Just to point out that McBride's motive was to cover up war crimes, not reveal them, as he did not initially believe the allegations. So in an effort to deny these crimes and quell media speculation on the matter (rumours of war crimes were already in the public domain), he passed on legal documents to ABC News. Instead of exonerating the Special Forces, proving they were being unfairly investigated by overzealous army superiors, the documents had the opposite effect he intended. ABS News Australia used the documents as the basis of a multipart series of war crimes committed by Australian Special Forces in Afghanistan. This is why he didn't get Whistle blower protection.

In gaoling McBride our government is trying to avoid public scrutiny in explaining to the public the reasons why they lost the war. ''Officials had approached Colvin with "forceful" concerns about the lack of information given to them by Canada, causing them to lose "many, if not most - and possibly all - of our detainees", stated Colvin. He has also presented allegations that Canadian government and military officials knew about reports of abuse and human rights violations surrounding former governor of Kandahar Asadullah Khalid, saying Canadian officials heard credible sources claiming that Khalid ran a drug network, used drugs himself, used private detention facilities, and sexually abused young girls.'' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_and_the_Iraq_War I couldn't find the original news article source as it was in a 404 limbo, though ''The allegations were first sparked by University of Ottawa law professor Amir Attaran, who claimed that full versions of government documents proved Canada had willful knowledge that torture would occur before handing detainees to Afghan authorities.[2] Subsequent to this, two official complaints have led to official investigations and hearings by the Military Police Complaints Commission (MPCC). One of these unveiled parliamentary testimony by diplomat Richard Colvin, who claimed that many detainees were probably tortured, and it was a standard operating procedure for Afghan interrogators.[3] The allegations have led to a showdown in the House of Commons of Canada, as opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) had called for the releasing of relevant documents in full and unredacted form, claiming parliamentary privilege to see them. The government maintained that they had a duty to protect Canadian soldiers and citizens as the documents contained sensitive information.'' Subsequently just ''4 000'' out of the ''40 000'' pages of those reports have been available for public reason or scrutiny due to, and wishing not to have any more than that amount of documents available. The US has persecuted Wikileaks' boss Julian Assange to the point of death through a legal process of psychological torture, for his revealing of Iraq War documents hiding civilian death counts. Ironically, the effect of pubic outrage in the prisoners who had been tortured at Abu Ghraib by Julian Assange's disclosures is what led to those prisoners being delivered to torturers within the Afghani security services that had even worse ethics and did not stop torture by removing them from the Americans.

Just to point out that McBride's original motive was to cover up war crimes, not reveal them, he did not initially believe the allegations. In an effort to deny these crimes and quell media speculation on the matter (rumours of war crimes were already in the public domain), he passed on legal documents to ABC News. Instead of exonerating Special Forces members, proving they were being unfairly harassed by overzealous army superiors, the documents had the opposite effect he intended. ABS News Australia used the documents as the basis of a multipart series of war crimes committed by Australian Special Forces in Afghanistan. This is why he didn't get Whistle blower protection, because he was an accidental whistleblower.

Even he'd had the charges dropped and was now vindicated, you'd have to think he went through too much by just doing the right thing. Albo has been spineless and not acted morally and not backed those upholding actual justice. For Jordan to get to the point where he compares Albo to Scomo and is pretty disguseted by his non action for McBride and whistleblowing shows what a low has been hit in Australia by this prosecution and judgement. Shame on Albo and those who have and will continue to support this undesirable stance.

Protecting whistleblowers is the cornerstone of a functional democracy and you deserve the gratitude of every Australian for doing your bit, irrespective of personal politics. It is important to point out that McBride's original motive was to cover up war crimes, not reveal them, he initially did not believe the allegations. He thought the documents would prove the innocence of the accused special force members, end the investigation of them, and quell media speculation. Believing the Special Forces members were innocent of war crimes allegations, he spent months copying secret legal documents and carrying copies off the army based each night. He compiled a huge trove of documents that he eventually handed over to ABC New Australia. Instead, of exonerating the Special Forces, the documents he complied helped prove allegations of war crimes.

My girlfriend is Australian, (Im a swamp german), I spend roughly 50% of my time in Victoria, whenever I am back home I am scared and worry about her when she's out and about, even if she beat an icehead in front of me that tried to snatch my pouch of tobacco, my partner has been fine for her entire life and she's a scrapper when she needs to be (apparently youths like to crash parties with a crew and start fights?), but I know too many women back home with horrific stories. Sometimes the feelings of not being able to do anything gets overwhelming. I hope one day I can settle down in a peaceful place with her, Australia is a beautiful country and there's nothing like it, I hope it becomes safer for women. Seeing the news the past few months regarding the women that have been killed by their partner so far in 2024 left me feeling sick in the stomach.

He was found 'not guilty' in a jury trial. He's free to offend again...AND he lives a few streets away. The law is stacked against the true victims. The legal system is rigged. My prosecution lawyer (DPP) did a shit job and would have likely been bullied with threats that she would never progress higher if she didn't let the defence get their way. Lawyers in my family told me that's what happens. Sucks.

Who do you think helped implement it? US imperialism has it's filthy fuckin hands in as many pies as possible. Lots of the fucked up things we see nowadays (and the things we specifically DON'T see) can be traced back the the US sticking it's infested weiner in it at some point. The US has been selling the same lie since before it's formation: We have a duty to improve and help the others. The lie comes when you realize "we" refers to whom ever is most convenient to take advantage to achieve a goal for more money and power; "help" means do what we want with; and "others" are any group of people they can portray as inherently lesser or incapable, someone they can make both a victim and a villain in the same breath. It's done with races, classes, social status, nationalities, religions; you name it. They teach us that the US is noble, so that all shitty behaviour is justified. My country has been convincing people that society couldn't exist without the US being exactly the way it is right now for decades. It's the reason why they get away with spouting shit about "the power of the people" all while doing their damnedest to instate as many totalitarian concepts as possible. It's like telling each of your children they're your favorite, so they'll all be too busy fighting each other to notice you don't care about any of them. Individualism can be so wonderful, but too much leads to gullible ass people just looking out for themselves while everything goes to shit. I do hate it here; but where the fuck else would I go? It won't improve anything.

That judge should probably be investigated if he's consistently giving rapists and the like sentences that are effectively slaps on the wrist. Either he can relate to the criminals, or is working on the behalf of those who do. Assuming this isn't also a result of Australia having shockingly lenient laws regarding such crimes. Also, it's insane that Whistleblowing is treated like more of a crime than the crimes they are revealing. It further gives me the impression that we don't have a government so much as we have a gaggle of spineless corporate puppets and criminals calling the shots. A proper government would be doing everything in its power to raise the country above where it is, and not let it become a de-facto vassal of other nations.
