Jerry Lewis on Letterman, 1982, 1984

Jerry appeared on Late Night two times: October 5, 1982, and March 29, 1984. Here are both.
The promotional clip to the film he was promoting on the latter appearance, "Retenez Moi, Ou Je Fais Un Malheur," had been edited out due to copyright caution.
Late Night writer Stephen Winer:
"One of my favorite memories with David Letterman would be the day of Jerry Lewis' first appearance. There were a few genuine Jerry fans among us and I think we were all a bit nervous about meeting him because of his reputation for being difficult. Well, I had a chance to talk with him a bit and he couldn't have been nicer or more generous. Yes, I'm sure luck was with me. But I get to keep that memory. Then he went on with Dave and all this happened. By the way, the Jerry Lewis records Dave holds up are mine and I still have them.
"During a break he asked [Segment Producer] Bob Morton, 'How far should I take this?' Bob said, 'All the way!'"

19:00-21:00: Jerry is a creative genius no doubt, but boy is he exhausting. The constant pivoting, the moods that flip on a dime. The kidding when he’s annoyed and the seriousness when he’s happy. He’s hard to read. David was a saint here.

He worked to support himself from the age of 14, and gave his kids jobs, yet even in their own retirements, you think a 91 year old should still be shelling out for them all? Jerry and Dean was more in the parents age group not exactly cutting edge for a kid born in 1961. By the time we were old enough to get the humor he was already that telethon guy . sure he was doing movies on his own in the 1960s " Dont lower the bridge raise the Water" and "hook line and sinker " but he had already left Dean. He even had a chain of short lived movie theaters in the late 1960s and early 70s . He was at his best in Dean and Jerry movies The Stooge and Thats my Boy. That were in reruns by the 1960s and seen on the 4:30 movie by the 1970s He did so much For MDA charity and deserves iconic status for his unselfish pledge and dedication to the cause.

@@daniellebourgade8701 Danielle, I am absolutely certain that his estate was in serious trouble. EVERYTHING had to be sold exceptionally quickly and I feel that his creditors were kind enough never to make this public. Take a look at the interview with the lady who bought his house originally. So many things were left in the house and she made only a few minor adjustments before reselling again with some very personal items still present. This nice lady clearly buys property very suddenly, then moves on and is at great pains to express what a lovely lady SanDee Lewis was. His daughter is always the one to appear to discuss the estate - leaving me to think his widow is too distressed. This may well account for why his sons were left out of the will and why he seemed so careworn and bitter in later life as well as his grievous health problems. Frankly, I think the way in which Lewis was treated was disgraceful. His every move was demonised and whilst he was no angel whatsoever, the wrongdoings of his contemporaries were conveniently glossed over, whilst he was ceaselessly criticised. I hope the future sees his body of work recognised and assessed for what is was and still is - quite brilliant and groundbreaking.

The '82 Jerry is amazing. He could turn it on when he wanted to--or maybe better to say he turn off all the tiring, boorish behavior when he felt like it. He's really funny here. Letterman is also being gracious and letting Jerry riff all he wants to because he knows how good it is. Like when he had Andy Kaufman on, Dave would get let him go, feed him a benign comment or two like Carson was so good at. So altogether a great show business performance!

Jerry Lewis was a genius. Virtually everyone who dealt or worked with him said he was very hard to deal with, but successful, wealthy & talented people usually are. Notice he's almost chain-smoking & coughing in 1982, and only 2 months later he had a heart attack. Martin Short nailed it when he says to do a good impression of him you act like you're sucking on a lozenge. RIP Jerry.

It is also interesting how genuine he sounds, when he speaks about bad/cruel people. It seems an odd thing for a narcissist to do.

I suspect it will make painful and also uplifting and fascinating reading. That it has not happened since the 1990s when Shawn Levy's biography appeared and it is a disgrace. He IS fascinating, complex, quixotic, but NEVER boring!

And you can see how much Dave loves him but it's very hard for these two character / humor-types to co-exist on one stage! Which makes it even nicer when Dave gets Jerry laughing a few times. Great to see this now. R.I.P., Jerry. Thanks for always going WAY over the top and always owning it!

Jolar70: Jerry Lewis was not an old school comedian - his physical comedy style was ground breaking, he was way a head of his time and paved the way for so many other comedians, Jim Carrey, Lee Evans, etc... If an "old school"-label should apply it is that contrary to todays stand up comedians Jerry Lewis had learned so many facets of a true comedian's craft - singing, dancing, playing an instrument, conducting, directing, writing, the list cold go on and on.
