Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis had something magical, just those few seconds of interaction lit the room up. Jerry Lewis also shows how difficult it is to keep up with his comedic banter, the Martin and Lewis team made that look so natural and spontaneous. Thank you for this.

I had the same thought! Seeing him with Eddie you can see how much Dean complimented him, and then qhen Dean came out Jerry was injected with more light and joyful energy! Really special and sweet to see.

This was AMAZING! Seeing Dean walking on and joking with Jerry as if nothing happened (and Bing pulling him off was hilarious!). Thank you so much for uploading this piece of Martin and Lewis history (and also I wanna congratulate you on your great research work on the many times these two great entertainers crossed paths during those 20 years before the 1976 MDA Telethon).

That video, from 1958, is proof positive that Martin and Lewis did appear on the same stage years before the MDA telethon in 1976. The big difference is that Martin just said a few words and split. In 1976 he and Lewis tried (no thanks to Sinatra's interference) to have a conversation. As a side-note; Eddie Fisher seemed more surprised than Lewis did when Martin and Bing Crosby emerged from behind the curtain.

The airdate of this classic show was September 30th, 1958…more than two years since Lewis and Martin had officially ended their comedy act…story has it neither Fisher nor Lewis had any notion that Dean was backstage…and it would be another 18 years before the two would get together again….now that’s CLASSIC TV

No they got together again and had quite a few reunions in those years. The 20 years was always a myth. Dean and Jerry were on the same stage together during the '59 Oscars and the communicated there, as well as another televised appearance at the '66 Golden Globes after the show. I have another reunion on my channel, but here is the complete list we have currently of all the reunions: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qK1om7mqncKpopc.html&t=

I knew of Eddie Fisher growing up, but was not alive during the height of his career. I recently saw a KZread video of him singing with Andy Williams, and Bobby Darin for the first time. Boy, I had no clue how great of a singer he was. I love both Andy, and Bobby's voices, but Eddie could sing equally as good.

Fisher had a great voice. What torpedoed his career was leaving his wife (Debbie Reynolds) for Liz Taylor; who later dumped Fisher for Richard Burton. Also drugs and booze didn't help his singing voice.

What occurs in 6:05 proves a lot of things: 1. Jerry and Dean DID stay in contact after they split their team because they loved each other like brothers. 2. Bing appearing suddenly with Dean to surprise Jerry (and Eddie) shows that Jerry's claim about Bing and him having a feud associated with Bing's fear of Jerry messing with his toupee at a 50s telethon was not true or was exaggerated by Jerry. 3. As talented as all these guys were as actors, there's no way to hide true, spontaneous emotions when they are genuinely and pleasantly surprised, as Jerry and Eddie were, and 4. "Anything for a laugh", they were 1-derful crowd pleasers.

  • @markgiardina1303

I believe the feud issue between Lewis and Crosby was real because of comments Bob Hope made during an interview in which he said that Crosby either liked someone or he didn't and if he didn't then one would be on his 's' list forever. Perhaps Crosby participated in this surprise appearance as a favor to Dean, who he liked very much.

@@markgiardina1303 That's possible, I heard Hope saying something like that once. Besides, Jerry seemed unaware of who was the guy who pulled Dean back until Eddie made fun of Bing's song and singing style, as if Jerry didn't recognized him at first. Blessings from San Juan PR !!!

@@Donazify Thank you, I will probably use a lot of this. It's a bit of a puzzling story. While I know they weren't close after the breakup, there was always the perception that they had absolutely nothing to do with each other for 20 years years. Clearly after seeing all this, it wasn't the case. Was it a game they were playing with the media and public? Very intriguing!

@@TonyBoyOhBoy Someone confronted Jerry about the reunions once and why he didn't want to talk about them, and he said it wasn't anyone's business, and that they did get together privately on occasion. I have a very interesting article, that talks about the night of the break-up and where Jerry was interviewed just hrs after their last show together. The interviewer that was there said that Dean was red eyed and had tears in his eyes. This was very interesting since their bandleader Dick Stabile said Dean only had one tear in his eye, meanwhile Jerry was the only one distraught.

They had many reunions in between the years of 1956-1976. The 20 year thing is a myth. If you look on my channel there is another public reunion at the Coconut Grove in 1961. There was another one when Jerry hosted the Oscars in 1959, and Dean was on stage at the same time, and Jerry said " And they said Dean and I would never be on the same stage together again." There was another reunion at the Sands in 1960 where they actually did a 15 min act on stage together. This was in articles of the time and in Who the Hell's in It by Peter Bogdanovich. Also there are photos with dates and newspaper clippings from after this show, that state that Dean appeared briefly. All these date 9/30/1958.
