Letterman was and still is a fucking genius. He was around Andy Kaufmann and the like and sensed something was fake, because Joaquin's performance on the interview was not as perfect and brilliant as people give it credit, and he played along. He ad libbed his jokes to Joaquin. He made the interview weird and made Joaquin look weird. Joaquin really didn't do much! Letterman made that iconic. Then Joaquin comes back and he busts his balls for the entire interview because he knew he was gonna ket them use the footage without cost. I watched this interview when it was on the air and knew that it was staged or something because Dave was acting like something was staged. I watched Letterman for almost 30 years. I knew Dave was fucking around. Joaquin is good but he ain't Daniel Day Lewis for fucks sake. He played the Joker and the batty boy dick riders think he's fucking god.

He is without doubt , has become the most interesting , complex actor in the last 15 yrs. weather it’s because of his personality , his approach to characters , or just his acting ability but he’s so the most exciting to watch since Day Lewis .....

Joaquin was awesome in the Joker! He just got a home run!

This just proves how goldy of an actor he is.

My question is how are people just now discovering Joaquin Phoenix? He’s been in other iconic films besides Joker. A couple of my favorites are Gladiator and Walk the Line.

You MUST see _The Master_ If you liked Joker, I can almost guarantee you'll love this movie ! Joaquin plays a somewhat Arthur Fleck-ish type guy who gets wooed into a Scientology-like cult headed by Philip Seymour Hoffman's character. Two of the best actors of this generation, directed by another great - Paul Thomas Anderson !!

Notice how he reacts to the praise of Letterman and the audience clapping? Unimpressed by his own status. He doesn't let things like praise get under his skin because he knows what's important and he knows how to nourish his soul. With the right things. He sees through things. This is what I call a man. A complete man. He's my favorite actor in Hollywood.

What minute this happens?

He is one of the greatest actors of our time. He can do anything. John Cash was perfect, Comodor from Gladiator was amazing, his part on The Master was Oscar nominated along with many many other parts and now Joker which I think he will get an Oscar for.

Joaquin is such a beautiful man.

Loved this guy since the first moment I saw him in 8mm. One of the very best actors of our generation - he's fascinating to watch.

Chaplin Co no he is my age and was in movies like space camp and russkies now that's when he was young haha but back then he went by leaf as his first name haha was like 12 or 13 people don't know that he has been acting for along time ever since the mid 80s

8mm is a phenomenal movie. And Gladiator, Quills, Her, The Master, etc, etc. Joaquin completely disappears into his characters.

i'm really glad he's back and he is being hired for great roles again.

I like to think this weirder roles he got after were exactly because of this stunt. The right people appreciated it.

'I'm Still Here' is a brilliant work of art. Very talented dude.

Joaquin is so sweet and genuine.

I watched Dave from his earliest days at NBC and all through his time at CBS, and regardless of how many years he was on tv it turns out it still wasn’t enough for me. I miss him and his show.

I think if Joaquin was upfront originally and talked to Dave to do the interview in character then Dave would have played along. People go on these shows to promote things, obviously. But when you put the host in that kind of spot by acting like that and not saying anything about it beforehand is rude. Then for Joaquin to basically say he thought Dave would have been smart enough to figure out what he was doing...That's when Dave really didn't let it go. First Joaquin makes a fool of his appearance then a year and a half later insults the host...yeah, I think I'd be kinda fuck you-ish if I were Dave.

@@SpideyScott72 I dont think that what the person was talking about at all but to respond to that point of view, If Joaquin would have just told Dave what was going to happen then he wouldn't get a genuine reaction from David and the interview would have gone differently and people would probably be able to make out that it was just a character so it would kinds ruin everything really and it was great promotion cause everyone wanted to see wtf was going on and plus millions of people watched that interview over and over again so it's a win win

@@Jorozco3708 I'm pretty sure Dave had been in the biz long enough to know how to play along. If you invite me to a party and I act like a dick, odds are as the party host you'll be slightly embarrassed and probably pissed. If I told you ahead of time I'm going to be a dick to see what people's reaction will be, you can either choose to say sure let's see where it goes, or no that's not what I want at my party. It shows you respect as the host rather than putting you in an awkward position. That said, I do think on the first point it's what the poster meant so we clearly have differing views which is perfectly fine.

Saw that other interview and thought he was out of his mind. Had no idea that was a bit. This guy is incredible!

Joaquin Phoenix is the sexiest man on earth; clean cut and shaven or scrappy hair and beard. It just doesn't matter. He is psychotically hot!!

First movie I saw of him was in gladiator and he really caught my eye. Never forgot.

Dave did do the best joke on that interview at the end "Well Jaoquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here today!" Cracked me up so hard.

Joaquin is a beautiful and rare creature.

I can’t get enough of Joaquin now, only seen the trailer and he looks like he’s amazing in it ❤️

Always knew he was good, but didn't realise how bloody good he really is. Understanding society to that level, knowing that he's going into a shark pond and feeling comfortable enough to do it. Genius.

He looked so good nine years ago. He is incredible talented and I’ve always loved his voice!

@@kd2289 I would love to see Dave have him on the show on Netflix. I have watched several episodes of it and enjoy the fact that there's much more time to conduct the interview, it's more relaxed then the usual talk show format, it's uncensored and he asks more personal questions about those he's interviewing. It honestly feels like you really get to know the person being interviewed and you learn more about their backgrounds and family life. And you also learn more about Dave himself as he chats about things he may have in common with the guest. I'd really love to see Joaquin interviewed! I hope Dave has him on. I've watched almost all of the episodes from the 2 seasons and I am looking forward to seeing a new one.

I love Phoenix. He is so precious.
