James McBride is the author of the National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird, “a brilliant romp of a novel” (The New York Times Book Review) in which a young boy born into slavery joins abolitionist John Brown’s doomed crusade. He is also the author of the bestselling memoir The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother and the biography Kill ’Em and Leave: Searching for James Brown and the American Soul. His other fiction includes the novels Miracle at St. Anna, Song Yet Sung, and Deacon King Kong, which was an Oprah’s Book Club pick. Also an award-winning composer, screenwriter, journalist, and saxophonist, he is a distinguished writer in residence at New York University and received the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama in 2016. In The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, McBride tells a story of small town secrets, cultural collisions, and the sustaining love of community-in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.

One of the things I love about the book is that there are new characters introduced throughout. Our lives are lived in ever expanding circles.

I so admire James McBride, he's a great narrator/storyteller, historian, and musician. Dude, you are so 😎! His writing is addictive, educational, and informative. Grateful for your references to the Gullah communities. 😎😎 I have ties to Low Country South Carolinians - Coosawhatchie, Pocotaligo, Tullifinny, Point South, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, etc. The culture is amazing, aye?🤔

I thought of Melquiades from 100 Years of Solitude when Malachi comes to town. Love the magical realism.

Reading it now. Loving it. VCC counselor 1965, 66, 67. Changed my life too. My father Warren was the outside auditor for WCAU in the day. WCAU did the initial investigative work on the Pennhurst case. The Court assigned a special master to oversee Pennhurst; Warren was the auditor for the special master. When I was a grad student at BMC GSSWSR in the early 70s I visited Pennhurst to see for myself. Everything about this book shines a light on my path too. The reference to camp and equality is absolutely true and camp served as a reference point for how the world is supposed to be. 100% developed and fueled by Sy.

Mr. McBride, I loved the book and was sad that I finished it. If you're reading this can you answer one question. Was Elijah, the most mystical of the Jewish prophets the inspiration for Malachi? I couldn't help think that. If anyone else has thoughts about this you're welcome to post.
