Michael Jackson was his protégé, back when the Jackson 5 toured with him. Prince modeled his look, stage presence, and music off of him. Hip hop samples him so much, he took folks to court for royalties. You're looking at one of the original game changers, lads.

I watched a documentary about James brown and one of James’ musicians told a story of how James would have them play a certain note when he hit a certain dance move. They wouldn’t know what move he was gonna do, or when he was gonna do it, if he even did do it. He said they had to have their eyes on him at all times during his live performaces to ensure they hit the correct note, on top of having complete focus on the notes required for the song that was playing. This level of genius and pure skill from James Brown and his musicians is why I will never ever accept mediocre artistry and is why James Brown will always be the ultimate ultimate Goat. He earned titles including: Godfather Of Soul, Soul Brother No1, Hardest Working Man In Show Business Mr Dynamite and he created the genre funk with his song Papas Got A Brand New Bag and he is the most sampled artist of all time with 8291 samples. James Brown is absolutely nothing to be played with and he did this during a time when all the odds were stacked against him and people were not doing these kind of things. The words genius and goat are thrown around a lot but he undeniably embodies both definitions 🙌🏾

When I lived in Seattle, I ran into him downtown. Talk about random! I thought he was a guy that lived near me and had completely adopted his look so I enthusiastically greeted him using my neighbor's name. He stopped, looked me up and down (mostly up cause he was short) and said, "Sister, my name Is James Brown. The REAL James Brown." Turns out he was in town playing a show, but I was too embarrassed to do anything other than tell him how much his music meant to me.
