Japan's Forgotten Music Genre: Shibuya-kei
Музыка
Next Video: • TOKYO SNIPER: The Last...
Shibuya-kei is a genre of music that emerged in Tokyo, Japan during the 90's, and has gotten forgotten in recent years. I just wanted to show some love to a genre that is underappreciated.

Shibuya-key is more like a music wave instead a genre itself. It can include different music genres and that’s why we can hear bossa nova, hip hop, pop, electronic and many other genres through bands and groups. Good video, keep it up!
Bro, it seems like your audio is only coming through the left channel. There might have been a mistake during the editing process.
PIZZICATO FIVE mentioned, and I'm here.
Cibo Matto's "Stereotype A" was my comfort album back in high school, legit listened to it on repeat. Really liked Moonchild and King of Silence, something about the 2000s relaxing r&b pop just does it for me
City Popの次は絶対渋谷系が流行ると思ってるんだけどいまいちまだピンと来ないよね。素敵な動画をありがとう!

I can see your channel blowing up, you already have your own unique editing style, interesting topics many like me enjoy. Its not a matter of if but when, and I'll be here when it happens! Cheers from NYC!

i have no clue how i found this but good shit
I always wondered what the music in Jet Set Radio was.
hell yeah i love halcali
There's a radio host in COLOMBIA who made an entire 10 hour special with the best sound of Shibuya Kei/Japan jazz and house. Thanks to him we know Pizzicato Five, Cornelius, Sakamoto, etc... playing in colombian radio during the 90's and early 2000. I could share that special show with u.

Disculpa por no responder antes, pero sería genial si pudieras mandarlo o dejar un link o algo. Gracias
Great video. It's definitely an overlooked genre in the music world, but one of my personal favorites!
Thank you for doing the homework on this 🙏
Audio only comes from the left channel
Shibuya kei is so campy and a little different from things that came before and after in Japan, love it, and I see 60s and jazzy influence in it

It’s like.. “square” music if it was fun
Man I must listen to a lot of music. Because I’ve been listening to this genre for years.

It is so nice to hear someone give this music the appreciation it deserves- Halicali, especially. Bacon is such an iconic album. I would also highly recommend checking out Doopees. They have really just one album but it is life-changing. Great video dude

I love the DOOPEE TIME album --definitely a top 10 favorite album for me. You'll for sure see it on this channel some day, that place in time.
this is great.
pzicato five was very popular in my country Brazil, they even recorded a show with a very well-known Brazilian singer called Fernanda Takai
my left ear enjoyed this vid

great video about a genre I didn't really know existed! really reminds me of dreamcast style, especially as an infulence for soemthing like jet grind radio. but as a critique the narration audio would have been nice to be more lcear, unless it was meant to be a bit more lo-fi intentionally

I just suck at voice mixing 😅
Never forgotten.
nice video! cool of you to mention oh penelope they are too underappreciated. I wish you could have went more in depth on Living, Dining & Kitchen Records as they are so closely knit with a lot of shibuya-kei acts at that time, maybe for another video 😅
I have never forgotten..
Thxx for ur video. I'm Korean and I'm really into Shibuya-kei. But it's really hard to find any informations in Korean cuz It was not boom in Korea, and unfortunately I can't read Japanese. Really thxx. And I hope Shibuya-Kei to be re-examined like City Pop. Cuz it's not difficult to listen and also really sophisticated
pizzicato five!!! :D
Heavily influenced by Brazilian MPB
The spotify playlist looks like it was cut off - can you update the description with the full link?
dawg my left ear
it’s kinda like japans version of the early 2000s 60s revival a la bands like the white stripes
Pizzicato Five is a good one. I ONLY know it from Kaori's little dance in SSX Tricky... but it took me like over 10 years to find out what song was playing at the time. 0:32 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4WZzaeSnMi_fsY.html
forgotten by whomst?
Please reupload with better audio

What has the music genre forgotten? Or did people forget _it?_ Either way, your claim doesn't make any sense.

City pop?

It's similar to City Pop in the sense that it's a Japanese music genre that was heavily influenced by Western sounds, but a phrase I like to use to describe it is "City Pop's Younger Sibling". City pop was more 70's and 80's, while Shibuya-kei is more 90's. They for sure have some crossover though

Sibling or child
@_URBAN_GROVE
Ай бұрын
I definitely lean towards younger sibling. To me, a child (or successor) of a genre has to have very clear connection and points between the two, similar to how rock succeeded the blues. City pop and Shibuya-kei have a connection and influence, but nowhere near close enough to call it the child --I think. It ultimately doesn't really matter though. Child or sibling, Shibuya-kei is just really dope 👍
hmm
Its basically katamaricore
It wasn’t and it is not a music genre tho. Is a cultural movement. Even SK main personalities disagree in calling it a music genre since its pulls from many cultural sources and it is not only about music, not by a long shot.

I would say it's an "Umbrella genre". It's still useful to describe some artists

Same with City-Pop
it never went anywhere, unless you got into it less than a year ago on some trend, its been thriving for ages. also if it has been "forgotten in recent years" why are there so many modern shibuya kei playlists with tons of views from waves of new fans and artists? trender.
