James Lee Burke's works are filled with metaphors. For me, he's the landscape artist whose brush is his pen, the story his canvas, and the words his brush strokes, delivered with such passion through Will Patton's voice, which color the painting, allowing us to transcend into the scenery, so as to observe the flesh and blood characters inhabiting the story within; what a team they make.

Will Patton IS Dave Robicheaux. Between Burke's powerful descriptive metaphors and Patton's seductive, smooth Southern accent, the story line comes alive and you find yourself totally submerged. Magic is what happens when the amazing talent of James Lee Burke tandems with Patton's gift for the spoken word.

Will Patton is awesome as a narrator. I fell in love with Patton's narration of the Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater.

I'm listening to my first James Lee Burke book, Swan Peak and it's just great. Will Patton is a fantastic narrator his performance in Faulkner's Light in August is sublime. I feel like a gold miner after striking a really rich seam, James Lee Burke and Will Patton, what a combination.

I have a long ride to work, to and from each day. I've listened to hundreds of audio books. I now actively seek out books narrated by Mr. Patton and insert them, as I can find them, as a 'treat' between the other audio books I listen to. ...and when these books narrated by him start, I find myself leaning back, relaxing and am in the presence of an old friend.

I agree he is the best American reader of audiobooks. But back in the 60s, 70s and 80s, long before any American could do a decent reading, I was listening to books read by British actors, many of them classically trained in Shakespeare, and they were always excellent.

I have not listen to Patton perform any of Burke’s works, but I’ve listen to 4 he’s done for Stephen King, and he is one of my favorite audio book narrators. And I’ve listen to well over 50 titles, so probably 30-40 narrators I’ve heard.

I love Will Patton's rendition of Burke's work. He's perfect for it. But, as Patton himself admitted in an interview with an audiobook magazine, the better the writing the more he channels it. Which implies that the result is less a performance on his part and more a delivery of the author's performance. Burke is a literature lover's hall of famer. His writing is musical, poetic, atmospheric and steeped in metaphor. There is not a superfluous word in Burke's telling of stories he creates in the classic way: with purpose and craft, with the artist's sensibility toward his subjects that renders them both comprehensible and profoundly meaningful, timeless and beautiful in the way of all great works of art. Each is a sliver of Burke's own soul laid bare for the world to experience. They are the closest works we have to contemporary classics, morality tales for a society grown ignorant of morals. I wish everyone would read Burke's stories, but more, I wish everyone had the sensitivity and enlightenment to understand them. Yes, on the surface, many of them are what we call Mysteries of the hard boiled set. Many of them are historical fiction. But none of them are of their retail categories, only. People who claim the Robicheaux novels don't move quickly enough haven't the sensitivity and rigor required to truly participate in literature, not the imagination required for appreciation. I can't help but wonder why people who read stripped down prose filled with wooden characters and predictable plots bother to read at all? Better, they just grab up some blurb copy and forget about the challenges of literature, cat all. I suspect these were the kids who read Cliff's Notes in school rather than committing to the very real intellectual rigor required of even a superficial understanding of Shakespeare, Dickens, Tolstoy, Faulkner. I suspect, too, that these same people misunderstood Hemingway in his brevity because Hemingway is deceptive in his brevity. What seems simple is anything but. But a superficial reading of Hemingway (or even Fitzgerald) might genuinely lead people to believe that all such stories can be told in this distilled fashion and so look for a sparseness of prose as proof of their strength. Rarely is it that. To discount Burke's landscape as important is like removing the circles of Hell from Dante's field trip. Burke is for the literary aficionado and should not be attempted by the uninitiated. To attempt Burke with only a smattering of pop fiction in your repertoire is to risk total confusion, moral disorientation, and philosophical and literary embarrassment. Without some fairly extensive knowledge of the Catholic Bible, essential moral principles, and a facility with the English language, the neophyte reader of Burke is the foolish and arrogant inexperienced climber of Everest who completely underestimates both the challenges and the rewards, neither of which are attainable for them.

Love this video. . . Everything. The books, the character, the voice. Especially James Lee burke appreciating and understanding I need to hear it. I was looking up will Patton cause he read End of Watch by Stephen king and it's a trilogy and I wanted more , and I'm not sure I read the 2nd one, and now i remember i bet there's more dave robicheaux in my life coming up. Yay! There's another author who usually has the perfect raspy voiced voice actor to match his detective and then he didn't, so I looked it up and the writer couldn't care less. Never listened. Dang, if a reader isn't good enough or at least matched up somehow it's unlistenable.

I love James Lee Burke. His books have given me years of enjoyment. I especially love the Dave Robicheaux series. I have come to identify the narrative voice of Will Patton as THE voice of Robicheaux. They are one in the same, two parts coming together to make a whole. Patton's narrative voice embodies the sound and vernacular of the region. I guess I'm just a person who likes continuity. Hammer is good, I'm not taking anything away from him, but, again to me, he lacks that soft smooth voice of the South. Patton's voice is almost mesmerizing to me. Once you've heard him narrate a book none other can replace him. I wish it had been possible to have had Will Patton narrate all the Robicheaux series I understand that people have differences of opinion, that's what makes thte world go 'round, but I am speaking strictly from a personal POV.

Will is a far better reader than Burke is a writer. Listen to him read his (WPs) equals, Faulkner, Flannery O' Conner, Beckett. equally over sentimental relationships to the poorly drawn female figures. He camoflouges his medicrity with his ear's blood relation to the southern voice. Oh hum. Patton is a great reader, he has done this guy a real servce.
