In my humble opinion as a connoisseur of guitar rock 1965-1975, there has been no better proponent of electric guitar. Some may be faster, some 'spacier', some more bluesy. But Jeff Beck was the total package.
It's a year today since we lost Jeff and I'm still in mourning !!!

Don't mourne, celebrate The Grace of God as Shown in The Life of Our Friend (Quaker Meeting for Worship term, upon the passing of a Friend).
While walking with a friend in Central Park one Saturday, we came upon a natural amphitheater formed by the park's landscape, and at the bottom of the hillock upon which we stood, a band was setting up to play a free concert. We sat down to watch and listen to what turned out to be Jeff Beck, with Rod Stewart, Nicky Hopkins and Ron Wood playing all the songs from the Truth album, which had maybe? just been released? I have carried that memory ever since.

They were both the kings of their respective styles, Jeff Beck was fortunate enough to have lived long enough to have a much larger musical legacy than Hendrix did, as he died in his 20’s. Who knows what Hendrix may have morphed into if he’d had another 40 years of life to look back upon. Just another old guitarist, with an opinion.

Jeff Beck's Mother was concert trained and so was my mother. That is how he found the strings on the back of the piano, and INSIDE THE piano. That is what Jeff BECK LIKED THE BEST! So did I!! I understand this.Cynthia Allen-McLaglen
One of the most important aspects of Jeff was his support of female musicians, actually jump starting the careers of Jennifer Batten and Rhonda Smith after her tenure with Prince. Tal Wikenfield was virtually unknown until Jeff plucked her up, although she still would have been the outstanding musician she eventually would become. As big as he's been over the years, the nurturing and mentorship of female musicians was refreshing!

Jeff Beck has always been the best of the “big 3” British blues rock guitarists, now more than ever. Jimmy Page is the mad professor, the ultimate rock producer & arranger, Clapton captures the spirit, emulates & channels their early mutual heroes, and Beck has taken the guitar and made it an art form. He’s the ultimate tasty, badass electric guitarist.

@@jamescatlow7887 I love the PG era but in terms of chops Green wasn't even the best guitarist in that lineup. He had a fantastic voice, wrote cool music, looked great, and had a unique tone; but in terms of chops and licks he just wasn't on par with the big names from the british blues. Jeff Beck will probably always be the Jordan of that scene but let's not forget Paul Kossof or Peter's protege Gary Moore. Hell, I'd even put Iommi as 2x the guitarist Green was in terms of chops but all of that misses the point of the package deal that made him interesting. I love B.B. @judgegarry - I think you're mostly right, but the really magic part for me is the way he did things first - much like other great guitarists, Jeff Beck inspired other guitarists to emulate the way he played, but he had to invent the way he sounded, and the guitarists he inspired were following a trail he had already cleared. One example was when he was sitting in a recording studio with a guest sitar player, and figured out that he could play close enough to a sitar on his guitar that they didn't need the sitar player. Lots of people have sounded like Beck did on "Shape of Things", but when Beck recorded that song, NO ONE had sounded like him!
@cravinbob
Жыл бұрын
I disagree since who wants to copy Beck? I suppose when he quit Yardbirds mid-tour the bass player jumped into the role and had to keep the Beck sound going for a while. Many like Beck play experimental stuff other than rock and each finds what they like and may cop a lick ot two from others. I guess it is improv jazz rock and you got Metheny, Steve Morse to name just two. Beck has done many different things but all those guys use certain pickups, bodies, effects, tunings, amps etc and they know how to play. The one that nobody can copy is Jimi Hendrix, even though some have tried and even SRV was close on Voodoo Child but those of us with ears can tell the difference in a few seconds. Not a slam on anyone, but Jimi was just that good and even invented the sound that everyone tries to copy. Who can play at all 10s and use feedback for the melody? Guitars off the rack2 pedals and a wah and a couple Marshall 50 watt. In the studio it was different but only on the board. Have you heard and read the page that features the creation of his All Along the Watchtower? All these great players are treated by british idiot narrators as failing because they are not in the "Charts"! Crappy little documentaries (Ha) abound. We are a special breed because we know what is real and don't fall for sappy tunes created by a team of inventors. George Martin worked in a small corner studio owned by Capital records but Parlaphone on the label. One day someone came in and said these cats are The Beatles, see what you can do. Almost overnight Beatles were on Capital proper and George became Sir George. How many tried to copy that? Most of them. Davy Jones of Monkees really thought they were just as real as The Beatles. Now kids today say "Well, the Beatles were a boy band"...arrrggghhh Yeah right and Jimi was just loud noise... My friend Rick Danko could whip out straight jazz chord/melodies I learned when I handed him my 59 ES-175. I told him to stop. You can't do that you are a bass player I said! I was joking but he astounded me. If you have not seen this give it a look kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGt6s6qLldWem6Q.html

Jeff Beck could play the goofy saxophone theme from the Benny Hill show in such a way that you’d end up sobbing and missing your mother. The man was a singularity, a sort of freakishly talented guitar sound smith. His dynamic range is unparalleled, as is his range of emotion. He could caress the strings so gently that your heartbeat would overwhelm the amplifier, then raise the intensity to that of a solid booster rocket engine, and the tone never suffered a bit. His triple pianissimo had just as much body and weight as his triple forte. His stream of consciousness style of improvisation was as clearly defined and boldly stated as any classical music composition ever created. The four pieces that Jeff and his band played at the Crossroads festival concert I watched today were absolutely stunning. Unbelievable. Jeff and Vinnie Colaiuta were cut from the same cloth👍

It seems to me Jeff Beck did things on his terms, within his timing and was obviously the best of the UK if not America. Some are content to be a studio guitarist and earn a great living. Although Glen Campbell was from a different Genre and Era in 1960 he was an active studio player and earned a cool $100,000 per year. In today’s dollars Glen was earning One Million per year as a member of the Wrecking Crew, a group of super talented musicians who played on many album’s, Frank Sinatra, and all of the Rock and roll star’s of his time. Then he went on to be a successful artist in his own right. Jeff followed his own path and is to be admired for his contributions.

Your aspiration is commendable, but you'll be at your best just sounding like you (something that, as a singer, it took me too many years to realize: now I find myself in a band at 68, understanding that at last, trying to start something! Can I do it? That remains to be seen. The public has a hunger for young attractive female singers, and though not unattractive for my age, well, there is my age, as an enormous obstacle. Thank goodness I have no interest in pop music: that just might be my saving grace.) If you play to your greatest strengths - assuming you know by now what they are - you can't go wrong! I urge you to go out and find your own groove, then ride it all the way to your goals, whatever form those take (my friends have all urged me to start setting my sights low at first. If I don't get out of my own town, at least I've had a good time before I stop, whenever that may be. If I find no success as an artist, then perhaps at least I could sell my songs.) I hope you'll try - it's never too late!
If getting strange noises out of a guitar is your thing, Jeff Beck's your man. But if you prefer actual music, there's a LOT of other players to listen to...

Later three cute girls took me to see Beck in the park, they wete all squealing and changing clothes in the back seat of Patty Carrol's '55 Chevy across the Bay Bridge. I ran into James Cotton who showed me how to soak my Marine Band harmonica in a glass of water to make it louder playing the parts of Yardbird songs. 3 years later I was kicking a drunk Rod Stewart out of my Holiday Inn room in DC while on a tour. It seemed a small world when Jimmy Page astounded us playing his telecaster with a bow in an old grocery store turned rock venue. That was a Yardbirds gig after Jeff left. A gig that was as memorable for seeing the unknown Page as it was for meeting my first real high school girlfriend. What a different time it was. She dropped acid on her birthday and drove me to the Fillmore to see a gig with Hendrix as a third billed opening act, my life changed over night, I lost my virginity as well.
Jeff has been on my mind for weeks, and I have put off watching this brilliant documentary to watch little shorts of him almost everyday, he has been such a tremendous musical influence for me not only playing guitar, but also how to still have it as we grow older. He transcended music and guitar, everyone who ever met him had only the nicest things to say about him..from a limo driver showing him around the area before a gig and him trying the local favorite drink, to one of my closest friends meeting him back stage presenting him with vintage 50's hot rod decals. Thank you Jeff for everything you ever gave us. God Bless you
I remember seeing Jeff with Jan Hammer live back in 1978....I was so blown away.....He was the very best and especially with the whammy bar....He will be forever missed and remembered....🎸🔥👊💪🙏
He was a great musician and gitarest.i thaught him quiet sexy when i was young at the age 0f 14 onwards..REST in peace Jeff ur not forgotten Godbless you 🙏🕊🦋🐬🌹🌟🌈🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸AMEM
Rest in Peace Jeff, you moved me more than any rock guitarist in the long history of the art form, there will be better technicians but never a better or more soulful rocker. Loved you man.
I can't believe Jeff is gone. I always thought he looked so healthy and fit. At least he left quickly and in peace. I'm really sad right now. Rest in music heaven Jeff I'll be there to play with you when I get there.

I think it took everyone by surprise because it happened so fast. In a way he was lucky. By that I mean that if he was going to die from this infection he didn’t have to go weeks or months being extremely uncomfortable. About ten years ago I got a very severe lung infection that lasted over three months and it was brutal. Couldn’t sleep or do much of anything. Just laid in a bed gasping for air.

Been a fan since the early 80s. But yeah he went into hiding or something….I got a chance to see Jeff Beck in 2018….needless to say my camera hardly stopped. Sooo talented, his sound is unmistakable.
So many good songs, Becks bolero is one of my favorites
I saw Jeff Beck with Stevie Ray Vaughan at Cobo Hall Detroit Michigan November of 89 I took my little sister she never heard of either one of the guys after your show she said brother you need to practice LOL
RIP Jeff!! You're truly one of the greats!!!
I was able to see Jeff Beck & Jan Hammer in 1976 , believe Me , I was truly impressed ! R.I.P. J.B. one of the masters of guitar playing.
You had Jeff Beck and then everyone else that wished they could play the guitar like Jeff..my name is Jeff as well so I have that connection but more importantly I'm also a guitar player since the age of 11....we will all sure miss your genius Jeff...🎸🎸🎸
Always changing, always ahead. RIP Jeff.
He had such a massive output....hard to know all of it unless you're a fanatic. I'm catching up
I realize now that I was blessed by being able to see him live twice. Thank you Jeff. One bad ass .
In over 50 years of playing, I’ve never picked up a guitar without thinking of JB. The loss of BB King hurt equally.
Jeff Beck has a unique guitar style. There is nothing else like it. He is such a gifted and humble musician. I saw Jeff Beck twice live and met him. Cheers!

Jan 11 2023. Beautiful Jeff Beck has died I am so sorry and sad... His music will live on
I was always trying to See Jeff Beck !!!!!!
Nobody else will ever be close to Jeff. Rest well sir, and thanks for the tunes and the tones.
Something has snapped in the guitar-driven, blues-rock world. Jeff Beck was always there for us, starting with Shapes of Things, which at the time I wasn't even sure the solo was a guitar..!! But all of a sudden, a force that seemed timeless, immovable and yet fluid has disappeared, leaving, for me anyway, a void. It's like the passing of a fave family member.. His appearance never changed, including his Beatle-esque hair style, but his music never stayed the same. He could be everything to everybody, and one only had to go through his catalog, no matter one's musical interest, to find a gem that would make them a fan. I never tried to play Jeff Beck riffs, unlike with Clapton, Page, Bloomfield etc. His playing was beyond my understanding to process, mentally or physically, so I didn't try. Instead, I just became part of the listening audience. I was a big fan.
ALL THESE YOUNG MEN IN EARLY 60S BANDS GOT RIPPEDOFF!!!
Beck was the columbus of guitar players. He always explored new territoy ahead of everyone else, leading the way forward.

I always forget Jeff's "vintage" self... what a pioneer. His pushing the boundaries put him ahead of, or younger, than any old timers.
I really enjoyed watching this documentary. Those people involved at the time all those years ago describing how things were. They have / had such respect for him. Great to see them as well as hear what they had to say of Jeff. I don’t know why it’s not an official documentary. ❤️🎶RIP Jeff Beck
RIP Jeff; you were a genius.

I love all the gentlemen that comment historically about what happened at this point, and wish we knew their names because they explain what happened so very perfectly and in such a detailed way! The incident when the sitar was not quite working, because he had the time signature wrong, and Jeff went away and came back half an hour later, and said ,"I've got something! He had worked out the time signatures which were not working yet with the sitar and put it right, when they were practicing and came back, having found out a way to fit in the sitar with a different time signature, in "Heart of Soul, and it became a "Rave-Up" in that song and others later on in time! These moments were like the improvisations in Jazz in the middle of a song, which Jeff would have heard with his Uncle in his car playing the radio, which had a big influence on him. The Yardbirds made "ROGER THE ENGINEER" 1966, & Jeff Beck's "Jeff's Boogie" was brilliant instrumentally, and very daring as it verged into Jazz. His playing was brilliant in it. Jeff's Uncle loved Jazz and played the music in his car, and that had a big influence on Jeff Beck, especially "the Breaks" which are important in Jazz playing, and with the more sophisticated breaks in "Roger the Engineer" which were quite tricky, this made a big impact with our cousins across the water! I really love this part of the history from all these people who were there to witness what happened in detail. I understand this because my mother was like Jeff's mother, a concert pianist and she was also a professional Jazz pianist and was always talking about how important "Breaks" were. Please tell us the names of the gentlemen who explained the music so well, and brilliantly in great detail!!! Cynthia Allen-McLaglen
😢 Jeff ❤ 1944-2023
Thanks for sharing that documentary. Pure gold footage! Jeff is and will be missed!
Jeff Beck Group. Album 1972. One of the greatest blues/rock treasures ever.🥰
I'm enjoying going through to hear some of Jeff Beck recordings I missed through the years and yesterday I heard Bob Tench died. Bob was with The Jeff Beck Group through a underappreciated period with the albums Rough and Ready etc. It was the first time I heard Beck's jazzier influences and is worth a listen if you haven't heard those.
Dude's had the exact same hair since '65.
I am still reeling... from this loss...of sheer musical genius...can't stop playing his music....
i've seen Jeff Beck live on a hyde park london free concert in spring 1970. i was 14 years old. never forget! :-)
Even with the long and successful run that Beck had, I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around everything he achieved. Very few of his equivalent peers are still around, and the ones that are usually aren't as busy as Jeff was until the end. This is a massive "end of an era" moment.
Wow rip we now have missed one of the best Talents
