While the water pumps on these engines have minor differences and connection options, the actual pump and the process to change it are similar. The main difference is treads for a mechanical fan or no treads for engines that utilize an electric fan. As you'll see in the video, some plugs, pipes, and connections are slightly different, but the disassembly and reassembly are very similar.
I've tried to keep a quick pace in the video to get you on the job as quickly as possible. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments, and I will try to help you if I can.
There is a list of tools and parts and a belt diagram at the end of this video. Feel free to pause the video and take a screenshot for reference. This can come in handy to make sure you have everything you will need before you get started; I will also include affiliate links here to simplify your search for parts and tools.
OEM Water pump - This is much more expensive, but the cheaper after-market pumps may not come with new sensors or plugs. In my opinion - On this engine, these pieces are easily changed if they later fail. I opted for the much less expensive aftermarket part, but this may be a better option if you need these parts.

Great video - I like the production pace and edits. No rambling. I would suggest that the idler pulleys and tensioner should also be replaced. Mine were lose and did not spin freely. My water pump shaft was very lose and rattled when idling. I'm surprised it held water under pressure - 2017 Jeep GC Trailhawk 5.7L with only 53k miles (but, 7 yrs old).

Thank you! I agree the other components should be replaced. I’m pretty sure this was the 3rd water pump on this engine and it appeared that the pulley and tensioner had been replaced once before. I don’t believe this pump actually failed. I believe it was the gasket and permatex that started leaking.

Great video with really good info. The only thing I'll add is about the plug. The one you swapped from the sensor hole. That hole is the bleeder plug. Leave that plug out until you fill the system. Once coolant starts coming out put the plug back in. That will make bleeding the system a lot easier.

I’m going to agree this is one of the best DIY videos I have watched, describing and even listing the bolt sizes, torque specs, etc. My 2006 had a couple differences as the tensioner needed just the 1/2” square end of the wrench and the pulley used a stinking torx that I had to go get but sorry can’t remember the size. Thank you!

To just a little point. When you put your thermostat into the housing, take a look at the thermostat. There's a hole on the edge with a "jiggler" inserted in the hole. This is to help bleed the air from the system. For the Jeep, you'll want this hole to be at the top.

This was the best replacement video for my 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7. The only additions that I would add is to take a picture of the serpentine belt routing and to not be cheap with the thermostat gasket. Make sure you get the rubber gasket to not only seat around the water pump orifice but to also have the lip protrude as to make the seal. I ordered the AutoZone (Duralast Thermostat 41603) thermostat and it worked fine. Literally took 2 hours and 4 hours of thermostat leaking problems. And don't forget to buy 2 gallons of the PEAK OET Antifreeze / Engine Coolant!

Bout to change mine tomorrow on my 2011 grand Cherokee 5.7. Local parts houses here do not list that heater pipe oring. I know I could run it back to town and match it up for less than a dollar but here in Texas we're having 102 104 temp days so I wanted it in hand to get it over with quickly. Resorted to buying that oring from the jeep dealer parts and you'd think it was going on the space shuttle. $15.36 for what amounts to a 30 to 50 cent oring. How can they justify such markups

That’s insane! The entire 400 piece oring kit/set I have was around $15 US dollars. amzn.to/3OW36ok One thing I have learned over the years that might not be the most ethical… But, When you go to any dealer for parts drop the name of a local repair shop. Tell them you’re buying parts for them and generally they will give you their discount, sometimes as much as 80% off! This works at a lot of parts stores and I’ve never once had anyone question me about it. Most of the parts counter employees know this is a scam but they can’t say anything to you. If you drop a name that offers a discount they are happy to play along.

@@baldeagle242np. I recently replaced my thermostat and coolant temp sensor a few weeks ago and now I have a coolant leak I can't track down. Only leaks when it's running and doesn't seem to be coming from the water pump....but then again it may be leaking at the bottom of the water pump where there's little visibility. Going through a gallon of coolant every few days. $12+ a jug is getting expensive. May have to drive it on my ramps and crawl under with it running which I don't think is too safe.

@kennethdurbin3385 These things will nickel and dime you to death. Mine started out as a leak similar to that and eventually turned into a full stream. If you have an inspection mirror with a handle you may be able to see it from the top side.
