Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were best friends since the age of 14. Major impacts on music.
His total command of the instrument, from his grip on the tremelo bar, volume and tone controls and being able to manipulate all three, to his pick work and plucking combinations, not to mention his forward and back positions between the frets, and his incredible sense of dramatic effect is just an amazing package. He was inimitable. He took the electric guitar farther than any other musician ever. Plus he surrounded himself with amazing musicians and appreciated them all. @@brianreid3267 What "hard living" did Jeff do? I think he stayed out of the drug scene altogether, he was a vegetarian (whether good or not, it indicates a certain level of self-concern), and I don't think he participated in the kinds of shenanigans that the members of Zeppelin did when they were storming across the US in the 1970s. I think Jeff was uniquely focused on two passions: music and hot rods.

Amazing to think 3 guitarists of their calibre grew up within 15 miles of each other, at the same moment in time . Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Jimmy was very gracious and clearly ecstatic that Jeff was receiving this honor. Must have amazed them both, remembering their early times as boys. And Jimmy's comments to the question about bands trying to succeed today - really, it's a whole other world. When Jeff and Jimmy came up, rock was the big new deal and they were at the forefront of a genre (rock!) that had a massive international audience. Now rock is a niche, much diminished in sales a concert draws, and fading as is the oldest of the Boomers. It's difficult to see a rock band achieving such widespread success today. Sadly.

Let's get a few of the guys together out in the garage and see what happens ... Jeff had it figured out -- stubborn talent, enough fame to be fun but not so much as to make life a public spectacle, a beautiful wife (talented in her own right as a painter), a barn full of cool American hot rods to play with, plenty of respect from his peers, and the good sense to do things his own way and pass on while still at the top of his game. Beck was one of the very few who remained both innovative and relevant for decades. Unlike most from his generation, he always brought an anticipation for was to come rather than relying on a nostalgia for what had been. This is a far greater loss to music than those who may have been more popular or have more accolades.
Back in the very early 80s I was bartending in a place called Houlihans on Bourbon Street in New Orleans and a guy comes and sits down at the bar and wants to know where the locals go to hear good music , instead of the tourist traps. I was getting off work in around 20 minutes and would be happy to give him the locals tour . Off we went to Maxwells and other local hangouts for a good portion of the night. Way in to the wee hours of the night we made our way back to where we had started . He thanked me for a memorable evening of good booze and good music and I thanked him for letting a nobody like me be his tour guide. The guys name was Jimmy Page , yes that Jimmy Page.
