In the seventies, the pilots did a lap and told the engineers what to do to improve the car. Today the riders take a turn and engineers say the pilots what to do and how to drive the car.

enrico moretti You speak out of your arse. The drivers describe what is happening to the cars and the engineer tries to work out how to fix the problems the car/driver may be having. This is the way it has always been and is still the same to this very day. Stop spreading misinformation.

He had a nasty temper. On the track at least, I don't know about his personal life. He punched a track Marshall for just making sure Hunt was not hurt after a crash. Hunt punched the poor guy and then immediately helped him up and apologized profusely. He was really passionate and intense on the track.

Yes, he was a very eloquent 'received' English speaker. That's one of the benefits of attending a very good public or grammar school.

He was So well spoken, and yet so frivolous. What a legend mate.

A great motor racing hero and very sad that he died so young.

I am Brazilian, 51 years old, always loved Hunt's driving and life style. What a jewel. RIP James.

How very humble for his time.

Great interview by James; he was far more sophisticated than I ever imagined. A rockstar F1 driver if there ever was.

My hero as a 16 yr old, got his autograph twice and could've had more, the last of the F1 drivers that loved his followers, fondly remember the 76 Brands Hatch FF festival where he was guest of honour and went around the track with every winner. True honest bloke with time for the public, sorely missed.

I was there too..at 22..saw him in the Pentagon bar afterwards knocking back a few pints ..borrowed 3500 next year for 1 year old Van Dieman FF..we had big dreams back then.RIP James

Fantastic view on life. Good wisdom and love his commentary. James added much life and color to F1. He is greatly missed.

It's hard not to admire the man, he clearly absolutely loved life.

The quintessential cheeky, stoic and heroic Englishman. He got in when the mix of play and display was perfect for the ultimate playboy. He retired to relax and watch the F1 supermen of the ferocious 1980s speed by. He got out before the world made great men like him utterly irrelevant. What a beautiful life.

Happy Birthday James!! He would of been 67 today. He was his own man. So charismatic and unique.

Yeah such a nice guy and very educated , its sad he died so young and just as bad was 1 year later we lost Senna too it is literally burned into my memory as a child of the 90s watching that accident at Imola live on the BBC it was a nightmare day that i try not to remember but cannot forget.

What an amazing interview I'm so glad I saw this it gives me more perspective on Mr Hunt and his depth which basically was just known as a Playboy but he put his heart and soul in this thing had a dream and vision and he carried through and he became a Formula 1 Champion God bless them may rest in peace and he's up there he's up there with some of the great ones

I remember in 1976 just before the US Grand Prix James Hunt appeared on the Mike Douglas Show along with Mike Connors (Mannix) who knew quite a bit about auto racing. It was a fantastic episode and you realized that James Hunt was no ordinary racing car driver. It was impossible not to like him and he was so affable. It should also be mentioned that James Hunt was actually attending and then dropped out it before he went into auto racing which is just unbelievable.

If he was born in the 1920's he'd be Wing Commander (rtd) J. Hunt DFC & Bar DSO with 38+ kills. Discussing his Spitfire and fear of death etc. He's like a 1970's version of Douglas Badar, Bob Stanford-Tuck, Johnnie Johnson respectfully. Niki Lauda would be the roll of Galland or the Steinhoff! Or even further back - the Red Baron himself - Richthofen!

I have to say James Hunt is a character that few actors could play and be "better looking" than. Which is rare in docudrama films.

And don;t forget to go and see movie RUSH it was great.

I could listen to this guy for ages. He's posh but not pretentious.

Its not a "snobby upper-class accent" It is a proper English mans accent. A man who can talk English how it should be spoken so that everyone listening can understand what is being said. With out quarks or distortion to words phrases or sentences.

I can speak the queens english. I am born and bread within the realms of our Great Britian. My father and forefathers before that fought both the Huns and the Boars and were somewhat successful. I like this guy. I really like him a lot. I am really sad I never got to meet him. Hemsworth didn't do his accent as posh but it startled me to hear his voice. The intonation is spot on.

He says right here that he didn't want to keep going after he was made financially. His approach makes sense to me. Don't keep going at something if it's dangerous, or unpleasant if you don't need to financially. Until I heard him here, I didn't understand why he retired after winning one championship.

Wonderful wasn't he ? What a shame there aren't more personalities like him in sport. The movie has made him immortal now.

It is a bit surreal listening to some of what James says knowing what is about to happen. Over the nexts few months he will become a major player in one of the greatest sporting stories of all time and with a world championship to boot!

Good catch! And the rescinding of Hunt's Spanish Grand Prix win had not yet been reversed.

Rush got it wrong. James is a much more grounded, sensitive and intelligent self aware man, going by this interview, than how it was portrayed in the movie. Case in point. 13:00 onwards.

I agree. The James Hunt of Rush had a pronounced dark side. Actor Hemsworth's portrayal of Hunt was good, to be sure, but Hemsworth himself looked shopworn and was in fact much older than this gorgeous, shining Hunt of 1975

I actually cannot imagine how disappointed Fangio would be to have one of his fans act in such a way. He was a classy man so why don't you keep his name out of your mouth until you can find a bit of class of your own.
