🌷Jean Dodali by S. Hismans (Woodblock Print Repro, New Colours, Handmade; Tarot Sheet Revival, 2019

30 SEPT 2019 -- Otherwise known as Tarot de Jean Dodal (Iean Dodal) circa early 1700s originated in Lyon, France, produced for export to Italy. Jean Dodal was a master card maker of one of the most important pack of cards in the history of playing cards which originated in Northern Italy called tarocchi, or in France, tarot. Dodal's is one of the earliest example of a Type I "Tarot de Marseille". Here, it is presented in one of the most accurate woodblock print reproduction - if not *the only* woodblock print reproduction - to date, by Sullivan Hismans, in new colours of his own choosing, at my request. Sullivan's original version would have been one of the most accurate reproduction available at the time of this video, due to the use of his own original hand-carved woodblock(s) to print his reproductions with. He sourced his Jean Dodali images from two separate collections:
(1) Bibliothèque Nationale de France
(2) The British Museum.

Hello! I actually really hoped to be able to also get his printed version but I had to draw the line somewhere! :) Yes these independently created cards by Sullivan and some others like Pablo Robledo are some of the most beautiful I found :) I hope you can get yours and will enjoy them as much as I have!

So, the Knights and the Page who is using his Baton as a walking stick are the only cards marked "For Export"? Do you think that was because they are the only members of the court who seem to be traveling?

I almost bought the "printed" version of this, but it's expensive and I don't know if it's "worth it". I'm still sitting on it. Thanks for sharing the HAND MADE version WOW. I love that you chose those colors and wonder if he ran through with you the "final" shades.

Hey Casper. From what I understand, he hand carved the woodblock himself, and then used that to print, just how it was done a few hundred years ago. His company name "Tarot Sheet Revival" I believe reflects his aim to revive the old practice. As you probably know, Sullivan Hismans started with recreating the Budapest Tarot sheet this way, based on the tarot sheet that is currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. Thus the name "Budapest Tarot" for his reproduction of it. I have seen Robert M Place reproduced the same images (I think) using computer graphic and called it something else. Robert Place's version retailed at US $600 for a whole set, US $250 for majors only. (For perspective, Flornoy's hand stencilled set was about US $50 ish...). From my understanding, even computer generated images produced in small batches can increase the average prices, because of economy of scale and all that. So you can imagine if you have to count the time that you carved the woodblocks first.... OK here endeth my class LOL

..... and no he did not run through with me any of the colours or shades :) I basically said, you go crazy do what you want :P I just don't want the original six colours. I am bored with them, and I am over historical comparisons (for myself). That is so 2017 (for ME!!) LOL

These cards are hand drawn and cut so not made using modern "card stock" but the traditional way using papers pasted together and pressed. Thanks for watching!
