actually the sega genesis is an upgraded master system, back in the day you just needed the official adapter to play master system cartridges and and game cards.
I bought the US and Japanese versions. I can handle the sound lag and the sound quality is the best I've heard that isn't my Model 1 Genesis (it's funny that a 30 year old chip is still giving programmers heck to emulate). I'm happy to get some titles that have been either pricey to obtain or are obscure Japanese releases. My biggest hope is your last message. I bought the Minis, because I want to see more of Sega's back catalog available to own. I want every Super Scaler game out there. I want a Saturn Mini because I know one day the disc drive will fail on mine or the console will die. Sega's history needs to be preserved properly and I think us Sega fans want to make that a reality with our wallets so long as love and attention is given to the releases.

I know I am replying late, but you seem like the type of person who will have an opinion on this: the sound difference between original and mini is NOT consistent from game to game, right? Like... does it seem as though some games are missing some depth of sound, while others are much closer to being spot on? Sonic in his demo sounded pretty close.
Still working through this library. Thank you for sharing your thoughts so quickly! It's a good time to be a Sega fan.

Sega could make Saturn mini. You just need to get everyone to buy as many of Genesis mini and search for a lost source code of Saturn(yes Sega lost a source code of Saturn hence why they haven’t bothered to rerelease any Saturn games). I’ll make this simple: Get everyone to buy many of this and search for a lost source code of Saturn.
OH MY GOD!!! Thank you so much for testing out the Hyperkin controller on the Mega Drive Mini/Genesis Mini... and tell us that it doesn't work. So we don't have to. That is what I truly needed to know before buying the Mega Drive Mini. I'm disappointed... but I'm happy to know. Don't know why other reviewers on KZread never bothered with testing out the Hyperkin controller on it. Cos I've got the Hyperkin controller. Close enough. Nothing will ever quite be like the original genesis, but us old timers can kick back with a collection like this.
I LOVE your channel! You constantly are putting out great content and every video I am glued to the screen. Keep up the good work dude.
Nice thorough review! I like how you even touched on controller compatibility. Nice attention to detail!
Great review man, love all the auto comparisons. The lag sucks, it’s really disappointing. Thanks for being critical and not just praising everything - like most YT retro channels.
Forget all those other reviews, I was waiting for that Sega Lord X review.
Great in depth review! I love my Genesis mini, the build quality and attention to detail on the system are really nice. I did notice the sound bugs you pointed out but it isn't really a deal breaker for me, I really wanted to support Sega and hope all of the other Sega fans out there do too so we can get a Saturn mini!
Another great work from SLX! It would be amazing if they release later an ultimate edition with Sega CD and 32X games included. BTW the pc engine mini Will come with CD ROM games
Seeing that box brings back memories from when my sister got me the genesis with Sonic 1 packed in and an extra controller way back in 1991. A week later I got alien storm and a few other games and eventually streets of rage 1 two months before streets of rage 2 came out. So happy my genesis is still working and I can use the everdrive to play games I used to have along with games I wanted to get. Hopefully I'll be able to get a mini too since it's looking good even with the few problems mentioned and hopefully sega will do a firmware fix for them.
I'm looking forward to a potential Sega Master System, Saturn, or Dreamcast miniature console more than a Genesis mini, as I have many of these games already. Saturn games are getting ridiculously expensive and my Dreamcast has survived several surgeries to keep me playing (the original) "Crazy Taxi," "Jet Set Radio," and "Skies of Arcadia."
I saw one at a flea market for $50. My biggest concern after that AtGames trash heap was the sound and graphics. I'm not disappointed at all and might have to grab it. Just being able to play MegaMan The Wily Wars legit is almost enough for me.
Great to get the comparison clips - the sound seems very accurate to me even while wearing headphones. Lag seems not too noticeable until you cut to the original and then instantly notice it's much quicker. Not sure about this vs my laptop with Genesis style pad. Got a SNES Mini and happy with it; I like the convenience, authentic controller, CRT filter, rewind function and low lag.
It's strange how illegal roms played on Kega Fusion have less sound lag. But I'm glad this plays well. Great review as usual. Did you know that if you open up the mini Sega CD they put a surprise in there for us? Yea it doesn't actually play or do anything besides look cool but they put cardboard computer chips and a sonic CD disc printed inside. Someone I follow opened it up with a screwdriver and found the Easter Egg! Now that's fan service!
I got my Sega Genesis Mini this past Christmas. I was so excited to have it, I nearly cried tears of joy. It always was one of my favorite game consoles of all time. The line up of games is very solid. Mega Man: The Willy Wars being the one game I really didn't expect to get at all. Honestly, this even blows some game compilations like Rare Replay away.
Saw this review and just bought my sega genesis mini. Thanks for the review SLX. Sega should hire you. Seriously. Keep up the great work.
Best review yet bar none! not just an unboxing talking about Japanese mini tower etc.
Is it just my imagination, or does the sound delay for a couple games actually help rather than hurt? Streets of Rage 2, for example, in the original, the punch sound effect starts at the very beginning of the animation, before the hit. In the Mini, the sound is delayed, and it ends up syncing better with the punch. Same with Sonic, the jump sound effect begins just before the jump animation in the original, and feels more natural with a delay.

@sherrdreamz7232

@@nunyabaznus7851 original hardware vs typical emulation lag in addition to the 3-5 frames delay due to the underclocked processor of the Genesis Mini is to blame primarily. There are TV's and monitors that can get digital output down to less than 30-40 milliseconds of lag. "Game Mode" plus a real 120 to 240 refresh rate can help. Yet even if the best combination of modern display tools are utilized the Sound lag remains on the system. It's slightly worse than top of the line emulation software, which already has nearly half a second of lag compared to a native Sega Genesis.
@Lightblue2222

i hooked a pc up to my flatscreen and the lag is un-noticable compared to sega mini, which can be seen in the sound just from watching a youtube video and comparing it to any other version, even atgames lol. so yea its kinda bad,. Glad someone can find a bright side to it.
@nunyabaznus7851

@@Lightblue2222 ... if you don't own one to test it, you have no right to assume anything. i own an original Street Fighter Arcade Cabinet. the version on Sega Genesis Mini has almost zero input lag, and i can pull off moves as smooth as melted butter. even the hardest moves to pull off like Zangiefs spinning pile driver are actually easier with the Sega Genesis controller than the Real Arcade Cabinet. Maybe the sound is wrong to you, i wouldn't know, i Mute the volume because Sega Genesis music is Horrible anyway compared to SNES. but it has nothing to do with lag.
I already have a Genesis with almost all the games in the Genesis mini. But the quality and attention of detail makes want to get it. They really excelled here.
Excellent analysis. Saw this in the shop yesterday and wasn't that fussed - but this video is making me think about picking one up now!
Got one today as a really late birthday present at my GameStop! Holy cow! It has been so long since I played a Sega Genesis! I’m loving it so far!
Cannot wait for mine to arrive
In my opinion, the BEST way to play Genesis games is on the mighty Kega FUSION emulator. Flawless emulation, full 32X and Sega CD support (not to mention Master System and Game Gear), razor sharp graphics, flawless sound, savestates, cheat codes, unlimited controller compatibility. I think it's even BETTER than the original hardware!
The sound of Genesis games was always the most iconic part of the system to me. While the Mini's sound is faithful the delay is a potential deal breaker for me.
the teams who are trying to hack this system have discovered that the chip inside has been under clocked/not running at full power apparently
Thank you for the review, I was wondering about this myself. The library thing isn't something I worry about with these mini consoles as there will always be a way to add games to them later. That is unfortunate that the sounds are low and laggy. At first I was thinking "How bad could it be." But then after listening to it I was surprised by how off they sounded. Especially in Road Rash. I was thinking of getting one but I think I will wait for it to come down in price first, or at least when the 6 button controllers come down also.

It's in the menu for sure. It's almost like the dpad is ultra sensitive. You get use to it, but it can be slightly irritating.
I got the Genesis mini and been enjoying it alot I also got the Sega Genesis Flashback 2018 Edition the best one they ever put out of the Genesis I like both cause each has games on it that the other doesn't but the Flashback plays original cartridges which the mini doesn't plus has a SD card slot to add more games without having to jailbreak it , I got them both on sale under the retail price at Target , button line they keep me satisfied and I get enjoyment out of em , I too grew up being a Sega Genesis fan , I got one for Christmas in '91 and played it up until I got a PlayStation when it cameout which also got it for Christmas but alot of great memories with the consoles I did have growing up , keep up the good work
Because of the nature of the Genesis sound and music, sega fans have much more of a reason to want the original hardware. I haven’t found very many software options that can replicate what that Yamaha chip could do. It’s almost like a evolutionary dead end.
Do to delivery problems still waiting for my Genesis Mini but appearently my Mega Drive Mini from Japan will be delivered sometime today!

Gotta love the 42 games on the Sega Genesis Mini like Sonic, Castlevania, Contra, Mega Man, Streets of Rage 2, Street Fighter II and many more!!
Now for a Sega CD Mini, then Saturn and finally Dreamcast. If they're feeling extra bold, maybe a MasterSystem/32X combo? I think combining those two might be best since there's not really a whole lot of compelling software on the latter to do a mini by itself and, while I have little experience with the MasterSystem, I'm compelled to say the same with that console as well.

To be honest I think the mini has slightly clearer sound. There was some slight his and distortion on both road rash and streets of rage that wasn't there in the mini.

I'd agree. A good collectible for most, a decent option for playing the games for the rest.
Picked up 2. One for me and another for my buddy. Good stuff.
Rocket Knight once again gets left out. It's a real shame that gem of a game is destined to be forgotten and never re-released ever again.
The more I see about the Genesis Mini the more I like it. The only lag in audio I could see in your video was in Thunder Force III. But I already own the real Genesis and Saturn versions so that doesn't matter. The rest of the lag was undetectable to me. But that's not surprising consider I went to play Rock Band on my projector the other day and calibration showed ENORMOUS lag that I had never noticed when playing games. LOL Based on your video it looks like M2 did an absolutely incredible job with this and I'm almost tempted to get one just for how cool the thing is. But with the entire genesis library on my Wii and my real Genesis with loose games that need reproduction cases...I just can't justify it right now. But if I had the income of my last job this would be a day one purchase for nostalgia and execution alone. Tho it DOES make me want a model 1 just for the heavenly stereo sound through headphones. Ah, the memories! Also, "oomph" does NOT belong on menu screen music. When you are stuck in an area for a long time (a dungeon, an overworld, a menu, rousing music becomes REALLY annoying REALLY fast). So I'll disagree with you on that as well.

Sega was a big part of my childhood. Genesis, Game Gear, Sega CD, and Dreamcast.
With how detailed and intricate M2 was, I'm surprised there isn't an option to emulate the overscan like you see in Sonic 1 or Road Rash 2
A great investment although here in Australia our Megadrive version had no power adaptor, only the cord it's self. It's a shame these Mini consols don't have an official way to pay and upgrade the games library, if Sega actually had a working cartridge port or download option then they could do multi cartridge releases or something. Us collectors would pay for that stuff. That aside, I did find my self sitting on the floor like a kid staring at the TV all excited while I casually flipped though the library and re discovered old memories. A very nicely boxed up package that is worth the investment. For what it's worth, it's actually the Original 3 button controller and faithful replication of the console that had me wanting this particular Mini. I had not bothered with mini consols until this came along, however If the Snes mini actually had all the Donkey Kong Countries I would have bought that as well. I would definitely get a Sega Master System and Dreamcast if they ever made one but honestly do want a bigger library because the Sega content is so good!
Im so happy i got mine sega did a great job brought back lots of memories 😊😊 sonic 2 was my main game happy with the game line up👍👍👍👍

@@shadowflash705 it's not that simple. If Sega were to work with "pirates" and legitimize the sites and people around the emulation community it could get them into legal trouble, you could see Nintendo suing the pants off Sega for doing that.
Just as a suggestion, you really ought to reach out to Sega to apply for a job in marketing.
Hey, what is that title music (home screen)? 4:17 Is it a mash up of songs from the Genesis library? If so, which games? I'm dying to know!!!
great review all around (Almost everyone else on youtube who have reviewed the Sega mini have come off very phony except electricplayground & yourself (AAA+++ going to buy the Sega mini sometime tonight) Hopefully the sales are good enough for Sega to get off there hands and expand on there back catalog the master system, 32x, Sega CD & Saturn are really good add-one/consoles that don’t get enough mainstream attention give us something more then just the 16bit era
As far as the sound goes, it's similar to music nowadays. A Casio Synthesizer keyboard from the 80's will not sound like a modern version. Manufacturing processes and materials have changed. Some chip manufacturers are no longer in business. So it's hard to fully duplicate. Minor issue.
Best thing is that I just found out you can use the ebitdo wireless Sega Saturn controller on the mini. I just picked it up for 20 bucks Cdn on amazon. I can't wait. The Saturn controller was the best game pad ever made IMO. I also have their Nintendo styled arcade stick and the PlayStation styled Pro pad and that's some quality stuff for its ease of use and build quality. Its cheap to upgrade the arcade stick if you need to but out of the box its not that bad. Nothing compares to my MS elite controller or my moded xbone Hori stick but damn 8bitdo makes some quality product. I can't wait to use it on my mini....which I only looked up cause I was watching this review for something I own already for some reason so thanks?😂👍🤘 I was going to buy the Genesis wired 8 button controller for 10 bucks more too. 😅
It has scanlines as well... you have to hit.. C i think.. to make it apply it when messing with screen settings.
Sound issues aside (which i can ignore) the Genesis Mini is outstanding. My game shop had the 6 button pad but not that 8 button deal youve got... interesting. Cant wait to hack the shit out of this and add Musha, Target Earth, ESWAT, EWJ 2 and Shinobi 2 among the myriad of additions for my personal Ultimate Sega Mini Library :-) Love the content, peace!

Me neither
I just picked one of these up at Walmart the other day. My daughter and I have played through 3 of the games so far, and it seems pretty cool. I love the feel of the controllers, and there's a bunch of games that I can't find or afford. Of course, the first game she chose was Sonic ( already have the NOT FOR RESALE original cartridge, and a working Genesis Model 2 and Retro-Bit Trio and Trio+ to play it on, plus a version on Nintendo DS or 3DS that I bought her 🤣). She was getting aggravated, and I told her, "you know we have the original game and a *Game Genie* sitting less than two feet away from you, right?

Maybe Sonic is your daughter's familiar point of reference that she use to see if the product is any good?

@@robertmcmillan3638 I like that theory, but I'm pretty sure that thought didn't enter her mind at the time 😄
Bought a sega mini cause I wanted that old school controller after I heard it was a perfect replica of the orginal remotes I knew I had to get one of the 42 games I only really care for about 8 of the games on it
The lack of Thunder Force IV/Lightening Force is a real shame.
Wait. If you switch it to Japanese, will the Tetris Rom change? Also, I've heard they fixed the framerate on Wily Wars. The original suffered from considerable frame rate plummeting.
I got mine on day 1. I love it!
Eagerly anticipating a Saturn-mini. Though they said it's still ways off.

Miguel Mota they didn’t even say shit about a Saturn mini so you’re fucking lying.
Yeah I am really disappointed we didnt get at least 1 6 button included, especially since the Hyperkin usb ones I had dont work on the mini. :(
