Jak and Daxter in Metropolis!

ALL THE MUSIC WAS ADDED DURING VIDEO EDITING!!! And I extracted them myself from the Ratchet 1 ISO.
Metropolis (planet Kerwan) is a level in the first Ratchet & Clank game (it also appeared in the third game, but I used the one from the first game). In OpenGOAL, you can import levels, though it is still very WIP. I made real custom levels before, and I saw people importing PS1 levels from other games. I wanted to try something like that, but nicer, going one console generation further, so I randomly picked a Ratchet 1 level that was available on the internet ( www.models-resource.com/plays... ). I quickly realized why people stuck to PS1 (or similarly-detailed) levels... the custom level tools can't really handle large levels. And even if it succeeds, the game itself may refuse it, because the level heaps have their sizes (limits). A few days ago I managed to optimize it so much that it was slightly smaller than the two level heaps combined. Of course the level heaps' sizes could be increased, but I was too foolish to figure that out properly in reasonable time. So my plan was to split the level in two, which would have worked. But meanwhile some optimizations were made to OpenGOAL's custom level tools, so splitting the level was no longer necessary, I just had to be very smart and careful - the level you see in the video actually fits into one level heap (barely), so I could safely load another level if I wanted to.
Jak was extremely huge compared to the level on its original scale. I increased its scale 20-fold, and this looks okay. I used the weird Qwark robot thingie, comparing it to Jak, to see if the scale was okay-ish.
The Fisherman's boat isn't there in the original level. I added it myself to give some kind of lore explanation for how Jak managed to get here. The sky (actually a sphere) was also added by me.

Seeing mods and custom levels for Jak and Daxter are bringing my childhood dreams to life. I'm so happy there's a community for this

My theory was much more complicated and involved time loops, Lost Frontier, and the dimensionator. But I think Fisherman's boat is a much more straightforward and elegant explanation

wow, amazing! When I was a kid I always wanted to play as Jak in Ratchet's games, or play as Ratchet on Jak's games, and the same with Sly Cooper's games. Also, I wonder why is there no shadows on the buildings? A memory problem?

Level geometry never had dynamic shadows in Jak and Daxter. There were like 6-8 (I don't remember exacty) pre-set lighting sets, representing time of day proportionally, that seamlessly transitioned into each other. As far as I know, custom levels don't support this yet.

Custom lighting tools probably haven't been properly implemented yet. OpenGOAL still has a fair bit of progress to go, but when everything's been sorted out, I think you'll start to see some amazing new custom levels.

Oh my God. This is so cool. I love the precursor legacy and the first ratchet and clank. Seeing jak and daxter from the first video game on the first ratchet and clank game looks so epic! 😄
a timeline where jak would be a skin in not just deadlock but other r&c games.
The moving platforms in the obstacle course and the elevators seem like they can definitely be done, with the moving platforms in the Lost Precursor City and the elevators from the Forbidden Jungle Temple. Interesting

Great work, very cool. But woah, it makes you realise how massive, dynamic and immensely detailed this level is. In R&C: -The lampposts are destructible -Al's statue rotates -ALL those vehicles are constantly moving -Elevators -The door in Al's garage opens/closes -The escalators move -Loads more This level would take a lot of effort to fully port. It's super interesting

Facts. It always amazed me how much the original R&C has going on within the worldspace. Compared to Endako from Going Commando, I would say Kerwan was more impressive.

@@platinumpokitaru Yeah, fair point: Kerwan was far more dynamic. Although I enjoyed RC2 more overall, as it was more polished - loved the arena, armor and the gun levelling system

This is a very interesting video thank you. It feels kind of like an alternate reality, sort of strange and weird. It's an interesting opportunity to think about the differences and similarities in platforming between the games! In Jak 1 most of the gameplay focused on platforming. There was so much depth in the platforming. The art was also so beautiful. The combat existed, but you didn't have a lot of choice in how you were going to handle the combat. In Ratchet 1 the gameplay was split between platforming and medium/short ranged combat pretty evenly. So it felt like you had more variety about what to enjoy or appreciate, more things to do. But each of those had less depth then the deepest platforming gameplay parts of Jak. Kind of like the decision of either going to a buffet restaurant, or a ramen restaurant. You have to imagine that the ramen restaurant is going to serve beautiful food. But you have to be in the mood for that kind of food. And the buffet is going to be pretty good, but each individual thing isn't going to be as good as the ramen is going to be individually. Interesting to think about! 😄

That sounds smart, since the Rift Rider canonically exists in TPL. I just did not remember, so I chose the Fisherman's Boat 😄

It would be complicated, as I also made modifications to OpenGOAL itself, so I just won't do it. Maybe one day.

@@vlc-cosplayer It seems you are lacking knowledge in many areas, dear stranger. Most of your sayings don't even make sense, they look like personal problems that are completely irrelevant in this situation. So I am going to reply to just the parts that are relevant. First of all, the OpenGOAL project is highly WIP. It does not really have mod support, but it can be modified - these are not the same things. For example, to add a "custom level" properly, it is necessary to edit some GOAL code as well. In this case I also had to edit some c++ code to raise some limits. When I release something, people expect me to provide support - I did release things in the past and I did provide support. I am not going to invest effort into this though. Just wait until the project is more complete, when it has proper mod support, then theoretically I could just distribute a package that automatically works without any extra code edits. I am not afraid of Insomniac or Sony or anything, they surely don't care.

One day we be able to play through R&C 1-3 as Jak and Daxter and vice versa with Ratchet and Clank running around sandover village and than Haven City, I'm just gleefully looking forward to Jak 2 being pc ported as well and see what cool shit gets modded then :D

Well, it's very cursed and very impressive. Great job! Oh, Ratchet and Jak has a similar (or the same) he engine, as I know. So, maybe Jak can handle with every level in R&C. (I've read the description. I just assumed)

How cool it would be if someone could somehow import the enemys model and animation from Ratchet and Clank to OpenGoal

Fortunately no one ever bothered with TLF, so no one can extract its levels to put them into other games.
Imagine a situation similar to Rift Apart but from other title's perspectives where Jak or Sly have to move around different levels from their games at various points in time and space, but we also wind up going through spin off material or beta/unfinished versions of each stage
I couldn't get this level working at all. Did you remove a lot of collision to get it working?

I did a lot of stuff. And as I said, I also optimized the level itself. Plus my Jak knowledge also turned out to be useful.
im having trouble trying to get custom levels to load in. I have put it in the folder and recompiled but it wont load in it just loads the old test level
Someone release Jak II (Jul 13, 2003 NTSC prototype) in Hidden Palace from that ebay listing.

I think the entire map scale needs tobe bigger, so like Jak would fit the same size Ratchet does in the level
wait... how did you extract the songs ? there's no game data inside the R&C 1 ISO, just a .img, .16 and a .cnf file, not even the executable ELF file

There is exactly data, just not many files. I scanned the ISO with PSound and searched for the correct audios.

What i mean by "no game data" is that there isn't the game itself, audio, models, textures and levels. But thanks for the info, now i can extract all the audio !

There is no proper/easy way to share these, due to the GOAL code edits required. And it may rely on some modifications I made to OpenGOAL itself.
How the fumpus do you guys figure out the way to do things like this? Are you self-taught or did you go to school for programming? It looks very difficult but worth it by the way. Nice job.

This channel is managed/ran by one person. I have great interest in Jak, and I have some special abilities, like being very good at noticing/seeing/recognizing patterns. Other than that I can think logically. And I can do some programming as well. School gave me the very basics, and I improved a lot by myself. AND I have been "researching" Jak games for many years, and I noticed that this is very useful when using OpenGOAL.

OpenGOAL has tools for importing levels, yes. Currently you need to make the level itself in Blender, and edit some code as well. But it is very easy, and already pretty good.
Now make Ratchet & Clank in Haven City
It occurs to me that Jak doesn’t have a wall-jump. Is the project at a point where this could be programmed and animated?

Custom animations are not yet possible, but in theory a capable and determined person could program the wall jumping.
I know that Jak&Daxter is ported to pc with OpenGOAL but who or how they got the Kerman Metropolis map ???

I got the level there. I am just a user of OpenGOAL, not a developer of it. I used the level import tools, and made modifications to OpenGOAL itself, to get this working.

Hello, I am happy that yous ripped this very iconic level. I have some backstory in the description so I won't repeat it here, but anyway I may do this with other levels in the future. There are just not too many, and I can not rip levels myself.
