Disney spelled out their philosophy with this line, kill the past. They did, literally. Mark Hammill got paid sure, but he didn't agree with the way his character was written. A majority of fans who grew up with that character were turned off too.

Star Wars was doomed the very second disney bought it. It will never return in its current owners' hands, and maybe not even in the next ones'. Dark Forces I & II is Star Wars, MotS can be intriguing if remade, Outcast is okay, and Academy is bearable.

Nah, The Last Jedi was excellent, a deconstruction of the jedi much in the vein of KOTOR 2, treading new ground for the movies. Rise of Skywalker was actually bad, throwing away every good development of TLJ because of people's negative reaction to it, resulting in a movie that was satisfactory to no one. The Luke in the Jedi Outcast series is profoundly uninteresting if you ask me, though I do wish they hadn't axed Kyle katarn

This game has a heart and soul. As you said at the end: it's made by people who love Star Wars and its audience, people who knew how to pay tribute to Kyle Katarn's previous adventures while creating new ones. I love the Expanded Universe and Kyle is one of my favorite characters. Seeing him evolve through all these games is great and feels very rewarding. I'm looking forward to your video about Jedi Academy, which is one of the most important games of my childhood, it meant a lot to me back then. I knew Jedi Outcast after playing Jedi Academy and enjoyed it a lot, but back then Jedi Academy felt to me like the ultimate Jedi fantasy. Great video, as always! A lot of memories unlocked.

The whole Kyber/Kaiburr crytal being the main/sole lightsaber crystal of the Jedi Order, pre-clone wars, is a TCW thing. So when I saw the reference to YJK series, I was positively surprised, that someone else would point it out. Lowbacca, a nephew of Chewbacca, used a crystal from a holo-projector of sorts, if I recall correctly.

Tenel Ka used some flawed crystals she found in a geyser from what I remember. Because of that her lightsaber shorted out during training with Jacen and she lost her arm. Lightsabers was my favorite novel from the YJK series, both because Tenel Ka is my favorite EU character and because it was where she and Jacen finally admitted their feelings for one another. I'm still not happy that Jacen got turned into a Sith Lord after all of the character growth and deepened understanding of the Force he went through. They even retconned Vergere into being a Sith to make the mental gymnastics work. Oh well. Not every author has the same vision I suppose.

Great video as always man. And what a game this is. This, Jedi Academy, Battlefront II (2005), KOTOR, and Lego Star Wars TCS are by far my favorite Star Wars video games that I've played. Phenomenal lightsaber combat, expansive force abilities, and decent FPS mechanics aside, I think Jedi Outcast does a great job providing a character arc for Kyle that's so satisfying to watch unfold. Not just in the overall story but in little bits of dialogue. When his father says may the force be with you, Kyle brushes it off by saying "It hasn't been with me so far." However, way later into the game when Kyle and Luke meet on the Doom Giver and Skywalker gives Katarn the same sentiment the Jedi Outcast says "Yeah. You too Luke." When he goes to Nar Shada and the Bar tender calls him a Jedi he says this badass line: "I'm no Jedi. Just a guy with a lightsaber and a few questions." But by the end of the game when given the option to return his saber, he decides to keep it and embrace hi gifts instead of shun them. It's a subtle but brilliant way to show how much Kyle has grown. Now I don't know if you'll ever play this game again for whatever reason, but I'd like to recommend some mods to you that enhance the game and make it far more accessible. I'll link them here. #1. OpenJO: A source port of Jedi Outcast SP that allows for a sweet of new features. This mod allows for Outcast to run better on modern hardware and you can even fixed the widescreen cinematics by putting this code "cg_fovAspectAdjust 1" into the command prompt (you can access this by pressing the tilde key and SHIFT at the same time). Choose whichever download build works for your PC. github.com/JACoders/OpenJK/releases/tag/latest #2. JK2MV: A source port of Jedi Outcast's MP that allows for a sweet of new features such as switching to different builds of the game to play on different servers. jkhub.org/files/file/3858-jk2mv/ NOTE: For setting up the first two, I recommend watching this video from the JKHub KZread channel: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aX93m7WdZsvfhqQ.html #3. Expanded Menu: A mod for Jedi Outcast that provides a new menu UI and options in the data pad menu that allow you to fidle with FOV, spawning NPC's and items, and even changing the music of the level. It also provides a level select so you can choose what mission you want at any time. Just drag the files (after you unzip them of course) and drag it into the Gamedata/Base folder of JO. www.moddb.com/mods/jedi-outcast-expanded-menu #4. Widescreen Crosshair Mod: No more stretched crosshairs when playing in 16:9 or 16:10. Just unzip the files, choose which aspect ratio crosshair you want, rename it so it has the letter Z before it (this is for working with the Expanded Menu mod) and drag it into the GameData/Base folder of JO. www.moddb.com/mods/widescreen-crosshair-169 Once again, great retrospective of one of my favorite Star Wars games.

I love your retrospectives and I have enjoyed watching you go through all of them. It's a special thing to see someone go through one of your favourite games with fresh eyes. What I do wonder though, because I watched the whole video through and it wasn't clear... did you realize that there are multiple lightsaber stances with different animations during your first run? Because you were playing in the default (yellow) stance for the whole game while ignoring fast (blue) and strong (red). That's kinda skipping over a huge part of the lightsaber combat mechanícs of the game. At least Jedi Academy is a bit more explicit about that. Looking forward to that video as well!

There is something special about this game that no other Star Wars game has ever beaten, and that's how dead-on accurate they nailed the feeling of the original trilogy, I've never been more immersed in Star Wars than I am with this game. Honestly this game also reminds me a lot of Max Payne (or Half-Life and other shooters of the era), third person levels with secrets and powers to slow down time, a man on a mission with nothing to lose after losing his woman. I really do miss this era of action games, and the simpler era of Star Wars stories.

I remember back in the day in the 2000s when I was a teenager in highschool. When I come home from school and finished my homework I would quickly start up Jedi Outcast on my PC. Which was always something I looked forward to playing every night. I lived in a small country town with no Internet. But for a couple years we finally had access to the Internet and I of course took full advantage of it and played Jedi Outcast Multiplayer and that was soo much fun! That was actually the first time I ever played online multiplayer on anything and man was that an amazing first time! We had saber only arenas and free for alls . We even had the option to challenge each other to 1 v 1 EPIC lightsaber duels! There was actually this one player who modded his Lando Avatar into having an AWESOME Double Bladed Lightsaber somehow. Which was so unique and kind of unfair because he was the only player with a double Bladed Lightsaber because in Jedi Outcast Multiplayer everyone only had one Bladed Lightsabers. To this day I still have my PC copy of Jedi Outcast and I would love to find some people to multiplayer it with! Because no offense to the AI controled Avatars but nothing beats playing with and against an actual player online on that game.

The first five levels make you feel like a badass commando, you become a nigh invincible warrior, and then ... you're shoved into a completely hostile environment lol It's simultaneously wide-open yet claustrophobic, it tests your new abilities to their limits, and you're getting shot at by unblockable blasters you've never seen before. The level of immersion in 1st person and the fluid changing music, made you feel like you were in a movie. It was also one of the earliest games to build a huge and dedicated modding community on the internet, which I participated in, designing a few maps of my own, which was so much fun. On a sentimental level, this is my favorite video game ever. I'm glad you had a great time playing it. Thanks for the excellent video.

I remember how there were whole Roleplayer guilds, with their own private maps, that even clashed with each other. For something that was really built as an Arena Shooter, the amount of depth and imagination that the players poured into the tools given was incredible. And is just one of a dozen examples of how the love for the franchise could grow organically when nourished.

Another great retrospective! It's funny, but I was late to playing this game too. I played DF1 and 2 as a kid, but I didn't play this till several years after it's release, so it was cool to see your perspective on it being shaped very similarly. It's such a solid and fun game, but like you mentioned, I agree that DF2 is a bit more over the top, which is something that I loved about that game. If only the saber combat in DF2 was as smooth as this! Keep up the great content dude!

A fun fact about the Reborn enemies. Their colors aren't just randomized textures, each Reborn variant has different difficulty levels coded into them. Looking into the game files and using the dev console on the PC version of the game you can spawn Reborn enemies using "npc spawn *npc name*" and their names are as follows: - Blue hoodie variant (reborn_acrobat) which is the basic weakest Reborn that relies solely on acrobatics as a fighting style with minimal saber and force powers combat (a Jedi Padawan in power level) - Orange hoodie variant (reborn) which are more balanced and kinda incorporate a little bit of everything without any expertise on anything (A basic Jedi in power level) - Green hoodie variant (reborn_fencer) which rely more on saber combat than on force powers (A Jedi with expertise in saber combat in power level) - Red hoodie variant (reborn_boss) which rely way more on force powers than saber combat but they can hit hard especially thanks to their red lightsaber "stance" which follows a slow but powerful pattern of attacks compared to the yellow (medium) or blue (light) stances (which you also unlock on Kyle as the game progresses) (they're the closest to a Jedi Knight in power level but they're not quite there yet) (I didn't include the invisible dudes from later on in the game as the armor they wear acts like a pseudo cheat code in terms of enemies) I'm new to the channel and I heard you say the midichlorian part and thought it was worth mentioning just to point out how Raven as developers really paid attention to details when creating this masterpiece. Sorry for the long comment I really don't know how to keep it short and you earned my sub for this video dude, amazing work!

When this game was released, I had been enjoying UT99 and Quake 3 for about 2yrs... whilst I love those games, I needed something fresh. Jedi Outcast had such a robust lightsaber combat system, along with decent bots and LAN support, it immediately became a staple multiplayer game for my bro and I. Sure, Jedi Academy had dual wielding and double bladed lightsabers, but the single lightsaber with three different stances just plays so well already.

Evan, another stellar review and solid walkthrough on how to mod the game as usual. JEDI OUTCAST imho is one of the best game to flesh out the Expanded Universe lore, from characters, locations, ships, etc. It blends itself perfectly in what was at the time, the Star Wars canon. Another series that does that perfectly is definitely the X-Wing series.

I can't believe the quality of the content you make and have much less follower than you should have. As other folks have said, I can't wait for you to finish Jedi Academy, also my personal favorite, and that's coming for a person that was wanting to play this game for years but never could for a long time, but when I played Jedi Academy, it really was everything a SW fan could ask for. Keep it strong man, May the Force and the algorithm be with you always ❤✨👌

On the point of mining saber crystals, I had never considered it before but I do find it a bit odd that the Imperial Remnant would be doing it. In Legends it was possible to fabricate a synthetic saber crystal if no suitable real crystal is at hand. Darth Maul's saber staff used a pair of synthetic crystals as it was by necessity largely a Sith practice in the Republic era due to the Jedi controlling the supply of suitable crystals (though this conflicts with other Legends material which shows that virtually any gem stone would work, as you said) and this was reversed when Luke created a green synthetic crystal for his saber before ROTJ due to the Empire controlling the crystal supply. While creating a synthetic crystal was time consuming as the user needed to infuse the Force into it, the same process applies to genuine crystals, even ones as powerful as the Kaiburr crystal (which was originally an extremely powerful Force amplifying crystal, shards of which were extremely rare but made the best crystals. This was retconned pre Disney with the introduction of Kyber crystals at soms point while the Kaiburr crystal dates back to the very first Legends book). By all logic in Legends, the Remnant should have been using synthetic crystals but I guess the fledling New Republic couldn't lock down supply like its predecessors and novels like I, Jedi showing any gem will work even if it could malfunction in extreme circumstances makes such an idea harder to believe anyway

  • @evprince

    @evprince

Well as you said, fabricating a synthetic crystal the way Luke and Maul did required Force infusion, and that takes both time and a Force user. Though they had Desaan and others, the goal was to mass produce thousands of Lightsabers very quickly. Although Luke does also say here that the crystals themselves were being infused with the Force via the Valley so. It's all a bit of a stretch tbh.

20:26 Fun thing, because of loading limitations, the game actually drops you directly in the upper area in the Gamecube version, and there is a wall blocking it off from the lower valley, meaning the turret there CANNOT be used to take out the AT-ST in the lower valley, meaning you have to run past two of the damned things.

I had a challenge finding a mostly compatible PC for this game at its initial release. Likewise the same issues arise with release of Star Wars KOTOR in 2003. Eventually I did find a mostly compatible setup with a laptop. Exterior space cutscenes were a step up. I did miss the live action ones from Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. The in-game interiors were jaw dropping to me way back then. Some references did not connect with me. Valley of the Jedi yes, blue milk yep, the bantha herder yeah, but the monkey lizard not so much. The character models were impressive- most impressive. The weapons were sometimes familiar and other times not so much. Various character cameos were fun. Revisiting familiar named locations was interesting. Certain species were familiar but it would be years before I know more about the species of the bad grammar bartender. I did read several EU during the years surrounding this game’s release. Mainly the Jedi Academy ones featuring the Yavin 4 locations. Of course several characters made up the core cast of the Jedi Academy books carry over to every Star Wars book series until the Legends branding by Disney. Kyle and/or Jan were present in some of the EU novels. Trying to figure out how the games fit with the EU timeline was a challenge. Similarly other Star Wars games from this period also had some foundational elements with the EU.

@@evprince yes one of the longer book series was Star Wars: New Jedi Order. I found one book at the library - the cover art intrigued me. A new alien species forcing old enemies to cooperate to defeat them. Seeing both the original trilogy characters working with the new characters of the EU. my early experience with Dathomir came from Tenel Ka Djo, heir to Hapes Consortium and daughter of two worlds. Her mother was of Dathomir and her fathers was of Hapes. Her first attempt at construction of a lightsaber was a risky combination that broke apart in a duel with Jacen Solo. I remember thinking how many people lose a hand, an arm even because of accidents with a lightsaber. Luke lost a hand in his first duel with Darth Vader. Anakin Skywalker lost part of arm and a hand in a duel with Count Dooku. A later fight between Kenobi and Anakin saw the latter lose more limbs. So we saw how he became more machine than man - twisted from a certain point of view. Anyhow the lightsaber being built from proper and stable parts is vital. As Kenobi once said this weapon is your life. There’s still multiple EU entries I missed over the years. The first however was called Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, which was originally published between the releases of A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Partially written bc of doubts about the first film’s financial success and partially to develop the relationship of the characters following the first film.

I feel like the 2nd student Kyle saw turn to the Dark Side was Gantoris. Barkiss's whole evil thing didn't happen until 5 years after Jedi Outcast and only Luke knew Barkiss was a dark side spy. While Gantoris did turn evil due to Exar Kun and was the first student to die. Also, Artusian crystals weren't being used for Lightsabers. They were used in conjunction with the Valleys power to give the Reborn their Force Powers, probably acting as retainers of power.

❤ this one is my all-time favorite game! This was my childhood! This was hundreds of hours of fun! I think the best part was the huge modding community for both jka and jko! What's even crazier is the amount of mods still in development for these games! There is so many I wish I still had time to just sit and play them all again! One of the best things to do was go to jk3 files everyday to see what new mods had been added! Such a fun game! It truly is a Gem of a game! You for sure need to check out Galatic legacy mod, Movies Duels, and movie battles! Those mods bring so much content together in different ways, it's way worth a look! Cheers thanks for this video you do such a great job getting awesome lore added in that I had no idea existed! Awesome work can't wait to hear JkAs 😊

Damn, so that what happened to Havet Storm. He was the main character on a book I read so very long ago. The book was one of those choose your own adventures, you flip to the pages on the results on what choices you make. Making you partly the author of your own story. I remembered him with a special toy droid he inherited which hid a lightsaber disguised as one of it's innards parts so he could hide it among Imperial check points. I never knew what happened to him, I think he was mentioned in the Jedi Academy trilogy way back.
