The first question was quite rude. “Have you ever thought about retiring?” Jerry takes it as a suggestion rather than a question. I don’t even ask my own parents that. They will retire whenever they want. I think Jerry was offended from the start and the interviewer did not rectify it. He just kept going with more ageist questions. Jerry didn’t try to rectify it either.

In 2000, I was an airline pilot on Boeing 757s, hubbed out of Las Vegas, Nevada. I was the First Officer on this flight. While I was taking our clearance to JFK, and programming our flight management system, Jerry Lewis invited himself into the cockpit, introduced himself, and shook our hands. It was something he did out of the superstitious belief that it kept the flights he was on safe. There was no intent to reach out to us as fellow humans. I say this, because later in that flight, while passing through first class, I paused at his seat to recount the fact that in The movie "The Bell Boy", he took a DC-8 up for a "spin". That DC-8's airline was the same name as our airline...40 years later. He looked at me with the same contemptuous look he's giving this poor reporter...in silence. I was beneath him, and he wanted everyone on that plane to know it. No wonder Dean Martin dumped him.

This interviewer didn't come prepared. Yeah Lewis could be a dick but I'm sure others used him throughout his career. The interviewer was obviously not a real fan. Terrible interviewer.

Jerry Lewis was an amazing actor. He actually convinced the world that he wasn't a complete asshole. His emotionally and sometimes physically abused wife and sons knew the truth all along.

@@TomYaz It does not matter who or what the interviewer is. JL was still a POS prick. The longer the interviewer was there, the more miserable JL was. If JL was so miserable, why did he consent to the interview. If the interviewer jus got up and walked away, Jerry would have made himself feel victorious. Like he did something great that no one else had ever accomplished. The only thing he accomplished was to die a poor, miserable lonely person when he could have surrounded himself with loved ones.

I had always liked him as a comedian, and enjoyed watching his movies---up until the time he revealed what an asshole he could be. My mother had taken my older brother to see his performance at a local theater. My brother was a huge fan, and couldn't wait to go and see him. The show was funny, as it was told to me. At the end of the show, he and my mother had seen Jerry walking with some of his entourage, not appearing to be in any hurry. My mother called out and asked if he would autograph a program from his show for by brother. Without breaking stride or missing a beat, he continued walking, looked straight ahead of him, and said, "No". Ever since then, I couldn't give two shits about him. Seeing how he behaved in this video didn't surprise me one iota. Kudos for consistency.

Just like the videos of some Cop physically subduing a suspect. And everyone cries Police brutality. But you don't see the video of the suspect resisting arrest and kicking, punching and spitting at the Cop. Both sides need to be seen before a judgment is made friend.

Do you know what the reporter said to Jerry Lewis before the cameras were rolling? Here's what we do know. Jerry Lewis has done hundreds and hundreds of interviews, and he was just fine. He gave detailed answers and did great. Did you stand up and cheer for him then? Nope. Bet everyone is ready to hang Lewis because of this one interview without even knowing why. And don't pretend to know anything about Jerry Lewis relationship with his kids. My brother was cut out of my fathers will because he was a lazy self-entitled person who was also disagreeable and mouthy. Did you know that Jerry Lewis left a great deal of money to his youngest daughter? Did he do that because he was mean and nasty? Stop judging without knowing the full story friend Humans are generally disappointing

It is possible that at this point in Jerry's life, he may have probably been sick and tired of being interviewed. I mean Jerry has been a celebrity (to my knowledge) for over 60 years. And I'm VERY sure that ANYBODY would've probably acted the same way Jerry did. I know if I was a celebrity for 60 plus years, I know for a fact, I would've told that interviewer to go f#@k himself after 60 years of being interviewed and people always asking for autographs, bothering me everywhere I went ect. So the way I see it, Jerry did the interview anyway and that makes him a better man then me. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he was a nice guy because through the years I've read things about him that wasn't very nice. I'm just saying that being a star for over 60 years can take its toll on anybody to where you see people as always wanting something from you like autographs, time, money, the same old questions that you've answered hundreds of times. So yea, I think if anybody had the kinda fame for as long as Jerry had it, they wouldn't be so nice either, not due to conceit, but to being tired of being harassed for 60 plus years.

What mean spirited old bastard. Kudos to the interviewer for attempting to engage.

I remember he suffered a heart attack whilst in Australia and the marvellous heart surgeons and nursing staff helped save his life. I later read in the paper that he refused to pay the hospital bill. To my knowledge, it remains unpaid to this day.

I was thinking the same thing ! The interviewer is very amateurish but in return Jerry is being obnoxious. Both men are not being professional ! For some reason, Jerry seems very angry, resentful and uncomfortable....that's his right (I would too given the interviewer's poor skills), but if so, why didn't he simply get up and end the interview ?? After learning how Jerry treated his ex-wife and his sons, I lost all respect for the man, no matter how innovatie he was as a filmmaker.

I just WONDER what in the hell the Kid did to warrant this kind of vitriol. The funny part is, he probably has NO IDEA why Lewis is being an a**hole. He probably didn't kiss his a** the way Lewis EXPECTED him to, and so he threw a quiet temper tantrum, on camera. THIS is probably just a small sample of the real Jerry Lewis and you can only imagine how massive a pr*ck he was when he was a younger man. Lewis legitimately believed he invented comedy, and HOW DARE some interviewer decline to acknowledge his Godlike comedic talent. Jerry Lewis was the kind of guy who HATED people who legitimately funny.

He is just showing what he was really like, I’m sure all the rumours about him are 100% true

His children said later in interviews that when they heard his car pull into the driveway at home they would run and hide cause some days he would come home angry and they were petrified of him.

This reporter needs to be given five stars for his ability to press on with this interview with interesting questions for a person whose laxative is just beginning to take effect.

The interviewer certainly handled this well...

My job for many years was interviewing 'celebrities', movie stars, actors, directors etc. for newspapers and radio stations. Please let me share what I know about a situation like this. OK the interviewer was a tiny bit unprepared in that he asked stock standard questions that Lewis would have had thrown at him hundreds of times. There's no religious angle in this as others have commented. Had the young interviewer been a rabbi it would have gone the same way. I've studied the dynamic of the Martin and Lewis years and right from day one Lewis did all the writing, all the arranging of venues, the travel management, the lot. Dean Martin wanted to play golf and Lewis was happy to let him do it. Lewis always knew he was the brains of the outfit; an easy thing to do when you're a control freak. There was a good reason why Lewis was never invited to become a member of the so-called 'Rat Pack'. It was because everyone who knew him thought he was an arsehole. In the movie 'King of Comedy' Jerry Lewis was not acting. He played himself. Go take another look at that film and you'll see the real Lewis. Lewis made a Will that "...intentionally..." cut out the six children he had by his first wife. If he'd wished to not have them named publicly as they have to be in a Will, he could have set up a Trust, but no, Lewis wanted to tell the world his six children "...and their decedents..." would not get a dime out of his $50 million estate. He didn’t state why; he just wanted the world to know these people would be penniless when it came to his fifty-mill. What a nasty man, a hateful man who's life's work was to make people laugh. In 1994 I had an opportunity to interview Lewis and it took me all of 3 or 4 seconds to think about it and turn down the offer. That's no ego thing, no bragging. I never interview actors or directors I don't like. Editors don't like negative pieces on world wide celebrities and I could never fake an admiration for Jerry Lewis. That would have made me as bad as he was. At the end of a phone interview with Don Rickles, one of my all time favourite comedians, I asked him what he thought about Jerry Lewis. He answered with a story: He said, "Jack Benny was one of the sweetest, kindest, most generous human beings ever born." Don, continued, "Let me just say this, you've got a huge problem in your life when Jack Benny dislikes you; to tell you the truth Jack loathed Jerry Lewis." I promised Mr Rickles that his comment on Lewis would be off the record and unreported until after Rickles's death. Thanks for your time reading this long post. Cheers, BH.

I believe that Jerry was telling the interviewer to get a day job.

What a miserable guy, this is a great example how unthankful someone can be and live a poor life. The richness in life is how well we treat others around us. Being a good neighbor starts right in our home right to every aspect of life.

Unfortunately, this was the real Jerry Lewis.

Yes, Jerry was well known in the industry as a “posterior orifice”, and it definitely showed here. To be fair, the reporter was ill-prepared. He was just reading the questions like a script instead of engaging with Jerry, and some of the questions could come off as rude, like the one asking him about retirement. I give the interviewer credit for showing patience and carrying on because it was obvious that Jerry was stonewalling this poor guy.

When we get older....we find it harder to pretend. When we get very old we stop trying to pretending. This is the real Jerry Lewis, but still, his ego couldnt refuse the interview

Im getting the sense that before the camera turned on the interviewer did something to upset Jerry. Notice how jerry says "im glad you remembered" makes you wonder if maybe off camera the guy said something like "i loved that sketch or movie.." and when jerry asked him which one the guy couldnt remember so jerry took it as the guy isnt a real journalist or fan and just trying to use jerrys name to get famous. Not saying thats actually true but certainly feels like thats how jerry was reacting. Im literally gonna start answering job interview questions like this from now on. Legend.

The epitome of not only dismissing the interviewer, but to everyone listening to this as well.

What ppl don't realize is Jerry had a sadistic streak... he had his sadistic personality flaw. Sadistic personality flaws are born from people who have an over aggressive personality Style. That's it that's what he had.... amazing.

This video clip edits out the important opening comment the interviewer made to Jerry: "We're doing a story about people still working in their 90s". If that had been left in, rather than edited out, people might understand the interviewer's comments or questions about age.

The interviewer was totally insulting. His questions were more like statements. -- which were insulting. Raymond Arroyo did an interview with Jerry that was delightful. Why? Because Raymond Arroyo is a professional who knows how to do a great interview AND because he is truly interested which trumps everything else -- being genuinely interested in the person that you are interviewing will result in a great interview. The guy who did this interview was pitiful. There was nothing likable or professional with this guy. It sounded like he just wanted to get through the questions/statements and wasn’t the least bit interested. So yeah -- I wish Jerry Lewis would have stood up and said “you need to go”, we’re done”.

Arroyo’s interview is meant to be styled like a conversation between a journalist and a subject. this interview is meant to give Jerry a chance to speak about things people may be wondering about. the “interviewer” isn’t really an interviewer, he’s just someone who’s relaying the questions. jerry agreed to this interview, he knew what the focus would be right before it started and when it was presented to him. if he didn’t like it, he shouldn’t have agreed.

That was amazing to watch. wow. I bet the reporter and his producer had a hell of a conversation on their way back to LA. I'd love to hear that!!

I remember seeing a memoir for former child actor Pamelyn Ferdin. She once worked with Jerry Lewis in the 60s and said he was a jerk back then. She said all he did was yell, criticize, and talk down to people.

I loved Jerry Lewis as a kid but WOW this is almost like interviewing Darth Vader.

This “is” the real Jerry Lewis. His overbearing personality wedged Dean Martin away for many years. There is documented his atrocious behavior to women he had sign contracts to work with him on a couple of skits or movies for a period of time. While he paid them well above other movie producers, once signed on dotted line…the most egregious things occurred and he held them to fulfill contract any way. Cast and crew jobs were on the line if he told them to never speak to that actress during contract. This year so much will come to light about usa as a whole. The country you never knew, but grew up in.

When I remember so many friends, relatives and acquaintances I've known over the years, many now passed, I am saddened to think this man was so miserable at age 90. So many people we know of would have dearly appreciated more time with loved ones, enjoying the beauty of nature, less health and financial problems. My only question is why Lewis agreed to do an interview at all; he obviously was not wanting to cooperate or even be civil to the interviewer. But maybe that type of behavior and treating another human being like something stuck on his shoe was his highest source of glee.

Watching his tv interviews from the 1960’s through the 1990’s he always came across as funny, charming and well spoken. This almost seems like a bit where you expect him to all of a sudden say “got ya” and turn into the old likable Jerry.

Jerry's final words in this interview: "Alright, clean it out of here." That would seem to be how he felt about humanity, including the kids, I believe, he pretended to want to help. We're to believe this person, Jerry, that referred to this polite reporter as an IT cared about helping kids, while abusing and disowning his own kids and grandkids?

This interview was funnier than any movie 🎬 he made!!

what's wrong with the interview, he's being straight up, honest with succinct answers, he's probably in pain and short of patients with young reporters stupid questions, which are poorly thought out, "how do you write a script, do you type it on a computer"duh I'm surprised he bothered with the interview

He would probably give the entire world to be able to give this interview again.

The interviewer was kind of insulting about essentially making it sound like he's asking Jerry why aren't you retired or going to retire, so I do not blame Jerry in any way about getting disgusted with this. Whether or not Jerry would have still behaved like this without that happening is a whole other thing. However, after it was clear shortly following how this all was going, the interviewer should have got up and basically said there isn't much of an interview here to continue, thank you for your time, and walked out vs allowing himself to be degraded further.

At his best, Jerry Lewis was almost as funny as a heart attack or an abscessed tooth.

I know a woman who was a child actor and was in numerous movies and tv shows. She has nothing but glowing things to say about almost everyone she's ever worked with. The lone exception was Jerry Lewis. She worked with him on a variety show in 1968 and said he was a total ass and didn't like him at all.

He was a Narcissist and all Narcissists masks slip and reveal who they are. Dean Martin escaped and saw what Jerry was all about. Just listen to his reason why he did the telethon by another interviewer. Dean Martin was classy. Jerry was a good actor .

Don't understand why the reporter didn't stop, turn around and ask if there was a reason for the rudeness. Then again, we don't know what may have happened before the tape started running

my mother, born in 1917, never liked Jerry but adored Dean Martin (he was in various movies with Jerry). I asked her why and she said he isn't what you think he is. Now that is from someone who never met him...and yet she just had a gut feeling. After reading the Vanity Fair story and others, I am heartbroken to say mom was right. Shame on him. I feel bad for the reporter, but kudos for him for having the good graces to continue the interview without losing his cool.

I remember watching this some years back and feeling really saddened by this..I was shocked by how rude and obnoxious he was and then puzzled as to why he agreed to do the interview in the first place.Really disappointed that he turned out like this ...And he didn't destroy the interviewer...He destroyed what trace of a good reputation he had...

The hatred for a stranger who has never harmed him is startling.

Jesus christ this man should of been in the grumpy old men movies!

I will always remember Jerry as a cranky, mean-spirited diva because of this interview. Thanks alot Jerry for showing your true self. .

I know I'm not the only one, all his friends disliked him and he disowned all his kids. He's just a tyrant, good for Dean escaping this monster when he did.

Victor Evans Jerry was a prick of the highest order, may he Rest In Peace, but I have to agree, the interviewer was a real ‘rookie’ and Jerry was going to make it difficult and he did.

The interviewer started off on the wrong foot. All he talked about was his age, growing old, health problems. He also didn’t do his homework on his career, which is also disrespectful.

@@WintersWarI was a minor fan of underground lounge act and actor Duke Mitchell and he had a partner Sammy Petrillo who was a Lewis imitator. Guess Jerry was just an ass to him and threatened clubs to not let him perform. I always viewed imitation as the sincerest form of flattery, it’s not like the guy is going to take your job anytime soon. Smart money recognizes stuff like those Beatles or kiss tribute bands actually fill your bottom line because it keeps your name fresh for people unable to see the real thing.

He was just an obnoxious, egotistical,individual .His behaviour in the interview was totally unacceptable

I saw a clip of him bringing young children who were physically challenged out on stage for his charity. The child was so embarrassed he kept calling them his children. Never liked him after that to be honest I never liked him

I’ll never forget as a young kid my grams took me over to one of her friends gatherings and just that weekend they went to see Jerry Lewis and they said he was the rudest bastard they ever experienced, as a young kid I’ll never forget the disdain in their voice as they recalled his concert , I knew him as the Labor Day guy haha boy they ended up hating him from that concert

Lewis behaved just a despicable as his character 'Buddy Love'. As a kid I got the impression even back then this was probably his true form.
