JFK Jr: His Final 24 Hours | Final 24 Full Episode

John Kennedy Jr. was American royalty and a cultural icon. His promise of living out his political legacy bequeathed to him on the day of his father’s assassination, was cut short over the Atlantic Ocean one July night. Kennedy’s death and that of his wife and sister-in-law, were the result of a series of bad decisions Kennedy had made during his last day. A day plagued by stress when his life depended on his ability to think clearly. Final 24 examines the string of errors that led to his tragic demise.

As someone with ADHD, I’ve learned, in order to avoid failure, to check and double-check every detail about the planning and actual execution of every endeavor. In hindsight, it’s pretty obvious JFK Jr. also had ADHD. His relentless curiosity, his impulsivity and creativity - it’s all very familiar for anyone with ADHD. A big symptom of ADHD is chronic lateness (definitely speaking from experience). And rushing to be on time is when we tend to make mistakes, unless we’re hyper-vigilant. This is when John Jr., already running very late when they reached the airport, made his fatal mistakes: he declined a co-pilot; didn’t file a flight plan, didn’t alert his family on Martha’s Vineyard about how late they were running, and finally, chose to fly a (minimally) faster route over the water, which was infinitely more dangerous due to the weather/fog. If only he’d slowed his roll, and taken a moment to breathe, he might have made different choices. Slowing our thoughts waaaay down is the only way for those of us with ADHD to fully evaluate the risks and rewards of our choices (our impulsivity can be a blessing and/or a curse). My dad was well acquainted with John Jr due to NY business ventures. He told me he was one of the most humble, down-to-earth people he’d ever met, in business or otherwise. He was impressed by John Jr’s grace and humility in the face of so much public scrutiny. Such a tragic ending for the Kennedys, as well as Lauren and Carolyn’s parents and John’s sister, Caroline. Truly heartbreaking.

I was thinking that John had adhd because my grandson has it. But when he married, it seemed like too striking a difference between the two. He needed an outgoing person like himself. Her brooding over reporters in public gave me a negative feeling about their marriage. But my heart broke when all three died in the crash. Now, we have only memories of John and wonder what all he could have accomplished. I was in 11th grade when President Kennedy died. So much tragedy in all the Kennedy’s lives. Take care.

My father quietly commented that John Jr. should never have made this trip without instrument flying status. And they were headed for his cousin’s wedding.. Rory ..who was born six months after the death of her father Robert Kennedy.

I read that Carolyn didn't like a manicure she got that day ~ and insisted that it be done over right then and there. This didn't help and I really think they should have waited until Saturday morning to fly out. Plus JFK Jr. should have hired a co-pilot to help him out. JFK Jr. loved airplanes. In the Look Magazine layout way back in the early 60s, John would “narrate” a portion of the article from his two-year-old perspective. There was a shot of young John poised outside the closed door of his father’s office drawing an airplane. The caption said, “The closed door means Daddy’s busy so you just draw another plane.” I was a little girl when that article came out. He truly loved aviation from a very young age.

There are so many things wrong with this video. First of all, pilots who have reviewed the flight after the fact have said that he was a good one and well-trained and qualified. Second, he did not take the direct ocean route, he followed the lights of the Connecticut coastline. Pilots have said that what happened to John, spatial disorientation, could happen to any pilot. He had flown the same route at least 35 times, 17 times without a co-pilot and 5 of those flights at night. RIP.

WHEN YOU READ THE WORD "BETTER", IT MAY APPEAR TO YOU AS "BEETER". I think the brain signals between what you read and what you think you saw are not in sync. There's something that gets scrambled in the path of transmission between the eyes and the brain. JFK Jr. took the bar exam for an attorney's license 3 TIMES before he passed it. Dyslexia had to be why this happened. It was hazy at twilight when they took off, and not enough daylight to fly w/o having to resort to reading instruments on his plane's console panel. It's O.K. to be irritated by the attention but she had to know the attention came with the territory. I'm willing to bet good money if they were both still alive they would be divorced by now, especially if she was the witch they claimed she was, along with the constant complaining about the paparazzi. I mean YOU MARRIED A KENNEDY!!! She married one of America's FAVORITE president's son! Maybe that's something she should've thought about before marrying him because I'm sure she knew cameras followed him everywhere. He was such a humble man. He visited S.F. one year in the 90s, and visited a gym in the financial district for which I happened to be a member. The nutritionist at the gym told me the story about him forgetting his razor, so he goes to the front desk to ask if he could buy one. The front desk insisted that he just take it, but he insisted on paying for the razor. RIP Jon Jon. I too wanted to be an actor, but my mother insisted I get a more reliable career. This all came from friends he worked with at George. One admitted they had talked about whether another fight had ensued and he just ploughed into the ocean? I wish they had just separated and got on with their lives. So sad.

@@suzyfarnham3165 First off: Her name is Carolyn and NOT Caroline. Caroline is John's sister. Get your facts straight when spewing GOSSIP!! Honestly, if her friends - "druggies" really exist, then why have NONE of them written about her? Wouldn't you think her "druggie" friends would have gotten off on writing a book about her? Profit off their "druggie" adventures? ONLY John's shitty two faced friends and his former girl friends, his business partner, his ASS-istant have penned books trying to insert their stories into the legacy of John's. Michael Bergin wrote a book but he was already known and came off as the jilted ex. NONE of HER real friends have said a peep. There are thousands of photos of Carolyn and NONE show her looking anything less than impeccable.

This guy had it all. BUT…Couldn’t read instruments, knew about the fog situation better than anyone and shouldn’t have flown at night. To this day I don’t know what he was thinking. So much to live for…

@@chop3625 It is mindboggling. Some people on here think maybe he was suicidal. Maybe on some level he was. Maybe he was too distracted by the day's events to give it proper thought. Maybe the pain medication for his ankle affected his judgment. Lots of things added up to this. Clearly a series of very, very poor decisions.

His father died 2 months before I was born . 36 years later John Jr. was gone. I don’t know both of them but I was very sad. RIP

Some bad decisions made by john . Too bad he didn’t have instrument training. It would of saved his life. My heart goes out to the families. Such a tragic end .

We never disowned Jackie . We were just surprised that she married Aristotle Onassis. I would see her and her children riding on their bicycles in Central Park. It took awhile to get over; but she was always supporting projects to help New York. Life was difficult for her with first the loss of her baby Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, the assassination of her husband President Kennedy and then the assassination of her brother in law Robert Kennedy. She made it intact and still had the love of her children Caroline and John.

If I remember correctly, Jacqueline married Onassis because she felt her children weren't safe here in USA. Mr. Onassis had lots of money and a big yacht and she felt he would be able to keep her children safe. Must be awful to be fearful like that. A lot of killing went on around John Kennedy that year.
