What we call Dance-Punk is experiencing a resurgence in the post-punk scene and beyond. While genres come in and out of season all the time, it seems to be happening exactly every 20 years for Dance-Punk. So why are the punks dancing now? And what makes this time different?
From the ashes of disco, a new sound emerged that shook the foundations of what punk could be. This video traces the explosive trajectory of Dance-Punk, from its roots in the rebellious energy of the late '70s to its resurgence in today's post-punk scene. We spotlight the genre-defining tracks and pivotal artists like LCD Soundsystem and IDLES who have redefined what it means to mix punk with dance.

I'm from England, born in 83. There have always been (I guess you could call them) _"Rock Adjacent"_ crossover acts in other genres. Prodigy, over here, got tons of young people from the dancey-ravey-techno-ey kinda scenes at the time into the rock and metal scenes, and vice-versa. Prodigy themselves having a live guitarist who was in an industrial-esque metal band I was into at the time called Pitchshifter. All those groups mentioned would be something both genres could shake hands on and meet in the middle. Great shouts.

The anti-disco backlash was very much a response from mainstream rock radio (and general racism/homophobia), not the punks. The infamous "Disco Sucks" rally(/riot) was organized by a rock station DJ who was pissed that his station had changed format to disco/soul, IIRC. Friggin' Blondie put out a straight-up disco *banger* for crying out loud.

The thing is there were always a lot of cross-pollination since punk came out with disco, hip-hop and early electronic music. Proto house and techno DJs in New York, Chicago and Detroit played postpunk tracks but as soon as the scenes got any traction outside of their original spaces, the new fans wanted to focus on the core of their favored genres, but plenty of people involved still kept open ears and being influenced by genres, even if many fans were unaware
