The Japanese version of “Contra Hard Corps” is much more forgiving in the difficulty. You have a health bar, and can take multiple hits before dying. Opposed to a one hit death 💀 in the us release. It’s far more playable 👍🏻

You sure can.. quick tip: switch the console to Japanese. launch contra. Create a save state at the title screen. (You will see the logo is no longer in English) switch the console back to English, then start your gameplay. Load your Japan save state now located in the American save slot!! You now have the ability to play the better version without constant switching of the language .. far less frustrating than single hit deaths..🤘🏼

A bit of trivia for ya. We did get that smaller Japanese 6-button controller variation here in the US. It was sold as a Sega Club exclusive and marketed for smaller hands. Sega Club released a bunch of games aimed at toddlers and such. Gems like Ecco Jr.

Please compare the Retro-bit Genesis Controller to the one that came with MegaDrive Mini.

@@jaym8189 i bought the *asian* megadrive with the 2 6-button controllers. I also bought a 6-button retro bit controller, i ALSO have an original 1990's 6-button controller to compare them too. the retro bit ones are a 1:1 exact reproduction for size and style of the original. the ones that come with this new mini is about an 85% reproduction in size. if you didnt have an original controller you wouldnt really notice any difference (unless you used one recently) but the new smaller size has a nice look and feel to it.

@pachimonster a lot of times on both Amazon UK and Japan it only gives me one option, Global Expedited. It used to give me two options, one would be like 5-7 day shipping and be like half the cost of expedited, but Ive not been seeing standard shipping for a while. I order quite often from those Amazons.

Got the Asian coming as i think that has the best game line up and is the best design (same as JPN version)

I bought one of these for Christmas for myself, and made sure to grab the Japanese version. I've been really liking it so far! I have a 10 year old niece and shes liked playing the games together on the various mini systems, so that has been nice too. It's fun introducing her to games I played at her age. Might have to grab a Turbo Grafix mini next year too!

Now I want the Mega Drive Mini too. I'm glad they did the language and region change, just like the US version.

Hopefully you'll review the Asian MD Mini version next. I think it has the best exclusive games and best of the US and JP lineups (except no fighting games for some strange reason).

Japanese version every time! I've been a Japanese import gamer since 1989 and it's really the only way to get the full experience. This MD mini really is great, I'll be picking one up for sure.

I did indeed, everything from the PC Engine onwards. PAL gaming in the UK back in the 80's and 90's was dreadful, the only way to get the true experience was by importing. Plus all the Japanese consoles and games just looked way better!

Best version should be Asia version cause you get Musha, Snow Bro, Alien Soldier and Shinning Force 2

there are 3 versions as UK/AUS gets another megadrive version to match what was sold originally in the region

Nice Target Earth is on in English ! Lots of memories with that one. EGM had a secondary magazine released bi monthly called Super Gaming. They rated Target Earth's difficulty IMPOSSIBLE !!!

@@jamiegoguen7384 Ya Herzog Zwei was another great early Genesis title (the father of the whole RTS genre!)...i actually put these Genesis games on my hacked SNES Classic, so i won't be buying this unit, but i'm so glad this thing came out (and a hack is well underway!) since Nintendo stupidly didn't make enough units for the retro market...have fun with your new mini!

Why wouldn't they work with the US version? It sounds like its running the same basic operating system. Just the roms are slightly different.

I don't know if it has been tested anywhere, but I'd assume the 6-button pads would work on other models since the western units already have support for Retro-Bit third-party controllers which is something they officially stated.

The original 6 button controller was smaller than the original standard 3 button controller . I remember when I bought the 6 button controller (when my mom bought it lol) as a kid thinking it was weird that the controller was smaller.

Got mine today (US ver.) and I'm loving it!. My box came from Amazon in mint condition. The cardboard isn't really flimsy like the one you showed either. I got lucky I guess. Loving all the vids lately MLP!

Its weird, I wonder if some are just slightly thinner? Like the Japanese one seems just a bit more sturdy. Not a huge deal, but ive seen some people get boxes that were crushed.

Well, it's not for kids, and has very violent games. The best way to go is just to import from Southeast Asia, and that version is safe for kids.

Blue Kid Why? Obviously the Asian versions have hidden gems not on the others. Plus, the Asian versions have Alien Soldier, Sword of Vermillion and Shining Force II. The game List was set so it’s almost entirely 3-button friendly.

Why do some people say you get 3 versions of the games on the USA one if you change the region and you said it does not happen. One video I watched showed 3 versions on screen at once. Was he miss informed and thought the games looked different?

No, you can have access to different regions versions of the games that ship on it. But you don't get the exclusive games from other regions. Like the Korean/Asian release has Outrun 2019. You dont get Outrun on the Japanese or US version by changing the language to Korean.

I have the US version, but knowing this, makes me want to order the Japanese version. I was going to buy some 6 button controllers anyways, so I won't have to since it comes with 2 of them.

@@afriend9428 That's the rev 00 version, on later revisions they changed the sprites and colors. The first version with these characters is the one to look out for, pretty cool to see them in the game

Im curious was there ever a game releaseed that actuAlly used the mode button in the original release of the 6 button in its time.

Does the D-Pad feel different to the retrobit version? I have noticed that the retrobit 6 button version d-pad presses down on the middle whereas the original Sega d-pad didn’t press down from the middle so that all dicections are pressed at the same time.

The game list on the Asia region releases appears to be a better option to import because not only does that version have MUSHA and Revenge of Shinobi but also Alien Soldier and Shining Force II. You overlook that version in favor of the Japaneses version with dating and quiz show games in Japaneses that aren't on the Asia region version

Patrick Doyle Too bad only the U.S. version has ToeJam & Earl as well as Vectorman, but just because of the Alien Soldier and Musha alone tend to agree. At the same time the U.S. version often goes on sale for $40-$50 on Amazon.

I have the ASIA version coming my way. Less Japanese text heavy games, also both Mickey Mouse Games, Sonic 1 is on there and Strider, the only one with Shining Force II, Sword of Vermilion, Alien Soldier, Outrun 2019, and Puyo Puyo is on there.. really cool there are 3 versions to choose from. No Street Fighter on Asian version though.. among a few other differences.. if anyone out there is on the fence definitely check out the ASIA line up.

Fully agree with you that this version is superior to the western release. Musha Aleste alone makes it better, and 6 button pads are great! And Super Shinobi is better than Shinobi 3 in all categories except graphics.

Personally I think I'd get the Asia version with both Alien Soldier and MUSHA, two of my favorite games on the system that I played growing up. Plus you also get both Shining Force 1 & 2. I think you lose Street Fighter 2 CE but whatever, not attached since my version of choice was always the PC Engine. These mini consoles though... They'd be so much better with an online store to add more of the games you want. Lightening Force & Samurai Showdown man, c'mon!

Check Korean and Chinese please! I have high hopes to see Asian cover arts when Chinese is selected. There is most likely 0.000% chance they made Korean arts too byt still worth checking.

They usually do for me as well, but still can order. Sometimes on Japan and UK Amazon things will be restricted for a bit then it will be allowed to ship to the US.

When I was a kid I thought the Mega Drive was better than the Genesis. I just liked the Mega Drive name better than Genesis.😆

I've got a mod chipped Saturn with a Pound HDMI cable and an Action Replay, but I hope Sega releases a Saturn Mini within the next 5 years. Saturn emulation has come a long way, and the community have translated and are currently translating a ton of Japanese classics and putting out English patches. Sega could right their wrongs from 30 years ago by putting out a Saturn Mini that includes those community translations and puts the PlayStation Classic to shame. I can think of 40 great Saturn games off the top of my head that belong on a Saturn Mini, and none of them should be a problem for Sega to acquire as most of them are Sega properties.

You can buy the Retro-bit USB controllers. I think both their Genesis and Saturn ones work.

So, if I choose to buy the Japanese version because of the six button controller, and change the language to English, Street Fighter II SCE will be in English too, with boss names like USA version?

I too say get the Asian version over JP. Its cheaper, comes with the same hardware and have better games imo. Alien Storm and Sword of Vermilion has problems on hacked machines for some reason. But they run great on the Asian unit.

In my opinion... kinda no. Only because the Retro-Bit ones are bigger... the US style size. But quality wise, they seem bout the same.

In terms of gaming peripherals and gaming contents, us versions are always not on the same pedestal as the japanese version, if u are a hardcore gaming fan, always go for the japanese version in all the hardware and the software , u will be happier and more contented at the end of the day.

I see SEGA has not learned anything from the regional bias mistakes they made back in the 90's also can you play Yu Yu Hakusho in English? Without modding it of course? heh

I bought the japanese mega drive for one game alone...MUSHA....literally the best shooter in history (fanboy opinion :P). Considering it would cost hundreds of dollars getting the real cartridge and a working genesis, the 60 bux i spent was well worth it.

Pretty annoying they don’t include a usb power adapter. Every unboxing I watched they seemed to include one for the “KZread influencers” I don’t think it’ll work if I use a uk power adapter. Probably fry it?

All in all, the japanese version has some interesting titles but also titles that are unplayable if you cannot read Japanese. I would still consider the western versions the best, in particular the european version, which also has the best looks. The 6 button controller is also no big deal, you can find the official retrobit ones for 20 bucks each. There are really only a couple games that need it.

I ordered the one controller variant of the Japanese release just because the box art is the same as the original Japanese 1989 model... they were real clever with that marketing! Now I need to buy this one for more smaller Jp joypads... you got me SEGA.
