J.N. Darby and the Roots of Dispensationalism describes the work of one of the most important and under-studied theologians in the history of Christianity. In the late 1820s, John Nelson Darby abandoned his career as a priest in the Church of Ireland to become one of the principal leaders of a small but rapidly growing religious movement that became known as the “Plymouth Brethren.” Darby and other brethren modified the Calvinism that was common among their evangelical contemporaries, developing distinctive positions on key doctrines relating to salvation, the church, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the end times.

Darby's biggest contribution, in my estimation, is his linguistic / translational abilities and his display of a general classical education. We can honor his approach far more than the details of his doctrine. In my view, attacks on Darby typically show the ignorance of the attacker more than anything else. He had a mind that was a force to be reckoned with. He was not always right, but always well-argued. --thanks for an interesting review.

again, agree 100%. It was his approach to the Bible more than his conclusions that I loved to learn about. Although it was very interesting to read about his conclusions.

Jn Darby started a cult called the Exclusive Brethren, and it doesn't take much research to know that many families were torn apart because of them.

Darby also Translated the entire Bible into English. This Translation which is pretty Literal is still in print today and it was the first Bible I read cover to cover. I particularly like that Darby's Translation uses Jehovah instead of LORD in the Old Testament. 🤠

Thanks for this review Shawn. I bought the book a couple months back but canceled the order before it shipped because I thought it might’ve been a secular treatment of Darby‘s life and maybe of lesser value. It sounds like those fears were unfounded.

Totally not. Gribben really just marches through the development of Darby's teaching in those four categories. Although you may want to wait for my second video with Fazio before you make a final decision about if you should read the book because I haven't read Darby before so Fazio will be a better judge. But I would say it is definitely not a hit piece against Darby. He was very respectful.

So he WASN'T the guy who led the meeting where the (pre-trib) "rapture" theory came about? Have I been misinformed by other sources/books?

Correct. People already believed and wrote about the teaching of a pre-trib rapture before Darby.

Thanks! I am reading this now. Looking forward to your discussion with Dr. Fazio. I particularly liked you discussion of soteriology. I think separating JND from Calvinism is a big mistake. Dispensationalism is rooted in Calvinism and, IMHO, is the fruit of the reformed biblicism in categories of theology the reformers left unaddressed. Pre-reformation dispensational thought was always born of a commitment to biblicism.

Thanks for the review! I’ve been a dispensationalist for many years, but like you didn’t know much about him. All I knew was that my reformed friends I think he ruined Christianity.

Watch the KZread video "Genesis of Dispensational Theology", if you want to see the original source of the doctrine in black and white. It came from Edward Irving's English translation of a book written by a Roman Catholic Jesuit priest named Manuel Lacunza.

AMEN on the primacy of the local church rather than the catholic/universal idea. I think both covenant and dispensational theology have made far too much emphasis on the so-called "universal" church.

You said, "Dispensationalism was birthed out of reformed Calvinism." While true in the sense of the dispensational framework we know and use today, it should be noted that dispensational principles, including the division of the ages, pre-trib rapture, and the general hermeneutic is much older than Darby. I suspect you would agree, just wanted to make the comment.

It wasn't started by Darby. You should read more church history. The components of Dispensationalism were all present throughout church history.
