🌷 In Memoriam: Il Meneghello’s Boxes + Tarocco Soprafino, Tarot de Besancon, Tarocco di Marsiglia

10 MAY 2021 --- Three older, vintage, handmade one of a kind boxes by Osvaldo Menegazzi of Il Meneghello. The Maestro has since retired (In 2017?) and Il Meneghello rebranded under its new management headed by his step daughter Christina Dorsini. It has since also relocated from its former magical location to be consistent with its new business model, moving from the man, the maestro, to the brand itself. This is a closer look at some of the historical facsimile collection which I still have in the house (I am liquidating my collection in stages. These will be the last to go). Specifically the boxes. I have gone through the cards themselves a few years ago. Feel free to check out my historical facsimile playlist if you are more interested in those.
NOTE
The Hanged man in Swiss tarot, and Besancon tarot, often depicted wearing an outfit which belong to a much later period compared to other decks published earlier such as those we calle Tarot de Marseille. Although a lot of these Swiss and Besancon tarot dated back to the 1800s (or even the 1700s), my observation suggests that the style of the clothing of the Hanged Man is from several centuries earlier. This is often the case with other decks too, that the outfit depicted in the images are often from several hundred years earlier than when a deck was published.

In the next few months I will be focusing my channel's content to support this liquidation. This may be showing copies that are leaving my collection, or maybe some of my harder to find editions, as a way of documenting them.
Liquidation phase 1 completed. Due to time constraints liquidation phase 2 will be later in 2021 or next year 2022.
UPDATE 20 AUG 2021
PHASE 2 is now done. Thank you everyone.
Phase 3 is projected to be in 2022. But I will not make any promises.
Because of the nature of my collection and how I have decided to progress my liquidation towards a "deeper" layer my tarot collection with each phase, the gap between the space I am operating in as a seller and the spaces in which those looking to buy are coming from, felt increasingly larger. This appears to have resulted in an ever increasing mental taxation for me. The law of diminishing returns is ever looming when seen from this perspective. So I might decide next year (or this year) that at this point, it is cheaper for me, both financially and mentally, to donate the rest to a local charity shop instead. While what I consider to be the crown of my collection will be revisited when I turned 60.
(Please note that "bargain working decks" are not, and will never be, part of my liquidation efforts. This is because boxes of those have all been given away and donated to charity. Shipping from New Zealand is AT LEAST approximately USD $50. I'll let you do the math. I will also not give away internationally anymore. Even if you pay full costs of shipping, each of them take a fair bit of my time, and they do add up).

I had forgotten that I put these on a list to watch later! I’m so glad I went back to check them out. How exquisite, Anneke. Such a treat and a total inspiration as an artist who works with printing!

I wish Christina Dorsini would make it part of her project to document the Maestro’s way of working rather than for publicity purposes only......

From what I heard, he has, a few years ago. In his Tarocchi Expo Milano 2015 you can see some of the cards were signed by Christina Dorsini. I think by 2017 she took over completely. My memory is a bit hazy it has been awhile. If you are curious about how the shop used to look, check out Arnell Ando's website. It looks like a piece of Hogwarts! Under the new management they have rebranded and looks more like the Dior or Prada of tarot. Which arguably, they are! The Maestro was still painting the Mitelli deck in 2018 so I am not sure what he is doing these days. But, they have gone online, so making shopping a lot easier! The last time I bought things from them it was emailing back and forth!

But my question the Meneghello is not making any more special editions or decks by hand ? Who is doing it now for him ? And did he made all the cards by hand ? Not in a printer ? Please explain to me so I can understand better,

I dont know. Please contact the manager of Il Meneghello, the Maestro's step daughter Christina Dorsini to ask your questions. We do not believe they are handmade anymore. But I am not their representative so, I wont be doing their selling for them. I used to do this as a hobby and for my love of Maestro Osvaldo Menegazzi, who is now gone. Good luck with your search.

Note that all of these are older production of Il Meneghello. The current production is not as well crafted from what I heard. They have lost the Maestro effectively as soon as his step daughter retired him and relocate the shop a few years ago. But he recently passed away in Dec 2021. The transition is complete for Il Meneghello into becoming a commercial boutique tarot producer, instead of an artisan one. Good luck with finding vintage ones in the secondary market!

@@mrsmith4848 Il Meneghello is the brand. It rebranded although keeping the brand name, when it relocated under a new management a few years ago. The Maestro was reduced to a mascot. You can see the lost of sparkle in his eyes. Osvaldo Menegazzi himself passed away about four years after. For a few years now, their tarot has not been handmade anymore.
