It is still astounding, though, that apparently even with the talent of Jim Carrey it is necessary to start out with something the audience already knows. His impersonation skills are from another planet but still it's tapping into the fame of others, imitating the unique features of other persons. It's like an unknown band that has to play cover songs until finally someone notices that they can play well until they can play their own songs. And I think that says more about us, the audience, than about the artists or the industry.

Carson knew by sharing the spotlight others made him look better. He realized there was great talent out there so why not give them their big break? Why do all the hard work when your platform let's others carry your load. He knew the public looked forward to his showcasing new talent. He didn't fear it. He built a rolodex of talent which any producer would envy. Not all succeeded--some are long forgotten. Johnny was the best.

Nothing against Carson's greatness, but Jim Carrey was basically forced on The Tonight Show by the network because the show Carson mentioned while introducing him was on the same network. Also, it's pretty well known that when Carson didn't invite the guests to come talk with him, it meant he didn't really like the act.

And what made him really famous was his "impression" of Matt Frewer and his Max Headroom character... It is almost like Jim's entire career was one big Max Headroom impression... but, he did kinda do it better than Frewer, to be fair. But, there is a reason The Mask, a total rip off Max Headroom was Jim's first big break. Max Headroom STILL polls high with audience surveys. But Frewer made it too much of, and too accurate, a social commentary for Hollywood to embrace him. But what he created was such a success Hollywood had to figure out how to take it from him and make it their own. Max headroom was the most successful show canceled at the time. Kinda like the way FOX tried to get rid of Futurama.

Nearly a 10 minute set. Johnny must have really like his act to give a guy this young that long of a set.

My mom was a superfan of Little House on the Prairie when I was a kid, and I have to say that Carrey's "Michael Landon smiling" impression is SPOT ON.

What I find most amazing especially about the young Jim Carrey is that he comes on stage with this average nice face and boyish haircut and you expect some cute little school theater performance, and then - BAMMM! - he detonates right into your face with all this explosion of pure silliness.

I was watching that night laughing my ass off and never forgot that Michael Landon impression. Never foresaw his movie career.

Dedication and motivation will get you anywhere on earth and beyond. That's why several years ago he started his spiritual endeavor with the universe and also started lecturing about his transformation.

When you had Johnny Carson's blessing, and you appeared on his show, you knew you had finally arrived! Carey deserved it, and he has made alot of people laugh!

JC has the best physical humor ever - down to a science. He was way ahead of his time and a lot of people back during this time didn't "get it" because this level of physical humor wasn't considered legit humor yet. Didn't take long for him to prove them all wrong.

He even made Ryan Gosling at the end! The expressions on his face are the best.

i loved him the very first time i saw him at In Living Colors. what makes his distorted face acts very funny is that he could get away with it because he is such a handsome guy.🥰
