I personally think Nas is a better MC that Jay, Illmatic is better than anything Jay Z has in his catalog and at that point in time Nas won the battle BUT in the end Jay Z won the war. Nas started cranking out some garbage albums like Nastradamus while Jay transformed himself, putting out the earcandy like Blueprint III while at the same time creating lyrical juggernauts like the Black Album. I always thought Nasir never tried hard enough, he always kept it real but I think Life is Good was the best he could do right now- tank is empty for Esco.....same thing goes for Hov. Time for these guys to step aside and see what the next generation can do for hip hop.

nah illmatic is definitely one of the greatest albums of all time, but what I meant was that Reasonable Doubt is as much a classic as Illmatic....I personally prefer Reasonable Doubt, I even prefer It Was Written over Illmatic....But Illmatic definitely defined the 90s sound of Hip Hop

By far the greatest rap beef of all time.

Nas's first album is a classic, top 5 in hip hop. Jay was good and production was sick on his Trax. But that's like comparing movies like Independence Day with high paid special effects to Quentin Tarantino's dialogue in Jackie Brown. one is $$ bought lights , other is real skill.
