At the best part lol... Lars just wanted a drum solo 😂
Things like that it's what makes Metallica so great! True fans will always love Metallica.

Lars was tight with that double bass

Saying Lars is a bad drummer is tired, passé, pro-Napster "they sold out in the 90s" Millennial angst. Saying Lars was a bad drummer was the cliched way to get back at them for taking fans to court in the early file sharing days. We're over it now. He's tighter with One here than he has been in a while. He's only been playing the song for the past 36 years. Meanwhile he doesn't even attempt Dyers Eve and just does skank beats through the verses, skipping the double bass. (He doesn't have the required 10 toms for the studio recording intro, either.) For his part, in Dyers Eve James doesn't pick along with the double bass the way a modern metal band would, either. I've transcribed Dyers Eve into my DAW. It is in 7/4 16ths at 195 bpm with some 9/8 fills and Lars clearly has trouble maintaining 16ths at that tempo for prolonged periods. I'd say he tops out at about 160-180 bpm for consistent, prolonged 16th note double bass speed. One is around 16ths at 200 bpm for the double bass section depending upon how you count it. Master of Puppets is around 200 bpm but it's usually counted as downpicked 8th notes when it should be 100-105 bpm 16th notes downpicked. The tempo shifts because bands back in the 80s rarely played to a click and there was no quantizing or sync-to-grid. No Metallica song goes above 16ths at 220 bpm or so for prolonged periods but newer metal bands can hit 16ths at 240 bpm. Dirk Verbeuren, ex-Soilwork now Megadeth, is one such drummer. Nick Barker, ex-Cradle of Filth, is another. Generally I find keeping the click down to around 100 bpm for most Metallica songs and counting everything as 16ths or 32nds is much cleaner to listen to than a metronome at 200+ bpm, which clicks so constantly and has such a short pocket that it gets distracting. As for how many times he has played the song, at their peak Metallica played about 200 shows a year. Their modern touring schedule is 50 shows a year. So counting rehearsal he plays One at least 100 times a year since it is played every show. At their height from 1988-1992 Metallica played about 16-17 shows a month (Wherever I May Roam tour was 224 shows over 14 months--Damaged Justice had 219 shows over 13 months). From 92-94 they also toured extensively. 224 + 219=443 x 2 (one rehearsal and one live performance) = 886. My conservative guess is he has played the song at least 2,000-3,000 times counting live and rehearsal. +1 for the album version. He has probably practiced more than that at home between tours since he can't come into rehearsals cold before shows and get everything done on time. Parts should already be tight before rehearsals. Is he as fast as modern metal drummers? No. Was Metallica ever Meshuggah? No. Did the technology exist in their prime for them to sound like Meshuggah? No. Do they want and expect to be Meshuggah? No. Lars isn't the best metal drummer ever. But he isn't a bad one when he practices. However, after Justice Metallica discovered that they no longer had to push themselves to their absolute limits to continue making music. They lost interest in this because they knew other bands would surpass them. Lars even admitted at the time that Slayer and Anthrax could outplay him. Does that make them lazy? Maybe. But if Lars practices, he is much better than his critics give him credit for. Lastly, modern metal music syncs the kick to nearly every downpick. 80s thrash metal didn't, so of course bands of that era are not going to sound as tight as modern bands with their triggered sampled drum sounds and synced to grid computerized recordings. Those new recordings owe their inspiration to Justice and Lars's playing and drum sound on that record.
