Jazz Violin Bowing Lesson, aka How to Groove w/ the bow on violin & cello. Watch the previous lesson "Extended Rhythmic Techniques for Violin & Cello" here: • Extended Rhythmic Tech...
This video discussed a two step process to play fast syncopated lines with the bow, i.e.
1) internalizing subdivisions with the bow (also sometimes referred to as "strum bowing")
2) optimizing your bowing to play syncopated melodies with more accuracy at faster tempos.
To optimize your bowings beyond chopping or strum bow, consider the following:
a) use less bow
b) leave your bow on the string
c) use more hooks and slurs (change the bow less)
d) begin the bow stroke with a consonant attack
e) maintain a mezzo piano feeling in your violin bowing arm
f) make a habit of practicing improvising your bowings to various etudes or scale patterns.
All of this will help teach you how to improve bowing technique on violin.

Great vid, Chris! So glad to see that you're teaching this fundamental concept of playing all the subdivisions with a continuous down/up strumming motion. I call this approach Strum Bowing. I think it's the key to grooving on strings.

Thanks Tracy! I published the precursor to this video in 2015 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/poGWp9upn9HKis4.html). I find that this fundamental concept is important as one part of a multi-pronged approach to rethinking the bow arm. and wanted to update w this video to reflect the supplements to that concept per the description in this video i.e. after internalizing subdivisions with the bow, further optimize bowings by the following: " a) use less bow b) leave bow on the string c) use more hooks and slurs (change the bow less) d) begin the bow stroke with a consonant attack e) maintain a mezzo piano feeling in bow arm f) make a habit of practicing improvising bowings to various etudes or scale patterns." Appreciate the comment. keep up the great work!

Thank you for this video! Rhythm has always been my biggest weakness. Since I started subdividing, my rhythm has improved a lot, it got more accurate. In the description of the video you talk about working this way with scales and patterns. Haven’t tried that yet. I will! Thanks!!! 🙏🏻

Hi Christian, thanks for the video. I have a question about an amplifier for my acoustic violin. I do not know which one to buy, I've seen that there are digital or analog, but I do not know which one will work best for me. Is there an amplifier that you can recommend me?

Leonardo Ponce yes I recommend any acoustic amplifier. Such as the fishman loudbox or AER. Electricviolinshop is an excellent resource. They have their phone number at their website and if you call them they can help you. Tell them I sent you
