Jeep 258 Cylinder Head Performance Modifications, Project Updates

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video a quick look at the V6 CJ5 project. I have the body on the lift and the chassis out of the paint booth. Frame and running gear are painted and the wheels are now a beige color instead of white. A little bit of chassis work and the body can be bolted on.
Next I am doing some work on the AMC Jeep 4.2 258 engine. This is not a do it yourself at home type of modification, it takes some tools and knowledge, but will make great horsepower.
Milling parts of the head, boring for valve guides and beginning to show you how to make power from a 258 cylinder head.

    I am hoping the new 258 is a good one as well. I got it for a great deal but it is stuck and hasn't turned over for many years. Just need a good crank so hopefully it will come apart without too much trouble.

    I did some heads when in high school for a speed shop using the old stone method. A few years ago I was doing all the head work for an engine rebuilding shop. All new equipment. I really learned a lot about head work from tonight's video. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.

    Not a lot of folks do the kind of things I do and this modification is one of them. Takes a lot of work to get Chevy valves in a Jeep head but the power is amazing when it is done correctly. More to come soon.

    Great video Brian, lots of interesting info there. I would to kill to have a shop like yours! If you don't mind me asking, where did you learn how to do all this machine work? If you are like me, you just learn by doing. I remember when I was probably 6 or 7 years old, passing tools to my dad when he was working on his pickup, which by the way was a 1959 Willys!. I rebuilt my first engine solo when I was about 12. Great job, looking forward to the next video.

    Thanks Jeff, glad you enjoyed the video. When I was young I had the opportunity to work with a lot of older, experienced mechanics and always asked a lot of questions and was willing to try anything. Many years later and with the help of great machinery I am turning out great engines, transmissions, transfer cases, body tubs, etc.....etc...... to people all over the world. More videos on the way.

    I'm not going to comment on which idea is right or wrong. The way I understand this is that the umbrella type seal is supposed to allow a certain amount of oil down between the guide and valve stem. The positive seal is supposed to stop all oil going down. Supposedly, if you are using something like a phosphor-bronze or oil-holding guide, you can use the positive seals. If you're using cheaper, regular bronze guides, some oil down there will keep them from wearing too much. In theory, you can can have something that uses no oil and lasts a long time, or you can have something that uses a little oil but lives 'forever'. That's my understanding. YMMV and all that.

    Hmm looks similar to a jeep I had. - 258 6 cylinder - 380 Holley, 4 barrel Offenhauser intake, Hooker headers that were dual exhaust that followed the firing order, spaghetti tubes…..

    I’ve been into Jeeps my whole life and have never seen the Chevy valve install. I’m really excited to see how you get some power out of this 258. How would you compare what you’re going to build to those 4.7 liter stroker motors I used to see in the back of JP magazine?

  • @metalshaperJeep

    @metalshaperJeep

    2 жыл бұрын

    The chevy valve installation really opens up the head and allows it to make much more power. There has always been a lot of talk about the stroker motors and they do make good power. The 4.0 head is a good option if you have no skills or tools to make performance upgrades. I like the 258 head and by massaging it and installing a cam and increasing the compression ratio I can get more horsepower and torque than the stroker recipe. What you have to remember is there are people who make power by adding bolt on items, and then there are people like me who understand how a engine operates and find ways to improve and make more power. More videos to come.
