    good to give it a go. Given up on big fish jetty fishing for that very reason, skate and rays is what,s usually got where i live. Rather spend time on the smaller fish and fish in a way that rays or skate won't get hooked.

    Nev. Cowes is a gr8 pier.but need to fish according to tides. On outgoing fish at the LH end, where you were today. On incoming fish RH end and aim at throwing bait towards Tortoise head. Any where else is No go. Having said that been impressed with Squid you have caught. Nev have you tried Newhaven Pier it gives excellent trevally, mullet gars and pinkies.

    Cheers for the idea, not sure if it would work around here with all the weed and big currents but it may be worth a look around the tide changes. What i tend to do is use a long leader on the sinker to elevate the bait (obviously doesnt work well though hahahah)

  • @Rubibi-saltwaterjim

    @Rubibi-saltwaterjim

    Nev, you can use a really light float to elevate your bait off a running ball sinker. Or using paternoster rig works well too.

    You could also have just put the Mackerel back in as a live bait rather than a whole fillet. Rays are scavengers so less likely to take a bait swimming around. And kingi's love em!
