bkkhatyai I know it's been over a year since you posted this comment, but I just want to say that when I was there watching the game in a sushi bar in San Francisco, I felt hope. I saw tears of joy from the waitresses and the sushi chefs hugging each other and wiping their tears. They were able to witness their national team going to the womens world cup final for the first time and they were able to find something to smile about in one of the worst disasters in Japan in that same year. Being Japanese-American I felt very proud of how well Japan and the USA played in the final, because no matter what, both teams fought with heart and it showed.

While it took a miraculous goal from Sawa very, very close to the final whistle to equalize against the USA and get to the penalty shootout, nobody can take the WC victory from Japan or say they didn't deserve it. They beat Germany at home (the Germans were dominating everybody at the time), then Sweden, and then the USA. That's what I call doing it the hard way! They didn't have nearly as good a team in 2015 but thanks to the brackets didn't have to play top competition until the final. The biggest difference is that the USA has learned from Japan and has gotten much more technical and sophisticated (much better ball possession) instead of just the simplistic "shoot forward and let Wambach head the ball in".

This is well said. The 2015 team was still really good, but the biggest difference is that they had the best player in the world in Sawa in 2011 (and Miyama was probably one of the 10 best players in the world and perhaps the very best at putting dangerous balls into the box, especially on set pieces), and she was past her prime by 2015 at age 36.

Kind of feel bad for the Swedish team. They got beaten by the Dutch team in the semi-final for the current World Cup too. But joy to see them beat the English Lionesses for Bronze. Better than 2nd or 4th place in any tournament.
