Jerry Lewis Roundtable discussion with Rick Greene and Gary Cohen

Kat and author Rick Greene discuss with Gary Cohen, the history behind his love of Jerry Lewis/Martin and Lewis, and his experiences photographing Jerry for several events. We also discuss Rick Greene's book Marketing Mayhem: Selling Martin and Lewis to Post-War America which is now in color, and Rick's new book on Abbott and Costello, Advertising Anarchy! Selling Bud Abbott & Lou Costello To War-Torn America. The trio discusses a little bit of everything, because why not? Enjoy! Note: Kat's video was glitching every time she spoke, so had to add in a picture over her video at times.

Well that was FUN! Good job Kat editing. Both Rick and I always have plenty to talk about. We hope the M&L fans enjoyed our discussion and will purchase Ricks book Marketing Mayhem.: Selling Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis to Post-War America. We'd love to return sometime with your other guests for further discussion on the M&L careers. Yours in laughter, Gary

Abbott and Costello like Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy had a different physicality than M&L. Their characters were different. Laurel and Oliver Hardy, with all due respect (I grew up with them they were the most famous in Italy) were not physically beautiful. Both of their characters were children. Laurel was the dumbest kid, Hardy the kid who thought he was the smart one but wasn't. With their physicality Laurel and Oliver Hardy could continue to be children until they were old. Physically they were FUNNY and people laughed at their funny physicality. Abbott and Costello were two professionals who were funny in their own way. But even Abbott (was he the comedian? I always get confused) physically wasn't handsome, he too could continue to make people laugh until he got old. It was their choice not to work together anymore but they could continue forever. Martin & Lewis were different, MUCH more complicated. They were "The Adonis and the Kid", "The Organ Grinder and the Monkey", they were "Sex and Slapstick". But Jerry has literally grown physically over the years. He could NO longer be a kid next to Dean who was nine years older than him. They could NO longer "play" dad and son, older brother and younger brother. Kissing on stage, while Jerry was still thin and young, was fun. But can you imagine the Jerry Lewis of the mid-60s, so sexy and above all so masculine, continuing to play the baby with Dean? Kisses on stage would no longer turn out to be innocent. Theirs was a physical comedy. To continue making films together even when they were separated, they had to change their basic comic construction. But would the public have accepted? It would have been nice if they made serious movies together but Jerry was fixated on comedy… No, they FROZEN Martin & Lewis in their youth. They froze their star up there BEFORE the star started going down. I don't know if they decided it together, if only Jerry wanted it, if the feud was real… (would the public have easily accepted their split if they said they got along? They didn't accept it with the feud…). M&L have remained young forever, this is also part of their magic.
