Jeep Wrangler YJ - How to find your gear ratio and Dana 35 getting scrapped.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'm junking the Dana 35 that came from my Jeep Wrangler YJ. As I tear it down I show 3 ways to find your gear ratio. I explain all the internal parts as I show how to disassemble it.

    I am getting frustrated with the power and speed of my 95 2.5 yj with 33 inch tires and 4.11 ratio with a top speed of 55 mph , watching your video gives me an idea of changing my gear and pinion.the question is what ratio should i go with so i can at least cruise at 65 mph ?

    Superb video. Very informative - step by step. Thanks! Question: when I turn my driveshaft there's a little play before the wheels start turning. Is this normal? Should there be any backlash or should the wheel move exactly at the same time you turn the drivshaft?

  • @Poweraddicts

    @Poweraddicts

    6 жыл бұрын

    There is always just a slight bit of movement. How much depends on how much wear the ring and pinion gears may have. So, you will get a bit of driveshaft movement before the wheels move. Hope that helps! Have a great day!

    Loving the yj videos, on mine it looks like they flipped the axle over and did a spring over swap. Is it safe to run it that way or will it mess stuff up

  • @Poweraddicts

    @Poweraddicts

    5 жыл бұрын

    As long as the flip was installed properly it's fine. Many older 4x4s came factory spring over axle. The only catch with the YJs is that you should have an anti-wrap bar on the rear diff to prevent spring wrap under acceleration. Have a great day!

    Thanks again, Chuck, but question: I know you are junking this rear end, but for those of us not having another rear end to exchange; in looking at the galling of the saddle housing for the carrier, would it be reusable with a new bearing and race? Is this rear end, in your opinion just junk and should be scrapped or is that your choice? Could it still be reused with any hope of longevity?

  • @Poweraddicts

    @Poweraddicts

    6 жыл бұрын

    Honestly, not for long term. The shims and the galling of the housing would allow the carrier to move too much in the housing. If I really had to put it back together to use it, without question the shims would have had to been replaced and possibly adding more to tighten it up. A proper fitting carrier needs to be pried out, you saw that one actually fell out. So, overall, the whole diff housing was beyond usable repair. Thanks, that's a good valid question. Hope my answer helps. Have a great day!

    Question, when you swapped your rear axles (the 3.55 into your 91) didn't you have to change the ratio of your front dana 30 axle to match? My uncle has a older AMC 20 axle from a CJ7 and I was thinking of swapping it for the 35, but it may be better to just re-gear the 35 and 30. I'm currently running 33X12.50 tires on my 95' YJ and not getting much out of 5th gear.

  • @Poweraddicts

    I still need to swap front axles to get my gears to match. Because of working what seems to be all the time, I dont get to where much. Within the next couple of months I'll swap the axles to get the gearing to match. You would be better off swapping in an 8.8. The Dana 20 and Dana 35 are both weak diffs.

    Count your ring gear teeth then your pinion gear teeth then divide the number pinion teeth into the number of the ring gear teeth and that will be the (exact) gear ratio....
