Jeremy Lin Is Hyped Because He's Asian

Спорт

Unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather who is the current WBC welterweight champion, is being criticized both by some boxing and basketball fans for his comments on Lin's success and popularity, saying his comments seems to border on racial discrimination.
"Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise," Mayweather, 35,said on his most recent Twitter message.
"Its OK for ESPN to give their opinion but I say something and everyone questions Floyd Mayweather, he added. "I'm speaking my mind on behalf of other NBA players. They are programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if they speak up. Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized"

Of course Jeremy Lin got attention because of his race, but even if he was White or Black, it still would have been an incredible Cinderella story, and he would still be in the news and highlight shows. Being Asian adds to the underdog story, Jeremy being Asian is the straw that breaks the camels back because it is a huge and unusual story in so many different levels. Winning streaks, monster numbers, coming out of no where, sell out crowds, and doing it in New York.

Floyd Mayweather: "Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise". Me: "Oh really Floyd? So African American players go to Harvard and graduate with a 3.1 GPA, go undrafted then become a sensation in one night, etc. First of all, I have yet to hear of an African America athlete go to an Ivy-League school (not known for athletics) without an athletic scholarship and still be successful in their sport. Sure Richard Sherman went to Stanford, but Stanford is known for being one of the only ivy-league schools with successful athletics, so it's arguable that he only got in because of athletics, not education. Second, the only person I know that went undrafted and became a star sensation in 1 official start was Arian Foster and he got his praise. Third, the Knicks are one of the most popular/well known basketball teams in the US, so when they're being lead essentially by some nobody, then that's why it's a big deal. Sure Jeremy Lin is getting some credit because he's Asian, and he's definitely representing the Asian community, but that's because Asians aren't known for Athletics besides martial arts. Think of it like this. Black people weren't known for being good at sports UNTIL Jackie Robinson and now Jackie Robinson is taught to us in elementary school during black history month. Floyd, you have an entire month dedicated to African Americans. What else do you fucking want?

...and February is the shortest month of the year and there is a lot of racism in that by the way. I could see if it was done in March or September for example. I agree with Mayweather on the fact that way too many Blacks do get criticize for showing their Black pride but everybody else can do and don't nobody say shit! This is more of America's White supremacy to shit on the history of a Black's in this country. But as far as Jackie Robinson goes Black's have been involved in sports for hundreds of years and in foreign countries. Keep in mind and this is real talk but as long as their is an unbalanced in this country with the way certain people are being treated which solely is based on skin color the conflict will always continue until the propaganda machine has been vanquished from planet Earth forever.

BBall Enthusiast - I agree with you for the most part especially with regards to Floyd being a complete idiot... but I take minor issue with just two things: 1. "Think of it like this. Black people weren't known for being good at sports UNTIL Jackie Robinson" Well, that is not really the case. Black people were known to be very good at sports, but because of prejudice/racism, were not allowed to compete in the white professional leagues. Jackie broke the color barrier in 1947...but remember what happened 11 years before? the legendary Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals at the 1936 olympics in Berlin, causing Hitler to be REALLY pissed that a negro had humiliated the "master race". The legendary Joe LOuis became heavyweight champion of boxing in 1937. Sugar Ray Robinson turned pro in 1940. The legendary Jack Johnson was world heavyweight champ in 1908. Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige were known as two of the top three players in the negro baseball leagues and even at the time in the 1920s and 30s, Gibson was referred to as the "Black Babe Ruth". Black players were playing in the NFL as early as the 1920s. The best college football player in america in 1939 was Kenny Washington of UCLA. Historically Black college football teams were full of talent going back to the 20s and black players also played at traditional programs like USC etc. 1916 was the first time a black player featured in the Rose Bowl. 1924 was the first time a black player won an olympic medal, etc. Everyone knew there were many awesome black athletes, they just had many barriers placed in front of them ,obviously. 2. "First of all, I have yet to hear of an African America athlete go to an Ivy-League school (not known for athletics) without an athletic scholarship and still be successful in their sport." Well first of all, nobody gets an athletic scholarship to Ivy's white or black since the Ivy's do not give them out (i think you know that but i was not sure because of the way you phrased it) ...but there are quite a few African Americans who went to Ivy schools and became successful in their sport (and in some cases, among the elite of the game) -Marcellus Wiley (currently a commentator on ESPN) attended Columbia, and played in the NFL from 1997-2006 and he was an all pro and pro bowler 1 time. -Calvin Hill (father of NBA player grant hill) was awesome. Attended Yale, played in the NFL from 1969-1981 and was a 4 time pro bowler and 2 time all Pro. -Reggie Williams (linebacker for the Bengals) went to Dartmouth and played in the NFL 1976-1989 -George Starke (Columbia) played for the Redskins from 1972-1984 -Steve Jordan (Brown) Vikings 1982-1994, 6 time pro bowler, 3 time all pro. -Brian Taylor (Princeton) 1972-1982, ABA/NBA, 2 time ABA All star. -Kevin Boothe (Cornell) current NFL Player since 2006 (won two super bowls with Giants) -Bo Roberson (Cornell) the only person in history to have an Ivy League degree, a Ph.D., an Olympic medal and a career in the N.F.L -James Blackwell (Dartmouth) 1991-2002 NBA -Desmond Bryant (Harvard) NFL 2009- to current (Raiders and Browns) -Dan Jiggets (Harvard) Chicago Bears 1976-1982 -Armond Hill (Princeton) NBA 1976-1984 There are many many others who played in the NFL/NBA etc and also others who succeeded in olympics and other sports as well Was not trying to argue with you, merely point out some facts, so please do not take it the wrong way or as a lecture.

Hyped because he is Asian? Black players does what Lin did every night? Those are ridiculous statements by Mayweather. Lin holds the record for the most points scored in a player's first 5 NBA games IN HISTORY...passing many basketball greats, black or white. The main reason for the story being as big as it was because of his unexpected high octane performance from a 3rd string bench player coming from nowhere to bring the Knicks & the Garden back to life and because it was in New York .. as with anything, it's magnified. I will always remember watching the NY-Lakers game when he poured in 38 points & I felt the electricity from the Garden from my television. It was hyped simply because it was a GREAT story!

Secondly, YAO MING WAS STILL IN THE LEAGUE! The NBA still had its Chinese cash cow so they didn't have to hype him up. Mayweather is not entirely wrong but is not correct as well. If Jeremy lin is not Asian, the hype will probably be lesser, however if a majority of NBA player is Chinese..there will be even lesser hype. I trying to say the hype is because he belong to an underdog group in term of race and he also almost gets cut by knick and another club, yet he achieve an incredible feat out of sudden. If you see who speaking for Jeremy lin now, you can tell he obviously fan of Jeremy lin and he not Asian. If you are smart enough, the conclusion is simple... Jeremy lin is inspirational.. because everyone had a moment where people don't think they can succeed because of their background

This is from a while back but here's my point of view from the time. Yes, a lot of it was cause he was Asian, and say it with me, THATS OKAY. Eminem had skill but he's outsold nearly every other solo artist ever because he's white. Doesn't make him a better artist and he recognized that privilege. Being a minority in a field will get you hype, whether it's tiger woods or being black in the ballet, and that's okay. That being said, he had pretty extreme stats for his first starts, most points and most turnovers. Offense sells tickets.

Tiger Woods praise is due to his ability as a golfer and his record backs that up. It's not the same as Eminem, or Lin, who both typify the inequality in Western society that needs to be eliminated if it is to survive.

So??? That's not the point. He was STILL on the Warriors. That's like saying Brian Scalabrine is a rookie because he's barely played that many minutes in the NBA. Just because you don't play in games doesn't change the fact that you're on the team. Don't make excuses for the dude.

  • @KingWithoutaCause

Are you joking? Do yo know what the term rookie means? It means someone to new to the NBA. The only way he could have been classified as a rookie would be if had an injury which prevented him from playing like Blake Griffin. He just didn't get playing time because he wasn't good enough. By your definition Scalabrine could've been a rookie for years.

Making a bunch of 3's is not taking anyone to school, that's like saying Steve Novak took a bunch of teams to school. Did you actually watch the games? Lin held his own on both meetings vs D-Will. The one who took Lin to school were the Heat and Rondo.

Out of control. Nobody talked about Lin until he did well. And what is Mayweather talking about? Do we not hear about Lebron, Paul, Kobe, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. on a nightly basis???? Sports are sports you gotta do well to make noise, regardless of skin color let's get past this.

The fact that he's Asian definitely factors in to why he got so much publicity. If he was black I don't think he would have gotten as much but he definitely would have got an immense amount still. The fact that he went to Harvard, was undrafted, waived twice, thinking about switching careers because he wasn't succeeding, sleeping on his brother's couch and subsequently Landry Fields couch before his first start, and the records that he broke in his first few starts merit lots of publicity

@dduong4505 I think he was spot on with what he said, even the other three guys had to admit it. I think people will always give $May discredit when he speaks on anything of controversy. It goes to show when a guy speaks his mind clearly and with longer than a 140-character limit people can take the message a bit better. So since he spoke his mind more clearly, people can accept the message from him? Makes me think it was the messenger ($May) all along, not necessarily the message 2 begin with.

@TaeNyShidae99 I think the guy on the left had a valid point. It's what I said from the beginning. No doubt J. Lin has played well due to his hard work and application of the sport. The amount of hype, which is a shot at the media, is due largely in fact that he is a minority in the sport. If you don't think this is true, follow me: 1. Jackie Robinson 2. Venus Williams 3. Danica Patrick 4. Larry Byrd 5. Yao Ming 6. Tiger Woods 7. Abebe Kibilu And why not have an opposing opinion? USA?

A big factor of his popularity is the asian aspect. I know asians who are big fans of him who do not even like basketball, but consider him an idol because of his achievement and the fact he is asian, to which they feel they can relate.

The fuck? Why would he take playing time from Curry or Ellis to put in Lin? They practice together, if Lin was good Smart would have noticed and put him in the game to see what he could do. But obviously he had an all-star caliber player (Monta Ellis) and one of the best young PGs in the NBA (Stephen Curry). His guard positions were already locked.

@Slemchaby The guy on the left had several good points. It was twitter with a 140 character limitation. How much substance can you really get out of that sparse amount of text? He was right, people are being lazy about the topic when ESPN was the first to bring it up. Westbrook has played phenomenally during the same period. Where is the BBC segment showing Chinese citizens flocking to buy Westbrook gear? (I know he's not Chinese). Diversity in theNBA is good, but the media has played a role

I agree with Mayweather that not only did him being Asian have a lot to do with the hype that he (Jeremy Lin) generated, but that also, African American players have put up his numbers and have faced the underdog obstacles that he (Jeremy Lin) has faced and encountered, and yet they haven't received a considerable portion of Lin's hype. That's a fact. And it may be, because we often see Black players doing this, whereas the Asian populace in the NBA is limited, but you can't disregard it.
