All great comedians are anthropologists. One of the best interviews this year
Years ago, a friend's sister decided she wasn't going to be a great comedian but could be the host. She organized female comedian events around the area and did a great job. I got to talk with a number of the comedians and really got to know how hard they worked to get even a five minute set. Impressive.

In my quest to make life bearable by finding cheap and easy to relate to laughs (maybe I'm just to British), I have been watching quite a few female stand up comedians. Pleasantly surprised that in the US of A it seems to me that it's the ladies who are pushing the limits hard-core more than the men. Keep it up! For a few of my personal favourite tips on "The Rules of Comedy", I would recommend those identified by Jimmy (I fucked your mum) Carr.
Jesse David Fox rules. Love Good Ones. He asks the best questions and always has a great conversation with the guest. So many shows where you can tell the comedian comes on not knowing what the podcast is about and is shocked when they have a great time on it.
I have such respect for Jesse David Fox. His thoughtfulness and kindness are apparent in his writing and on Good One. I just wish this convo could've been longer!
Lo mucho que admiro a Jesse David Fox, madre mía. I sent a real lengthy DM a couple of months ago and he was nice enough to engage. Still hoping to interview him next year. Besos desde Guatemala, querido.
Humility has power. More of this. Include empathy. Bring kindness back.
Wow. Sometimes you see someone for the first time and you're like, how have I only just heard of you today?!?!? This guy is totally my jam I am so excited to read his book and binge his podcast and follow whatever he does next

What a perfect topic to dork out about… totally getting this book!
Fantastic entrance. Good pace, solid greet, and the little hop onto stage really capped it off.

Are you an entrance critic? The talking part was pretty good, too. :)
One of my fav podcasts - Jesse is an excellent interviewer who takes his research seriously.
Seth taking notes like a pre med student. I'm going to see his stand up. Hopefully there's no tiktok dorks and just jackals
I know that stand ups put a lot of work into their acts, I have even been lucky enough to be there during some workshopping. But I have also seen Paula Poundstone completely freestyle 20 minutes of material during a taping of Wait Wait when they had technical difficulties. It was not her developed material as it was all topical from the last couple of days, even last couple of hours. It was amazing!

@@tanner1548 it wasn’t taped as part of the show. You would have to find someone who recorded it on their phone. We were too busy enjoying it. I think it was the same year we got to meet Carl Kasell after he retired. So, probably July 25, 2015.

That goes to show how much work she has put in to get to the point where she could pull that off. Using your brain in that manner helps strengthen those connections which makes successful riffing easier. Having ADHD also helps.

New podcast follower!
I honestly thought this was a rerun with James Austin Johnson😂 He seemed super nervous. Still went out and did his thing. Kudos man! I’m just stoked to see the best moderator handle these debates tonight. Last one was real good. Let’s see what you got tonight, hopefully 🤞 I laughed so hard at the last one. Get ready to watch Vivek Ramaswamy eat adderall out a Peez dispenser and attempt to talk. “We are throwing out the electoral college. Fight island 2024!” Something like that.

We love jesse david fox
Mike Birbiglia's podcast very much talks about the creative project
Dear Seth Meyers, It was one of the great episode.

ooh, arming your jackals with a book about comedy could backfire.
Wow, Seth being the bigger person, platforming his former critic... she thought, then they talk about how the guy rated one of his sketches highest. Good bye, Illusions. It was nice while it lasted. 😂
My ideal comedy show is friends laughing and people working together to be silly. Sensitivity is required for positive human connection

The problem here (and I'm not trying to get into a heated argument) is that you absolutely can restrict YOUR comedy diet to sensitive, kindly comedy, but for those of us who find that kind of comedy insipid, we are increasingly unable to find real comedy because it is being forced out of existence by de facto policing of morality. I leave you alone to enjoy Sunday night improv from "The Silly Billies", you leave me alone to listen to no-holds-barred, barn burning humor from true comedians. In other words, the only problem is that one side is trying to force the other to conform to their beliefs. That is fascism.

@@TroubleToby3040 You’ve got to be kidding. Bill Burr, Bert Kreischer, Nikki Glaser, Louis CK (still working), Jim Jeffries, Ricky Gervais, Whitney Cummings, Dave Chappelle, so many more available to you. Unless you think none of them are “true comedians.”

@@mollymaam To some extent, I give you "fair play". Point taken. I just know that I've never attempted to boycott the return of Full House even though I genuinely think that "comedy" that insipid and dumb IS bad for America. It encourages placid stupidity in viewers. But I say "You do you." Where's that courtesy for those who enjoy controversial comedy? And why shouldn't Louis CK "still" be working? He freely admitted to and apologized for undeniably inappropriate sexual harassment in 2018. Five years ago. You don't want him to ever get a career back because of sexual harassment?
Weird I’ve spoken to him online as someone who’s tried submitting to vulture

As a child and seeing Johnny Carson I honestly thought it was free form chatting. No practice or agreed upon script except mentioning a movie or book. I was disappointed to learn - I was an adult - to learn it wasn't just off the cuff funny interviews. It still kind of bothers me. I thought it showcased how clever they were at the moment. Sure, there's some of that but not what I thought.

Sensitive... I bet he cries while combing his hair.
Quite the smorgasbord of unnatural and twitchy movements mercilessly in tune with verbal articulation from this guest.
People are sensitively laughing at him, not with him.
"crowd work clips"??????? wtf are "crowd work clips"???
@phelan_pt

In case you are asking earnestly: they're video clips posted to social media that show the comedian interacting with audience members in an improvised manner. Things like asking an audience member where they're from and what they do, and trying to riff something humourous out of that interaction. It can also mean dealing with an unexpected heckler in a funny way, to get on with the show. This as opposed to going through pre-written, worked on jokes. As they say in this video, there's been a lot more crowd work video clips going viral on social media, so comedians are using them to get people to come to live shows, instead of promoting in other ways, like posting clips of the pre-written show.

This guy's not a comedian.
Interesting. I don’t really agree with their conclusion on what makes a comedian fearless. It seems that relying on mental health and even physical health things is just a crutch to gain sympathy. Ultimately, I don’t care about someone being fearless or sensitive. I only care about the joke. It can be offensive, make fun of certain groups, a harmless food joke, or sure joke about your own mental health: all that matters is if it’s funny.
Sensitivity ruined comedy. People are offended on behalf of people they don't even know. Pauly Shore is better than the crap coming out today.

Good comedy is so hard to find, you get what you pay for. Good help is so hard to find, You get what you pay for.
This is easy to say when we are coming off the golden age of comedy and the largest expose society has ever had to it in world history. We are now entering a comedy slump over the last 7 years with lost late-night shows like Conan, Samantha Bee, Amber Ruffin, James Corden, Less than blossoming animation for adults as Adult swim became a rerun channel in 2007 officially. Comedy has been in a decline for a decade, and we are force fed drama trash through these dumb apps that now own television...
