DavidThomas-qq4hf if we would have done that at the time, it would have accelerated the time we spent in Iraq from 2003 to 1991 and at the time that wasn't the objective- the objective was to remove the Iraqi army out of Kuwait and neutralize any threat to Saudi Arabia, who by the way, paid for the entire thing because their army couldn't stand alone against Iraq if they decided to turn left on the map. Schwartzkofpt called it when he said if we decided to invade Iraq at that time, we would be "stuck there like a dinosaur in a tar pit", which is exactly what happened. He wanted to ensure American troops had a clear path to victory so it could be over once combat operations ended...but we don't always have a choice when the CiC decides to take action for reasons out of our control.

Uk watcher This has to be made into a Netflix documentary, unbelievable bravery, before there story's are lost forever. I listened to 3 in a row, the balls on these guys .

These SOG stories are absolutely incredible. I want to see more podcasts from all the Vietnam Recon/Special Forces guys. LRRPs, Force Recon, MIKE Force, MACVSAR, etc

the stream of consciousness, borderline humorous, often perfectly recalled moment by moment observations of the Alabama recon team’s end of the world 10000 to 1 battle told in a stilted Saigon debriefing is fantastic. The weird relationship between 1-1 and 1-2 unspools through the streets of Saigon on the way to the formal debrief, then in the briefing room. Chapter 2 I believe is one of the greatest war story passages ever told.

I read WTF a few years ago. All I could think while reading the account of Oscar 8 was how on earth did Black not receive the MOH for this. Good God!

Probably something to do with "REMFs" he mentions. A lot of politics involved in medals in the sense that if the command decides they don't like a guy they won't upgrade recommendations or will outright deny them.

First time I’ve ever watched a pod cast this long. WOW I was glued to the story as a veteran myself I felt inadequate as a mere aircraft mechanic for 6 years. I realize I could has done more but I feel secure that what I worked on never failed and the crew came home alive and safe mission accomplished. God bless America never forget.

Momentum of realization. I am 247 podcasts deep. All that time spent commuting, working out, decompressing, doing yard work, cleaning, etc.. I have filled every minute with something that counts. Continuing my study of military science, history, psychology, BJJ banter, and most importantly, self-reflection. I take a lot of these podcasts personally and feel, at times, like the scope is specifically tailored to what I need to hear in my life and when I need to hear it. Thank you for all that you do and thanks to all of the supporters out there keeping this community going. I never read youtube comments and don't expect others to read mine, but just wanted to put the gratitude out there on the interwebz. -DRD

I don't think Hollywood has enough ordinance to make a movie about any of these guys. So glad the survivors got to finally enjoy life. 🇺🇸👍

So SOG probably killed and led to killing of thousands of NVA troops with very few casualties-- that ratio is incredible-- talk about force multipliers. I appreciate how they picked up the enemies weapons after exhausting their ammunition, and continued the slaughter...

This is the war we should’ve fought. Having a large, slow conventional force in that country with that terrain was ludicrous and probably cost us the war. SOG teams were who the NVA feared most. The reason why they were willing to sacrifice so many of their own men just to take out a team the size of a squad. 👍🏼🇺🇸

Great! I just finished watching all of the episodes with John Stryker Meyer a few months ago. Now I see this one, what a great day!
