Welcome Dr James Fazio to Rev Reads! Dr. Fazio has a PhD in history from Queen’s University Belfast and he is the Dean of Bible and Theology at Southern California Semrinary. Shawn and James have an engaging discussion on Crawford Gribben's JN Darby and the Roots of Dispensationalism. Fazio helps us to see why if you only know one or two facts about Darby, you most certainly have not been given correct information on this church scholar.

Love this discussion. I saw so many flaws with the Scofield and Ryrie ageism and ready to give up dispensationalism as a system and just keep the hermeneutics. But I wanted to look into Darby and a friend pointed me to Roy Huebner Elements of Dispensational Truth vol. 1. (And yes, there is vol 2-5 also which I have). I realized the issues I had with classic dispensation and how I was seeing Scripture fit with Darby better. So I do call myself more in the Darby camp.

Darby contrived a dichotomy between the Old Testament saints and the Church. This caused many within his congregation to dismiss much of the New Testament as not being applicable to the Church. The Fry Manuscript is the true witness for the start of Premillennial Dispensationalism and the pretribulational rapture, which actually started out as a partial rapture under the "Closet Catholic," Edward Irving. Sadly, the Fry Manuscript has been removed from being downloaded. I believe it's because it exposes the truth.

Benjamin Wills Newton was publicly attacked by Darby on several occasions due to their doctrinal differences about the end times and the Church.

Newton stated, "I've often wondered if he was employed by the Jesuits."

Hi there Rev, thank you. 2 things: 1. Have you read “Lamb of the Free”? 2. Is there any connection with Darby and British Israelism?

    1. No, I have not. 2. From what I have read, it predates Darby and Darby would not have been supportive of it based on his views. I would guess that his circles overlapped with British Israelism but Darby himself opposed it.

@@RevReads thanks this is helpful. I think scofield may have held to it though. The lamb of the free directly attacks penal substitutionary atonement, I think it’s going to be very controversial Thanks as alwyss

@@IsaiahPatrick0115 Based on what Fazio has told me, probably the only two are Synopsis of the Books of the Bible and the Darby Bible.

To get a taste, Read "The Man of Sorrows: Notes on the Gospel of Luke". Very readable and edifying. In general, distinguish between what he wrote to be read by others (as well as his lectures that have been recorded) and just his notes and comments that were left behind and assembled.
