I'm a Cellist and I'm going to try and get started on these! I learned this from Greg Byers but your breakdown of each step is awesome! Thanks Christian
This is the very first glimpse I am getting (trained as a very traditional non-creative string player). Although it may be a little late in my life, it gives me pleasure to glance inside this creative, magic box realizing some of the secrets that made me always wonder "How on earth do they do this." One way or other I will embed some of your videos on our website (a string instrument shop in Australia, called Animato Strings).

Thanks Dietrich! It's never too late...:) Sory i missed you last August in Oz- hopefully see you there next time. Feel free to pm me at chris@christianhowes.com if you'd like to connect. thank you.
The important take away from this video is this: You need to be able to start from any note of a scale (i.e. the chord you're playing over) and be able to proceed up or down from that point of the scale. So in effect you're learning or internalizing all the different modes within that scale.
Fantastic..... when you mention modes you are the real deal.

I studied violin for 5 years when I was young playing baroque and classic music...then I studied art, left the violin and became a painter...I've 65 years and some times ago I polished off my 100 years old german violin and I realized that I'm even able to play!!! But I never played jazz and it's one of my dreams to improvise blues and jazz. Maybe that with the your lessons I'll fulfill it....even on a basic level.

Being a late returner (after a 44 years rest!) I want to be a lot freer than I was able to be as a teenager. I find your tips very encouraging.
I always loved practicing sequences or motifs on the piano throughout melodic minor and diminished scales. It was very beneficial melodically and technically! It’s so much more difficult on the violin in my opinion. But for those willing to put in the work, you won't regret it.

Thanks for sharing....so simple to change it up and yet I can see myself gaining so much more. Thanks for breaking it down too! I've been playing mariachi music for most of my life and want to branch out. This would be a great tool for me. Many times ...we have to play songs on the fly and improvising is essential. I can see myself addings some much more interesting fillins.

Wow! Totally KILLING it in that intro and outro man. Systematic approaches to practicing scales and arps are super helpful to me. One question for you- do you have a systematic approach for applying bowing to each of these steps, or just to your scale/arp/pattern practice in general? I notice you tend to stick to one bow stroke all the way up and one all the way down your scales (including extended range). For patterns you seem to do one bow per pattern. Naturally practicing alternate bowing (typical up down) should be one to apply... but are there any other bowing methods you find pretty applicable to playing scales/shapes/arps/patterns etc. on the violin for facility within the improv/jazz idiom?
@ChristianHowesViolin
9 жыл бұрын
Brandon Dove In short, I recommend improvising the bowings during exercises, so that you can achieve the same sound with almost any bowing pattern.
Thank you. My father says practice scales if I want to be good, but why? how? how does a scale apply? I learn scales best when I learn a new tune because I need to know the scale to play the tune which makes strong connections in the brain and to the fingers. But having a more engaging way and a way to think about scales is very helpful.

Nicholas Montgomery with my little experience , practicing scales are just to remember where to put your finger exactly and the spaces between each notes or fingers , so it would be easily played then . Some people like to practice on examples because scales aren't really melodic and fun to play all the time , but I had a problem with my fourth finger and I had to practice on the scale for some time Sorry for my bad english hope you had the idea
very nice! Is there any recommendation for the bow as well?
@ChristianHowesViolin
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I have many recommendations for the bow arm In short 1) practice improvising the bow direction 2) When improvising, use less bow changes and keep the bow on the string. FOr access to my full library and to schedule a free lesson, see here: christianhowes.com/csa/

Yes- it's called "Song for my Daughter" from my album by the same name. Recorded in early 2001 or so... thanks for asking!
Great video Christian , I wonder what kind of pickup do you use for your violin?
@ChristianHowesViolin

Thanks! I actually use a Yamaha VNP-1 but they quit making these. I recommend calling ElectricVIolinShop to get the latest and greatest. Their phone support is really amazing- they'll answer all questions right there on the phone and they know whats up. their # is on their website. You can spend anywhere between $175-400 to get a decent pickup IMHO.

hi Christian, my email is cellojuice@gmail.com I'd love to have the next part when you can send it!
Chris at 2:35 don't you mean D harmonic minor and not melodic minor?
Ok but where to begin? Do you do step one with all keys then step 2? Or all steps in one key then to the next? Are there some especially important keys to focus on? I just feel like doing what you said in all keys would take practicing for 8 hours a day! And do you do major, minor, diminished, harmonic minor--??? I'm overwhelmed!
@ChristianHowesViolin
8 жыл бұрын
+Klartunz Klar - I recommend a couple options: 1) pick one kind of scale and practice it in a few keys each day 2) pick one key and practice a few kinds of scales in that key each day 3) Base your choice on the repertoire you're working on for upcoming recordings, performances, or lessons. Determine one or two problem spots in a given tune and focus on those.
That intro song is incredible what is it?

K I don't understand, you can't go any lower than your root in a scale right? So confused thank you for your help
@ChristianHowesViolin

+Kai E you can start the scale from any note in the scale. Not just the root. After you learn the scale from the root, my suggestion is to learn the scale more fully by starting it from every note.
@koolelan

Hi Christian..I'm thinking a person could start with a C scale, visualizing each white key on the piano while playing your violin. It'll remind you where you are in the sequence without any black keys involved, and it helps a person learn the series of modes from Major to Locrian.
