Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I am getting into the rear axle of the Jeep Scrambler. It is a stock Model 20 rear axle and I will show you how to take it apart so it can be cleaned and inspected.

That's a monster Arbor press. Never seen one that big. Thank you for these videos. I have 4 of these model 20s and have only done a 1 pc axle swap.

2.72! holy cow, never heard of such a thing! I'm a 5.38 guy myself, 4.30 would have my vote, but obviously that is up to the customer. Cheers from here in 3b land! Thanks Brian.

2.72's are my least favorite gear. You can really get some speed on the highway but hard to get out of your own way if you have anything in the bed or in tow.

Every time I watch the WW2 jeeps driving of the landing craft into the sea I think that salt water is going to be the end of that jeep, I guess they never lasted long in the war anyway

The life expectancy of the WW2 Jeep was only 90 days. That is why they made over 600,000 of them back in the day between Willys and Ford

My '82 Scrambler came with the 2.72's, when I bought it and fixed it up in HS I pulled out the I-6 and the 2.72's and went back in with a '85 GM 350 and some 4.10's - it was a beast offroad - didn't really need low range.

@@metalshaperJeep It worked AMAZING at the place I designed it to run - long, winding creek bed with soft sand and lots banks and washouts and water crossings....I would go up some pretty steep banks(sometimes backwards) that some of the guys with bigger trucks on 44's would have trouble with....I was on some budget-brand 33" AT's. Shortly after, the state closed that creek bed to motorized vehicles and there was no place locally to play offroad. Sold it to a mechanic for a few thousand bucks when it became obvious that I wouldn't be able to do 1-ton running gear and a full rollcage on my $14/hr budget WHILE making a payment on my Daily Driver truck....he took out the '85 V8 with a 4bbl and dropped-in an early'90's (pre-Vortec) 350, fully built Automatic, Atlas T-case, Currie high-pinion 9"' diffs, rollcage that fit INSIDE the factory Hard top and a 2nd cage in the bed for the passenger seat he had added-in...some badass tire carrier that would hold a 37" spare....because he put 37's on it with beadlocked wheels. Took him over two years, but was a really nice job - he even transplanted the ENTIRE gauge cluster out of the engine donor GM pick-up into the dash of the CJ.

Thank you for the informative video, I've never seen an AMC 20 in person. But I've always been curious as to what they are like. Great to learn something about then. Never would have thought of a jeep vehicle with a ratio lower than 3 those 2.72 gears are crazy!

The AMC 20 can easily be made into a very sturdy rear axle. I am going to show all the tips to make it a rock solid axle in future videos.

Working on my AMC 20 now, has the 2.72 - groan. So going with new 3.73 R&P and possibly the Eaton Detroit TrueTrac. Brian, any thoughts on good makers of the R&P?

if you are replacing the axels with 1 piece did you really need to pull the hub? bcouldn't you just remove the baking plate nuts ,then you can flip the brake drum around and use it as a puller and remove the entire axle assembly ,baking plates, bearings and all?

Gordon, I only make FC parts for projects in the shop that I am working on. Too many problems with people who lack the tools and skills to install them correctly. Nothing but trouble selling perfect panels that people screw up and then start complaining.

@@metalshaperJeep My Jeep I bought from my brother who bought it brand new! He owned it for 8 years before I bought it and he’s never had work done to it! 25 years ago I put one piece axles in it and there was not a inner seal and I thought something was wrong! So I bought a Chilton’s manual and found out some do and some don’t! This is what it says from my book. Some axles have a inner oil seal fitted in the axle shaft housing,Inboard of the Bearing; some do not. If your axles does not have one don’t install one when replacing the bearing! Axles with an inner seal rely on chassis lube for bearing lubrication and must be preluded prior to installation. Axles without a inner seal rely on differential oil to lubricate the bearing. My axle housing has no place for a seal to set against smooth as a baby’s butt! I just don’t understand why some do and some don’t and what the reason is for it! I’ve never talked to anyone else who has never not had a seal! Sorry it’s so long! Thank you Brian! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

They put that gear set in for fuel economy in the 80's and they didn't go over to well with real Jeep guys and girls.
