Jess Phillips OWNS and DESTROYS Owen Jones

So I had a lovely time recording interviews at Labour party conference - so much so that I lost my voice (a nation cheers!). One of my interviews was with Jess Phillips, and it caused a stir: after I asked her whether Labour was still a broad church, we had a philosophical discussion about what constitutes the 'left' and 'right' flanks of the Labour party. Her army of very vocal fans swiftly declared that I'd been torn a new one, owned and destroyed, so here I am, a jibbering wreck.

She also intimates this is because that wing is antisemitic and unelectable. I wonder if she has watched the Labour Files for any context on her opinion (if those are her honestly held beliefs). The reason I wonder if they are honestly held is the way she dances around the question rather than just openly saying "I think the Labour Left are antisemitic and unelectable".

Because the cost of putting so much support on Jeremy Corbyn when he was a toxic apple for the British public, was an 80 seat majority for Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. You can make up any policy you like, but you have to bring the British public with you and to do that, you have to moderate the extremes because democracy is about compromise. The alternative is to collapse the country like Liz Truss is doing and get elected on one mandate and then do another - and that would be autocracy.

Also, people don’t tend to have great confidence in a party that is constantly trying to usurp its leader - the leaders of the NEC and other establishment figures is why they didn’t win. The electorate didn’t vote for Gordon brown or Ed Miliband either and they could hardly be considered progressive or leftist, the idea that Corbyn is the reason Labour have struggled to get elected is farcical.

Jess Philips is why I no longer support the Labour party. They are now full of side tracking BS as much as the Conservatives. It's not that she's not 'left wing' or to the 'right'. It's because she's knows exactly what Owen is getting at but won't say it out in the open, and this is reflected in policy. With people like her, and I find her annoyingly attention seeking too, things will not change structurally. Any gains for the working class will be superficial.

Honestly, Labour is not and never has been a broad church. The left want the party to go further left, the centerists want the party to go further to the centre - you cannot reconcile those two points of view because there is no point of compromise. However the bottom line is that labour are more electable now than 2019 whether you like it or not. Wil I be voting Labour? Nope, but my priorities have been remain, green economy, well funded and fair public services, greater equality, and most important electoral reform and it is only through electoral reform can we all get what we want and neither Corbyn nor starmer offered that. Best thing that can happen for the left is introduction of PR and then the party can split and still matter.

I think this exchange demonstrates the need for proportional representation. In almost every other job, people with different views have to work together. UK politics desperately needs this. But in the flawed system we have, in order to win, you have to try and appeal to the people most likely to vote and help you win at first past the post. And the centre ground is where you win in this system. Do I like it? No, not always. But until we have a different system, that is where the battle is. Most people (broadly) fall in the centre ground for politics. To introduce PR under our current system, I don't think you can win on that electoral platform. If it were me, I would campaign on what I know would get me the votes I needed to win under FPTP and then introduce PR once in so that next time, FPTP is gone. People can then scream at me all they like, but the law would be changed and it would very difficult for one-party rule to continue. It could even make politicians think beyond the next election cycle and plan ahead on things like, environment, energy, healthcare, transport etc.
