I can see why he hesitated before he told the story because it doesn't paint Kobe in the best light and with him no longer here people who knew him are reluctant to say anything negative about him out of respect.

in all honesty, it wasnt bashing Kobe. It was a good refreshing story. If you look at it a certain way Kobe kinda pushed him to be better in the regard of speaking up to himself. Imagine if Kobe took on the role as being a player coach instead of his usual role. He is still a legend regardless. I am a Sacramento Kings fan, but also love the way Kobe approached the game

@@thedagfather8807 officially yes, that was the worse season BUT what makes this one worse imo when you compare rosters. Let's not forget they came in as the favourites to win it all or at least get to the finals. Their underachievement was of epic proportions 😭

This is one of the best stories I've heard about playing with Kobe. Just really honest about Kobe's ego from a perspective of wanting to win games with a person he had to share the ball with. I also think a lot of players resented the attention Jeremy Lin got from Linsanity onward. But this is a great story of figuring out how to work with people and connect with people during the tough times

@reuben yeah his harvard education may help articulate himself but the way he carries himself as a person isn‘t taught in schools…i.e. how he handled the kenyon martin situation…had every right to bite back at him yet choose a classy way and gave him room to think about his mishap…it‘s a rare quality in times of self-centered egomaniac who are thin skinned for most part

JLin is a true warrior and just as he said, that season Kobe still had the "winning at all costs" mentality, that changed in his last season after he announced his retirement, then he became a mentor. JLin loves to ball and has an incredible IQ, but is a pretty humble human being.

Bro so true what he said about Asian culture, like unless u grow up in an Asian family you don’t understand how “wrong” it is to stand up or go against your elders/superiors. Mad respect for JLin to stand up to someone like Kobe, and really to compete in a game dominated by personalities like that. Like I cannot imagine all the shit he put up with simply for being a prototypical smart Asian from Harvard lol

you exaggerate asian culture. Depends on your parents. Not all asian parents are strict and demands absolute reverence. You have to respect your elders in every culture more or less. You can't dress people down when you're the last one in the room and haven't earned your respect yet. don't blame everything on asian parents when you're weak willed and a push over.

Big ups to Lin for standing up to Kobe... I don't think there was any Kobe taking things out on other players. It was more of Kobe testing Lin for firmness and the mutual respect that came from Lin standing up for himself. Kobe thought that Lin was too soft (this opinion came from watching them in practice). Part of the Kobe teammate experience was that mental 'irritation' he liked to do and how you responded to it. Playing in LA isn't easy for people with fragile egos *stares at Westbrook*... but I know that Kobe respected people he couldn't pushover--that is from his own confession

no, kobe just didn't like anybody soft. He always played at a high level and out worked everybody.

The fact that Lin stood up for himself against Kobe during that rough season made Kobe gain respect for Lin is awesome. Most players would be scared to stand up to Kobe but that’s how respect is earned, when you fight for your right and not run away like a scared punk.

Jeremy is an evolved guy who speaks from the heart. Not many people talk about this, but during his half-year with the Hawks, he spent a lot of time mentoring rookie Trae Young. You gotta think Jeremy would be a great coach.

RESPECT TO JLIN MAN

As a die-hard Kobe fan, let's just get this out of the way. Kobe does shoot his team out of games throughout his career, especially toward the latter part of his career. If you don't realize this, you are not a true Kobe fan. Fans live with him shooting the Lakers out sometimes. You cannot only take the good without the bad. The way Kobe always plays has such a small margin of error. Those tightly contested fade away over multiple defenders. Off balance three pointers. Going through traffic with contact layups. His body just couldn't keep it up anymore at that point. Nothing wrong with it. We all get old. No one is immured to that. Respect for JLin for standing up against Kobe. RIP Kobe my hero

Facts I'm also a die-hard Kobe fan but I gatta agree with this take. I remembered that game against the Nuggets when he tried to get the game winner over 2-3 defenders and missed. The Lakers ended up losing that game in OT. All Kobe had to do was pass the ball and this happened in the 2014-15 season a year before he retired. I wish he would've change his game like Lebron a little and let his teammates scored and stopped being a 1 on1 player during his latter years. He's still my favorite player tho

Jeremy Lin is always articulate and respectful. It was a joy being a Knicks fan and witnessing his 8 game performance run. Unfortunately he got injured and never really got back to that level. Nonetheless, he worked and was resilient in spite of all of his roadblocks. Salute to J Lin 🫡

Kobe was mad at the wrong people that year. He should have been mad at Byron Scott. Scott clearly had no respect for Jeremy Lin and had no gameplan to win games. Kobe wasn't mad at Scott because they were both teammates. Kobe also wasn't healthy and Lin had to be the main guy because he was the only one who could create his own shot.

Can't comment on how he was in his personal life, but he was sure an asshole on the court. One of the most selfish players I ever watched, back when I watched the game. That's one of the biggest reasons why his teams only won 4 percent less games when he was off the court, as opposed to the 35-40 percent lesser winning percentage when Jordan and James were off the court (and that's despite the fact they certainly had a few selfish moments of their own).

@@twondagreat8893 With James, I'm referring to events such as attempting to override his head coach when he was rookie, or more recently walking off the court with 5 minutes left. Generally, on the court itself, he has probably been one of the least selfish elite talents ever, at least for a non-PG. As for Jordan, yes, he was arguably more selfish than James on the court. In his defense, though, he shot so insanely well that he rarely shot his team into a loss. Kobe tried to shoot like he was Jordan, but he didn't have 50-55 percent field goal percentages to go with it, nor did he back it up on the other end of the court nearly so well. James is smart enough to shoot just the right amount to keep his field goal percentage way up around 50. But yea, MJ simply was so refined a talent that his selfishness rarely hurt his team. For Bryant, who was not nearly so efficient, it's a different story.

I really like this guy, and it's a shame he didn't get another chance in the NBA. He would be a great teammate.

Kobe's been falsely deified since his tragic death but props to Jeremy for being honest about the ups and downs of Kobe's legacy. The best way to honor somebody is to be honest about who they were, to capture their full humanity. Kobe was as complex, mercurial and contradictory a character as the NBA has ever known.

The Lakers didn't win anything after that...multiple coaches and teammates went elsewhere, while Kobe was left broken and stubborn. He's had beef with tons of his teammates. The Lakers sucked even after Lin left. Attitude reflects Leadership. It wasn't until Lebron and AD came, that the Lakers came out of mediocracy.

Kobe told a similiar story in one of his interviews after he retired. He said he gained respect for Lin after this.

RIP to Kobe but im pleased to see someone just being honest Jeremy is a real one.

how did kobe act like a grown man by giving jeremy lin the silent treatment after Lin stood up him and said to talk to him like a man and not a child?

" a few games when he had shot us out of the game..." Big respect to Lin for giving his honest thoughts about a person increasingly deified after his death. His memories won't coincide with the way Kobe Bryant is mostly remembered (i.e - flawless and revered) so it is refreshing to hear this.

@Sum body please, kobe was known to be using harsh words on other players. And problem of that is he's from a different generation where tough love was a thing. But in the 21century we don't use those old methods to motivation, rather we use encouragement and knowledge support which( frankly )just as effective but without the demotivation and insecurity attached.

@Sum body well, you watch their practices filmed and seems to be the case. I don't follow Kobe enough to say he's always like that but from practice videos I've seen, kobe did acted that way. I mean even watch the game when JLin was playing for the layers, kobe seems to expect the ball to be passed to him but never the other way round.

Jeremy is soo classy, modest, reasonable and fair. I would be pissed at Kobe too, if he was being condescending. They were teammates.

This is why Jeremy Lin is one of my favorite players. He seems like a good dude.

Glad he stood up to Kobe. But Kobe's ravaging body in his later years, as crazy as it is, were kind of his fault too, he was losing sleep over being the best. Like JLin said, he was sleeping like what, 2-3 hours, I mean that type of thing also ravages the body too.

IT wasnt the adjusting of the game more so that his body failed him like his shoulder injury at the start of 14/15 season was a routine two handed dunk and he tore his whole rotator cuff. I think if he wasn't focused on proving people wrong he coulda played more within the teams offence but to be fair the only competent player in that season was j Lin the centres didn't even understand how to play basic PNR and he had no shooters. The team construction was shit

This is the part that kills me, when Kobe said he barely slept. I don't care who you are, but sleep is critical for recovery, mental sharpness, physical energy, etc. And on top of that, he was taking his kids to school and being a family man. That's cool and all, but the severe sleep deprivation didn't help him.

Sounds accurate. I remember how painful it was to watch that season. Scott the Tank Commander. I lost respect for Scott that year. I think the Kobe being 35 but think like he was 25 was spot on.

Isn't CP3 35 and playing like he's 25? Had Kobe at 31 not gotten the CP3 deal vetoed there would have never been a torn achilles. Because Kobe would not have been forced into playing the point guard position and carrying too large a load. It was unprecedented and a criminal act to veto an already done deal. And back that up with a NBA created media fake narrative "that nobody wants to play with Kobe" to try to prevent him from getting any help.

I don't understand why teams won't pick up Jeremy Lin - he's not great, but he's a decent PG, and definitely good enough to be a solid backup.

Kobe was being an ass that year. Kobe was bad recovering from injury and was no longer himself but he still wanted to be the man, taking 30 shots with a very poor percentage. I remember in countless game, he was still taking bad shots thinking he was in his prime, but he couldn't do it anymore. So he would shoot Lakers into falling behind, then J Lin would lead the 2nd unit and catch up, but then Kobe had to take over in the 4th quarter and lose. Kobe couldn't have another guy run the offense and still had to be the man shooting 30 shots a game, that was why they couldn't coexist. Kobe couldn't admit that he wasn't who he used to be coming back from injury at 35. That year was horrible for Lin because he wasted a healthy year with the Lakers that was still Kobe dominant and was tanking by the middle of the season. Scott was limiting Lin's minutes because Scott was dominated by Kobe and was tanking. Whenever Lin played well and was making the Lakers close to winning, Scott would take Lin out. So Lin was coming off the bench in weird patterns, making it hard for LIn to get a rhythm. Lin still played well but he was often taken out when the Lakers were actually playing well without Kobe.

I am a huge laker fan and cannot recall between 2013-2017 where our second unit brought us back in a game led by jeremy Lin and Jordan hill. May be wrong but I doubt it. Lin was apart of our team for a season and did fairly well, but should have been a second option at PG. the PG position is the most competitive position in the sport right now and dude could only muster 11ppg in 25min of playing time. Like I said Not bad, but definitely not starter material. And most definitely not someone you should defer to in pivotal moments in a game. Last point: our roster was poorly constructed. there was no possible way we were going to win any games unless we changed our management. We had guys like Robert Sacre and Timofy Mosgov on contract. No way we were winning games

Thanks Jeremy for giving us this story. Love here more and more about Kobe. I knew his attitude wasn't for everyone but no one ever wants to me speak down him cause of the respect for him.

Cool story. Reminds me of a conversation I was lucky enough to have with my dad before he passed away.

All this inside story is amazing to hear. Wow never knew this. Also just goes to show how intense these 2 were about the game and how they wouldn't sleep and thought about basketball in their waking and sleeping. Living out their dreams. Mad respect to Kobes intensity and passion as well as Jlin for speaking up and confronting him.

biggest problem with Jlin was that with his play style, he has to be the play maker on a team.. which Jlin is pretty good at... But rest of the league did not give him a lot of chances, because he would be competing with Harden Kobe and Camelo on the same team.... and the few chances he had in Knicks and in Brooklyn..he blew it with bad luck (injuries)... If Jlin was a specialist, or after going to Hornets if he had trained to be a specialist.. knocking down 3s and occassionally being a sixth man... then I think JLin would be still playing. Oh well, Im still a fan tho... Hope he gets to play a few more seasons :)

I'm a Nets fan so it sucked to see him go out with an injury during the first game of the season and only play 37 games in 2 seasons. I wish he got to prove himself in Brooklyn. As a matter of fact, I wish he got to keep doing his thing with the Knicks. When Carmelo came back, it was said that Carmelo didn't want Lin to have the ball as much bc it would lower Carmelo's scoring.

Gtfo , the prob with Jeremy Lin was not being on the right team , he was a playmaker / shot maker with the knicks , found his role , yet Carmelo didn’t like it , wasn’t Lin fault , and never went to a team where he could be that man, i rather him be himself than settle for a role player , wasn’t a good fit cause Kobe is more of a old school style and lin is more soft mindset ; and bad luck with injuries

I love that he felt honest enough to give this story. The entity of "Kobe" is so romanticized these days that people forget that he was a flawed person like everyone else. Don't get me wrong, he is the "black mamba" and we can learn a lot about growth and becoming great via the way he approached the game, but we can also learn from his flaws and mistakes as well. There are different leadership styles but I feel that every great leader is someone who can both command respect but also give out respect to the people that he is leading.

All of Kobe's greatest strengths - his intensity, his work-ethic, his demand for perfection, his self-confidence, his never-give-up attitude - were also his greatest weaknesses. It's a shame he didn't mellow out until after he retired, because I think had he balanced all those traits with the generous and mentoring attitude he had post-career, he would have been even greater.

Kobe himself said he sacrificed many friendships for the sake of greatness. J Lin didn't prioritize winning over being a good person. Personally I would go the J Lin route, but I can't fault Kobe for the way he chose to go about things during his NBA career.

@@voldmerot Nicely put. Many people hate Kobe for his personality, but I think people mistake him to a certain extent. I mean yes, Kobe was egotistical and his self confidence was through the roof, but it was those qualities that made him successful like you said. He sacrificed one part of his life to win NBA championships. I mean majority of people will most likely take J Lin's/Tim Duncan type path but Kobe's way of approach also worked out. It is just matter of personal style and philosophy.

Even after winning finals mvp in 2007 he had to take a step back. Jeremy Lin had a moment and a decent career but much respect but Parker was next level.

Jeremy and Kobe weren't on board with tanking. The lakers were full on tank mode these years. It worked. We traded away young talent for AD and won a chip for it.

The reason Kobe got his unprecedented CP3 deal vetoed was because Kobe "with help" was the biggest roadblock in the way of Lebron James ( the NBA's poster child) winning championships. The reason why the Lakers got to put together a instant all star team was because Lebron James (the NBA's poster child) came to the Lakers and did what the league allowed him to do in Miami. You know when they allowed Lebron ( the 3rd best player in the league at the time) to join teams with D. Wade ( the 2nd best player in the league at the time) to beat Kobe (the best player in the league at the time). But they said it wasn't fair to small market teams to allow Kobe to get CP3.

Τhe last two years of Kobe were just sad. Granteed the 2014/5 team was just garbage but seeing Kobe shooting 35% from the field was painful. I would argue the 2015/6 team had more talent but I just felt the Lakers were happy with just letting Kobe shoot 6/20 every night and being an attraction rather than actually developing the young guys they had. If Kobe didnt ruprure his achilles , he would have an extended prime just like Lebron, being a top 5 player well after his 30s.

Blame D’Antoni for that. Kobe basically ruined the last few years of his career by going all out to make the playoffs that year in 2012 since Howard and Nash were riddled with injuries and D’Antoni was overplaying Kobe to win games and make the playoffs which eventually led to the achilles injury, it’s a shame. That’s why Kobe gets disrespected so much these days because a lot of these kids only saw his bad years at the end. RIP Mamba

What is sad is that, because Jeremy lin will speak up to kobe. It pretty much shows Jeremy definitely respected and valued himself, he probably spoke up for himself to other people. We all know the NBA management don't like when a player is like that, and look what ended up happening to lin's career.

You can tell Kobe had a lot of respect for Lin. That was a great story. Glad I was able to watch this!

Kobe and MJ don't play. He got Kobe's respect for sure!

He was great with the Hornets. That Walker+Lin combo was giving the Heat the business. Had a 3-2 lead in that first round and then Steve Clifford decided to cut Lin's minutes and they lost the last two games. Smh

Respect to this man ! He spoke up, when it was needed. How many players would actually talk back to ego driven Kobe. Or ego driven Jordan. They are all surrounded by yes mans.

problem was kobe still didnt talk to him till the end of the season. at least if that was jordan hed still mentor you to play better. kobe was like its me or nothing ill train by myself and let you lose cause i am not the superstar.

The other issue was how young the team was... They were immature and didnt seem to care, the youngins were prepared to suck for a few years Kobe wasnt... DLo was 19 airing out Swaggy P on snapchat... Kobe was surrounded by a bunch of kids in the final leg of his career and he wasnt happy about it... rightfully so

Props to JLin. This can also apply to real life situations.

Good interview, I think Kobe can be really hard on teammates to the point where some players just don't play with his same style to game, and it would be hard for him to accept or respect. Glad Jeremy and Kobe hashed it out, left things on a good note. Jeremy Lin good dude.....r.i.h Kobe

Love Jeremy Lin's mindset and attitude. He seems like that everyday guy you know who happened to have a great run in the NBA (who also runs the young adult bible study). The first NBA player I would want to meet.

He wasn’t as bad as MJ to his teammates. Don’t do Kobe like that. Jeremy is right about post Achilles injury kobe though. It’s tough when you have been so great, but can no longer lead by example in the same way. In contrast to MJ, at least he let go and showed respect. MJ has not even cared about any of the ppl he hurt and moves on like it’s just part of the game

He's paid max salary and not shown any sign of effort to improve his shooting IN FOUR YEARS. TF he deserves the criticism. Problem with his supporters, criticism = bullying

Dunno y but I've always had this feeling. This story doesn't surprise me at all

Good to hear this Lin-Kobe story and it ended on a good note. I wish Smush Parker had that same good last conversation with Kobe. RIP.

Props to Lin for standing up to one of the goats who was just goin thru it at the time and tripping out on his teammates. So many Kobe diehards are some of the biggest ball hogs ever thinking they can make all those crazy shots and do it all themselves like he did but not even Kobe could do that every night
