Building a 10,000 RPM Jeep 4.0 - Street and Off-road cylinder heads

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Rick Mudge was the engineer in charge of airflow development for AMC/JEEP/ CHRYSLER engineering from 1976 to 2001 and developed the 4.0L jeep cylinder heads intake and exhaust manifolds through those years.
Rick developed a 4.0L JEEP engine for drag racing in the NHRA Competition Eliminator class. His engine set the ¼ mile national record in 1996 at an 8.60ET/ with the best speed of 150.90 MPH spinning 9000 RPM through the traps. This engine was built with a combination of stock and heavily modified production and racing parts. Through this multi-part series, we’ll learn who Rick is, his work, and his formula for building a 10,000 RPM 4-liter Jeep.
I’ll warn you that the audio quality is only as good as Rick’s flip phone would allow, this wasn’t recorded in a studio, and I’ve done the best I could to clean up and mask the poor-quality recording.
In this episode, Rick tells us what to look for in a street and offroad cylinder head, port modifications, and flow considerations.

That side by side image of the heads is something I created a few years ago! That's awesome to see it in a performance video about the 4.0L!

I really appreciate this content! Still trying to process all the info. Thank you! I’d love to see someone demonstrate these mods

Perhaps not full builds but rather a video demonstration of the techniques and concepts regarding the cylinder head the gentleman is talking about. Still photos are useful but seeing it pointed out on an actual head might help me be more confident when trying some of these techniques and concepts myself . I wish I had a cylinder head sitting in front of me while I watch.

Ported and polished head with LS valves made a bigger difference on my stroker than the stroker itself did with a stock head over a stock 4.0. Even the exhaust note was twice as loud.

NGL, I thought this was a video about someone who developed a head for the 4.0L with the intake and exhaust on opposite sides 😐

If you listen to the series, you'd hear why AMC/Jeep/Chrysler didn't build a crossflow head. There are videos of the crossflow Oestaberta Jeep head here as well.

Is this an endorsement of using epoxy in the intake ports? Also, gotta say the casting consistency of the 94 seems really decent. There are some ports on the intakes that have potrusions into them that aren't there on the others. Was that for a reason? Wanting to say 2 and 5 for some reason.

You can use epoxy, but you better sink a few pins in the port to hold the epoxy. Are you talking about the head bolt protrusions?

@@amxj no, in the sides of the bowls. At least on my 94 head.

The guys that clean out the ports at the foundry probably just missed the flashing from the casting process, knock the flashing out using a grinder and a fine carbide bit. No big deal just needs additional clean up in ports.
