Jaguar XJR Super (X350) - One of the best V8 bargains around! - BEARDS n CARS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The X350 and X358 shape Jaguar XJ is arguably the last traditional 'Jag' you can buy, but despite being a decidedly old money approach in a modern world, I actually find them to be among my favourite Jaguar's that I've driven.
In particular these supercharged, 400 horsepower 4.2 V8 XJR models represent a truly huge amount of car for the money, from their copious interior space and luggage room, to their Bentley rivalling ride quality, to their unapologetically old school approach to raw torque based performance, their rock bottom used prices in many cases here in the UK make these easily among the most amazing used performance car bargains on the market...

American here! I have found that newer Jaguars in the states are unbelievably reliable. I put over 85k miles on my old '05 XJ8 prior to an unfortunate accident. If you're US state side and do your own maintenance, Ford owned Jaguar / Aston Martin from 2000 - 2009. Jaguar was the "experimental luxury brand" that became "Lincoln Motors" through Ford and thus, every 2004 - 2009 Jaguar utilizes cheap Ford parts... Minus the transmission / old British electrical. They are not "reliable" in the sense of a Ford Focus or an early 2000's Honda Civic. They will take work. These old Jaguars can be worked on and have "cheap" parts vs Jaguars of the past thanks to Ford ownership. I consider them "gear-head" specials, who either want to learn, or want a vehicle they can comfortably drive and learn / work on themselves! My advice is to do your homework, buy one, join a forum, and preserve this wonderful area of "American" British Engineering.

i,ve had three of them. 2, 4 litre ones and 1 4.2, most comfortable cars I've every owned use to think it was the merc 500 sec which I love but XJR are fantastic..When the last one started have expensive problems I sold it and bought an Audi Q5 which is not bad in its own way, every thing works, easy to play the music I want ant my phone connects automatically, but God I miss the Jags, Put a smile on my face every time I stepped into it. Am now thinking of getting another one but they are just a bit too old so am very seriously looking at either the xkr 4.2 or the 5 liter portfolio Xk mainly having watch you clips so thanks for them. the back up plan is possibly the XJ 3 lr but just not that mad on the looks. Im 63 spent mealy all year in hospital, the first 3 weeks in a coma so although the XK is not that practical for me when else am I ever going to own a sports car. Typically now Ive got the time I,m not sure Ive got the money. But it would be so lovely to step into a car again that just makes you grin like a demented Cheshire cat. Very nearly bought one this weekend 5 lr portfolio for 10k withe 39,000 miles but it had the check pedestrian system light on all the time and if this turns out that you have to change all 4 bonnet air bags you can be looking at over 4 k, it was also cat d which I don't mind but they had no info about it. Anyway thanks for the clips really well done and informative

My 2004 XJR has 263k on the odometer, needless to say it been a wonderful car. Cooling hoses are a real problem and there are many of them on the supercharged models and they all fail at different times. You’re absolutely correct about brakes in the air suspension but nothing is terminal. I recently had to do the heater core and a new water pump and I did lose the power steering pump years ago. Otherwise it’s a pretty bomb proof car.

The air suspension can give out a yellow warning light. It’s caused by the pump seals wearing. The pressure doesn’t get up in the defined time, so the ECU sends the warning .. but the suspension is actually operable and ok. It’s £800 for a Jag compressor or £400 for after market. However the seals and piston ring can be replaced with a kit from Bagpipingandy for £25. Just done mine. (2008 X351 XJR) It’s an easy job ( other than a snapped stud and tapping a replacement), the compressor is removed by taking off the front near side wheel and the wheel alignment arch splash guard. The front spoiler under guard doesn’t need to be removed, as indicated in various KZread videos. Don’t buy a Brembo brake version of the XJR. They’re expensive parts to replace/maintain. The standard/OEM discs are cost effective and stop it perfectly. I’ve replaced all corners for £350, all be it sourcing OEM parts though a mate in the trade. 20” alloys need appropriate Pirelli’s but these can be had for

I drive a X350 Super V8 since 2012 and covered 235000 km/145000 mls in that time. It had only minor issues like leaking hoses or failing switches. Only two major thinks went wrong: the air compressor for the suspension and the throttle body. Both were not that expensive. If a had to buy a new throttle body for the Audi A8 I had before I had to spend at least 1500 Euro. For the Jag it was 400. Nothing else wrong with the air suspension (with a distance of more than 185000 mls in total). I am now thinking about selling the car just to purchase a XKR just for a new experience as long as we are allowed to drive big V8s. The XJ X350 is well made, comfortable, and not that expensive to run. One of the best cars I owned if not the best. Go buy one as long as there are good examples around! And if you are looking for a more economical car buy a X350 Diesel.

But if you want something with lasting appeal for everyday driving comfort and style, the X350 has it nailed. The fluid power of the supercharged V8 is truly addictive; instant loveliness when you want to piss a few people off, but then day long wafting when you want to chill, enjoy the sleeper feel and just drive. Don't get me wrong, i've had a stupid number of E39 BMW's and loved them all, the M5 was the one i'd always wanted, a real stunning car and manual, but when it came to grabbing keys, i'd go for the X350 ones probably 80% of the time.

I have the smaller version the xj6 and i did have air suspension problems, the main problem i had was trying to get someone who could read the codes for some reason. Working on the car is easy i changed an air shock in around 30-45minutes very easy! The Air compressors normally need rebuilding if they weren’t as far gone as mine a kit is around £30 also easy to do. Also the ride height sensor (genuine jag was £80) took about half an hour to replace, other than electrical gremlins mechanically they’re fairly nice to work on so far so i wouldn’t be scared of doing work to them yourself! The suspension system itself is a really simple one thats all colour coded. I’d love an xjr but for £1500 i couldn’t complain with a black on red xj6, took it on a 1600mile trip around Scotland and never missed a beat, soaked up the awful roads on skye and was plenty fast enough up the mountains.

I have the X358 facelift, the revised front and rear are (to my eyes) a vast improvement on the X350, lowering the perceived roof height and providing the combination of elegance and malevolence that I expect from an XJ. It has the diesel engine, which when remapped has an additional 25% power and torque over standard that provides immense low and mid end grunt which is where you want it, combined with 45mpg in normal use. It doesn't even sound like a diesel.

As an overall package I would say the XJR is a better car for the kind of daily use I need. The extra rear seat space, boot space, more comfortable ride and lower initial price are superior. I kinda already knew all that though, with the primary thing that swayed me to an XKR being unabashedly - the looks. I knew at the time that practicality would take a hit compared to the previous QP and Touareg, but I didn't think it would be as much of an issue as it turned out to be. Nothing major, just those occasions when the trunk space is a little awkward for shopping, or the rear seats needed to be used for my nephews etc. To be honest the only reason why I still don't own an XJR, and went for a newer Quattroporte instead, is the wow factor. The XJ is a little too much of a sleeper for my current tastes, having already experienced that phase of driving with the Touareg V10.

What totally ruins this car for me is the lack of a limited slip differential. It's pathetic watching ONE tire take the brunt of those 400 horses. Nothing is more lame than a 400 hp "one wheel peel."

I dont think this car ever knew who it was supposed to be . Compared to my beautiful Series 3 V12 (Y'know the one the Lord himself drives) the X350 is a weird kettle of fish , it has looks reminiscent of the Series 3 but somehow misses the target , its an ungainly awkward looking beast that is a world apart from what the Series 3 did so perfectly which was was "grace pace and space" . Mine is total silence and soft doeskin upholstery that delivers a travelling experience un matched by more modern Jags . Dont believe me ? ask Clarkson ! My V12 is the epitome of what car manufactures strive to match but cant and of course , my analogue electrics are all fixable and diy friendly unlike modern digital nonsense . Thankfully, there are many Series 3's coming back from Japan . all in fabulous unmolested condition, .

Having owned one they are not very good. Performance is majorly blunted by a gearbox with very wide ratio and a tall final drive. The gearbox almost always sets off in 2nd gear. I only ever got in 1st if it sensed an incline. You cannot select 1st on the j gate so if you wanted a spirited acceleration out of a junction usually you were left pulling from 2nd gear and honestly it felt really slow. Once moving the kick down say from 3rd to 2nd wasn’t too bad and got a move on but for me I wanted to feel acceleration and it was very disappointing. An XKR 150 is much better in that sense as you are able to select 1st from the paddles. The slow gearbox, tall gearing, tall FD really let this car down.
