*Self-Hating Joke Lover with Vulture’s Jesse David Fox | The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi

Комедия

Writer Jesse David Fox joins us to share the downsides of being a comedy critic, why he hasn't been to the Comedy Cellar in years, if jokes are even necessary to make great comedy, the difference between originality and quality, and Gianmarco swears he's not just being combative because he didn't make the Vulture list this year.

More about Gianmarco:
Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

I've not listened to every episode of the pod but so far this is my favorite. It was a bit adversarial but ultimately you guys mostly agreed on the outcomes. You approached each subject with such a uniquely different perspective it caused an interesting tension. There was catharthis when you collectively decided to define "joke." The way I could feel both of you redirecting the energy of frustration into communication was a masterclass in using words to solve conflict. Ad hoc offensives were kept to a minimum (white male half Jewish half italian comedians.... I died) and the the battle of ideas was the main focus. It actually felt like you both were in your own camp and trying to understand the terrain between camps so you could each build a path from them to you....even if only to realise they are in your own back yard. Jianmarco thank you for the content. Russell don't miss so many episodes i fuckin love you. Jesse Fox, Jianmarco can be intense but I need you to come back okayyyy. Thank you for being patient with him and intelligently communicating your POV. Something that I thought was missing from this podcast was.... aside from jokes and narrative structure, what other tools do comedians use to shape their craft? I noticed delivery wasn't touched on, nor props or gimmicks or alternative implementations such as Matt Parker's educational math stand up, or comedians who are hired for corporate gigs. It left me with questions like "what is hacky to a comedian" and "when is and isn't it okay to reach for low hanging fruit" and "what would a critic deem to be BAD alt comedy." Basically what I'm trying to say is you guys seem to hate each other with the best chemistry and I hope I see it again Love the Queen

That was such excellent analysis at the 40 minute mark, Gianmarco. That's effectively structural barriers for people to make it in comedy -- whatever the myriad politically centrist group it may be discriminating against. Big fan. Great pod!

My dad has parkinsons - when I hear a joke about it, usually like about shaking or trembling, whatever, usually it just makes me feel lonely like I’m sad and jealous that others can find humor in that when I associate it only with grief. I think that’s why it triggers some people, like suddenly they’re reminded that this thing makes them sad and hurt and is so personal when everyone is laughing around them. It’s not even that they’re laughing AT Parkinson’s, or that I think it’s cruel, it’s just an odd personally close situation. I’m not sure at all what the right or wrong thing is as far as comedy and those kind of jokes, but it is a jarring experience.

48:23 is pretty much spot on from Gianmarco. Jokes are literally the building block on which the foundation of comedy rests and this guy seems to have a fundamentally incorrect idea about what it means to be a comedian lol. Comedians like Mark Normand can go a little bit overkill on the joke telling aspect but I'd rather have that when I'm watching a stand-up instead of an unfunny person trying to justify their place in a comedic setting.

What I find really interesting about artists (of any kind), specifically though, of comedians and actors. Does it seem like EVERYONE is critical of what you're doing and saying? When is it, or how do you know when it's opinion versus honest critique?

I do think only going up for 15 min type spots might make it hard to play around with structure/timing or just work on longer chunks of material but that just part of comedy ig. I just want all types of comedy to thrive. But there are ‘club comics’ who are pushing the medium forward as well ie Joe List and Gavin Matts

Interesting convo, gotta watch the whole thing but I get where both guys are coming from. I wonder how uk comics like James acaster would feel about the comedy ecosystem in the states couse of how different the circuit is. I think The Edinburgh fringe festival is more geared twords one-man show type acts so I wonder how they get enough stage time to work on new material without working in clubs

If a magician told a rich story through magic tricks on a really cool stage with fancy effects and production but all they were doing was basic tricks you've seen before you won't care about the tricks (jokes) you'll care about the story and the performance (the artist vibes being communicated through jokes). David Blaine walked up to people on the street and blew people's minds with his tricks and thw execution so you remember his tricks because he's a magician not a performer that does card tricks. Photo realistic paintings and all other paintings are still using paint to convey something they're succeeding at the thing they're saying they are. Movies of all different kinds still succeed at being moving pictures. If your goal isn't make people laugh going into making a joke it's definitionally not comedy, its a Ted talk with jokes so you care about the story and the politics not the jokes. That's why George Carlin was so funny he started with making people laugh and snuck in his politics and self into the jokes so you care about the comedy and the message. You can disagree with the message of a really good joke and still laugh but when the message is the focus that's all there is to talk about. Both are art but one is comedy and the other is a funny presentation

Ok, I'm getting triggered, apparently. Doesn't this come down to just all the "politically correct" bullshit? People get offended over certain things and phrases. I understand about being sensitive to certain things, but it's comedy, it's jokes and making fun of things. Is the intent of the jokes meant to hurt people or people groups? If you're so upset by it, then don't go and make the comics life so fucking difficult for doing what they're doing.
