Nioh 1+2: Yasuke is "The Obsidian Samurai" Samurai Warriors 5: Yasuke is a samurai Yasuka anime by MAPPA, one of the greatest anime studios: Yasuke is constantly referred to as a Samurai. There are many more. While people were editing Wikipedia fighting over it, I decided to look up his portrayal in Japanese Media. From a play to a children's book to manga and games. In Japanese media Yasuke is always refered to as a Samurai. So the question is, are the Japanese too stupid to understand what a Samurai is in their own culture? They portray him as a samurai, that's for sure. You can call him a nobody, but there are mangas, anime, books and games about and with him in it. LONG before this culture war shit as well Hell there's a 1968 children's Japanese book about the Samurai Yasuke that won the Japanese writers association children's book of the year the following year.

Japan needs to take the Egypt approach to this, sue Ubisoft for intentionally trying to vandalize their history.

I know right? Most other AC games they've had historical figures show up as supporting characters or people you help out and it's usually done very respectfully. This was done by a bunch of upper class people with a white savior complex. Ghost of Tsushima was made by a US Studio as a love letter to Feudal Japan. They got so much right, and had an incredible and complex Japanese protagonist and story. This AC game is a slap in the face, with almost no reverence to such an important historical time.

Isn’t it fascinating how EVERY game before had a character that was representative of the areas they were from but Japan is just not allowed the same treatment? Yasuke could’ve been a character you run into but that’s not enough apparently. How « inclusive »!

Yasuke wasn't even Nobunaga retainer, actually Yasuke met Nobunaga in late 1581 and Nobunaga died 7 month after that. He was more like his curiosity pet. Nobunaga wrote some line about Yasuke, and no single line mention him fighting, the bushi thing can be accurate but being a Samurai and taking part in Nobunaga campaign is pure bullshit.

It is a historical fact that Yasuke existed, but no historical record of him fighting on the battlefield has been found. If he had been an official samurai in the first place, he would have been given a surname. He did not have a surname. He only has a first name, Yasuke.

Any developer that opens there game credits with "This game was made by a multicultural team of different religions, races, ethnicities, creeds and gender identities" ...you know it's going to be some woke trash.

As I recall Ghosts was panned by critics, but if memory serves critics in Japan felt the game was well done and showed tremendous respect to the culture of the samurai and Japan.

They can rewrite Yasuke's history all they want.. the fact remains thanks to countless historical texts that to be a samurai, they have to be Japanese lol.

Japanese hating the assassins creed set in japan is straight up failure. Good job messing that up, game devs.

Is this a cultural appropriation?

If Ubisoft really cared about DEI and black character leads they would make a culturally and historically accurate game that makes sense. Maybe the countless wars against colonialism? Maybe a African hero who unites tribes to fight against the trans Atlantic slave trade? Italo-Ethiopian war? Zulu Anglo war? There’s so many settings but they choose to make a black samurai? Not only is it disrespectful to Japanese, but it’s disrespectful to blacks across the world that their history isn’t being portrayed properly in games. Why is it always a black guy that’s in some foreign land? Can people not research history?

How ironic they loved Ghost but hate Shadows.

The way Ubisoft does business is they will make one of the DLC outfits a Japanese character and you can wear it like armor.

the problem is cultural, the new class divide is ascended only by capitulating to wokery. where they choose to have their studios doesn't help, for example ubisoft in england is in royal leamington spa, highly affluent yet a labour voting area, tells you all you need to know.

A black historical character that only was known to fight in one battle in history wearing armor with he wore yes but he was not a samurai or Northerly considered a Samurai and it only one battle they can find him fighting in but the worst part is we have a super lady boss

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the top preordered game on PS5 in Japan. In fact preorders are strong across the board and it’s already set to be one of the top selling games in the franchise and this year. You’ve lost this battle, on to the next one. Star Wars Acolyte drops next month, maybe you can work on the down vote ratio some more and act like it matters.

The DEI hire wouldn't fit through the sliding doors back in the days of samurai wives.

They should just have character creation and let people make their char look however they wish or have them wear hood constantly like in AC1. What i find is the real issue rather than player character appearance is ubisoft not hiring actual japanese people as consultants. There is no excuse in the internet age to not hire people from other parts of the world for any creative process.

They could've just had Yasuke as a character in the game's story. Then maybe DLC where you can play as Yasuke. Having him as a main character makes no sense
