Jada Pinkett Smith: Conscious Uncoupling, Dismantle Your Ego & Sit in The Bosom of God

Jada Pinkett Smith (actor, producer, musician, host, author, advocate) joins us to break down her struggles with depression and CPTSD, the status of her marriage to Will Smith, “The Slap”, her ayahuasca experience, and connecting with her higher power. She discusses what it was like growing up in a household with substance abuse struggles, having to sell drugs as a means to provide for herself, and how she met and became close with Tupac. Jada opens up about her panic attacks, suicidal ideations and subsequent attempts, and the taboo nature of therapy in her community. She reflects on her codependent nature, the intoxication of her courtship with Will, the break they took from their marriage, public pressure they’ve faced, the nature of their “open relationship”, and why they never actually divorced. Mayim and Jada discuss the patriarchal components of women being held responsible for the actions of men and Mayim and Jonathan demonstrate somatic tracking.

As someone who spent over ten years serving adults living with mental illness, There are an absolute OCEAN of non-celebrities who have extremely engaging life stories and so, so much wisdom to share. I wish Mayim would leverage her own celebrity for the greater good and begin to interview some of them here and there. It can be done. The SBSK channel on KZread leaps to mind.

Maybe she interviews what we consider “famous people” to break the stereotype that they are infallible. As fans of anyone we set the bar so high that when they fall, it is made out that they are horrible people when in fact they have real life struggles just like any of us. And I think it would be great if she did interview what we consider “regular people” ♥

This is exactly it. There's no need to feel rage towards Jada but most people around her speak poorly of her. She has been caught lying, gaslighting and very importantly, being involved with her son's friend. Having on the show bad people who haven't learned from their tough lives just invalidates what others have lived because of her. She's caused to much damage to her family, it's irreparable. I wouldn't want a selfish person as such to get a platform to speak of themselves ina that's untrue and present themselves as "helping others or trying to share a sob story". This is not it. So many incredible people who have gone through so much and have accountability for their actions. I think fame has this effect on people. Because people hang on their every word, snap pictures of them, ask for autographs, they get this overblown idea of self as someone of high importance and ultimately act and become narcissistic. They are sheltered somewhat in Hollywood and they don't understand that outside of that unreal bubble their words come off hollow and totally revolving around self. Mayim does it too. She wasn't ever the pretty girl but she was the Hollywood star and the smart girl, so she obsesses over herself too but it comes off more neurotic to me than Jada, who I agree comes off like a narcissist. I also think Mayim is interested in the science of therapy whereas Jada loves to talk about herself. Honestly, when she talks I zone out, but I listen to Mayim even if she does remind me of neurotic person, we can all be neurotic sometimes. I would hate to sit and talk about myself for an hour it would be so boring to me but some people love to talk about themselves, clearly.

Mayim....I appreciated this interview and your courage to have it. Trauma and PTSD do paint a different picture in life and isn't always straight-forward- It is definitely complicated. It also affects people differently. This interview with Jada may have gave me a deeper insight into her journey and why she made certain decisions. I don't agree with all the decisions she's made, but I'm not Jada.....I do, however, understand trauma and felt she was being pretty raw and honest. Narcissists or borderlines don't typically set themselves up to be judged - they care more about image and blaming everyone else for their problems which is why they typically don't get help. The way she expressed being detached from the experience with her therapist is definitely part of coping with trauma. And it makes sense to me that she and Will decided to separate so they could step away from the patterns they had together. Deeper level stuff. Especially when she admitted that 99% ended up being what she caused in the relationship. Anyway, I got caught up in all the talk about Jada but this interview gave me a little more understanding. I know that's not a popular things to say right now but I wouldn't want you to shy away from other controversial guests...I think these interviews are important.

I can understand that. Sometimes It's nice to be surprised and not watch a clip before its time in the video. I want to be sure to acknowledge the work that I think goes into putting together an interview and deciding what stays in, and what part of the interview gets included in a clip--it's a lot more work than I know. I have so enjoyed the discussions that Mayim and Jonathan have led. These are really valuable. While I haven't watched every video--I know there are at least a few that I haven't gotten to yet--I think that for each one I did watch, I just let it run from start to finish, and some interviews were just so interesting to me that I've watched them multiple times. People like Jada? You mean trauma survivors? And what about the people that caused HER complex trauma issues? Where does your pity/sympathy for people with mental health issues caused by trauma stop? At Jada? Because it's all a cycle. Those with Complex PTSD also have the potential to harm others with their psychological trauma/damage. Even people without psychological trauma that has created a mental illness or maladaptation can psychologically harm anyone? I guess I don't understand what the point of your comment is other than to try to demonize a human being with a mental health / personality disorder. I guess you, ironically, don't understand the harm your comments cause to others reading it.

They call themselves partners. They're in a partnership to create family, but they're not in a spousal relationship so they don't use those terms for each other. It's not that confusing. You just have a limited capacity to understand things that don't involved you... and that's okay.

Jada needs to be real, and admit that she wasn't in love with Will. She also leaves out the fact that she was coming out of a relationship with ex-NBA player Grant Hill, whom later met and married R&B singer Tamia, and they've been married 25 years. This was around the time she said she felt suicidal (the first time). It sounds like it was a devastating break-up, because she never talks about it, but it's publicly documented. Will and Jada were on the rebound, but it still could've worked, if she had developed and fell in love with Will. That never happened, and that's when she got depressed again, because now she's living with regret. Her and Will also 'drank the kook-aid' of Scientology, which just confused them even more. The Black community noticed the shift in their personalities long ago, as we knew who Jada was before she got with Will (we loved her). We don't know who this woman is.

I second Erin. You are so pure and honest Mayim. Authentic, engaging, relatable. Not sure why you would invite on a guest that quite clearly has an abysmal reputation? I will still watch you, of course, would just recommend guests of a higher moral code. No manipulation. No agenda. Just good, wholesome guests. Nice ones 😁

I cannot believe all the hatred towards Jada. I mean there are many good, supportive comments, too, but good grief. People being so judgy and hateful. She's human. We're all human. Cut her some slack. .... Thank you, MB, for all these podcast/interviews. I love them. As an HSP who has Compl PTSD, who tends to sacrifice her own needs to keep her husband/boyfriend/whatever happy, I found this interview particularly interesting. ... Also, I love Jonathan's nails.

Good-ness! I truly feel nothing for either one, I’m not invested in ‘stars n celebrities’ nor are there any pedastals in my life! Human are human all faults farts and foibles, you’re performing a JOB-period. IF-big point-IF the money is coming in, you’re in, if not-NEXT good try we’ll be in touch bye. As an old fart and empath, most actors, musicians are driven to be better, escape toxicity, leave behind the dysfunction, build their self up; self love self respect-hey I’m not shit and I’ll prove it. Very few are ‘mentally healthy’. Yes while everyone has something a little ‘different’ some issues, spending time to build up your ego while not doing self upliftment self improvement, come crashing down as it’s not sustainable, due to the foundation of yourself not being built. No one teaches this. Blind and bloodied and I’m gonna raise another human?!?! Alas, we do lol. 🤦‍♀️look, lemme sum it up-so beyond tired of people bein in my face every 3 seconds and ffs STFU all I hear is her narcissistic ways🤪. Seemingly you and a few others have through therapy, self healing and discovery, managed better than others. I don’t mean to malign anyone, but intelligence of a higher order helps🧐🤭love all you do and it all helps so very well thank you. I’ve pretty much been a ‘discerner’ rather than judge(at least not character) but actions and words can be changed. In jadas case-I’m judging🤭😳🤨🙏🏻

I kind of don’t like of don’t like her! She’s not a good person! If she really wanted to leave for 6 years as she claimed, what stopped her from doing so? That’s self inflicted pain and suffering. Forgive my grammar, I’m still learning the language!

I totally get what a number of people are saying in the comments cuz i hv been anti Jada for a long time. And after the slap even more so. That said this was the best interview as Mayim did a great job - i was a little concerned when she admired Jada’s roles etc. I think Jada was 80 - 90% truthful. Maybe not but she got to the point of understanding she was the problem not that Will had no part but she was being raw with herself. Now it’s what she does from her on end. I wish her luck. May she continue her progress & self observations & respect & love for those around her cuz it’s not just the awareness but the long term changes that happen.

I agree 100% tat it was a great interview. I do not know Jada on a personal level so it would be wrong for me to judge her based on what the media puts out there. I simply listened to a woman share a bit about her own inner struggle and self realization. You said it so well, “hear clearly and understand”! ♥

in all of Jada's interviews since this book came out, has she said anything good about Will? All I have heard are negative comments about him and how enlightened she is. She is only famous because she is Will's wife. She does not even realize how awful she is coming across to everyone.

Right? The only thing I can even remember her from is one of The matrix movies. She didn't even have a big role and looked absolutely horrible. Every time I've ever seen Jada, I thought what the hell is Will doing being that good looking and rich but marrying golem from Lord of the rings

🌟✨I knew Jada well before she married Will Smith, (A Different World, Jason's Lyric, Menace II Society, A Low Down Dirty Shame etc.) and I think people are forgetting that Will Smith isn't innocent. If Jada is as horrible a person as people like to say, then Will Smith is 10X's worse! He's a controlling narcissistic, egotistical, egomaniacal, "superstar" who tries to force his will on everyone in his life! I mean who the hell marries a woman, then falls in love with a different woman, but refuses to allow his wife to file for divorce from him because he doesn't "believe in divorce" despite the fact that he told his wife he's in love with someone else, then finally agrees to the divorce, then forces the woman he's "in love" with to marry him despite the fact that she's told him plenty of times she doesn't want to get married, and is not sure she even believes in marriage? You can't force people into lives they don't want and expect a happy outcome. And who did all of that? Will Smith. People need to open their eyes and realize in damaged, broken relationships, both of the people involved are damaged and broken, not just one of them.✨🌟

This was hard to watch/listen too. While Jada spoke of taking personal responsibility, she never mentions how her actions have hurt other people. Not just Will, but everyone close to her. She talks about how she realizes she's part of the problem and working on it but never speaks on how. I don't follow celebrity news, I stopped finding it entertaining a long time ago, but what happened between her, and that young man should have been discussed further as that would have been a great example about how her actions had an impact on someone else, that is not Will. She still blames him and makes it sound as though she is trapped through "love and friendship". I don't know their relationship, no one does. However, a person can 100% influence the actions of another in public based on the interactions between them in private. "I didn't want to get divorced and then realize 5 years down the road I was the problem." "I tried for 6 years I'm never going to be rid of this man."

I love your show and watch religiously. I can't watch this but might come back for a different show. That woman has been abusive and cruel to her husband. The slap was so very clearly a trauma response that it broke my heart to see it. I do not support this woman or the pr campaign she's on that gives her validity and credence when less destructive men have been cancelled for less. Her race, her gender, her sex, and her status should not exempt her from the same standards.

I experienced a very similar relationship dynamic. I lost my spouse to suicide in 2016. A lot of things led up to it ,some known, some not. Being blamed and villanized is a truly horrible attack on a person’s character and there is literally nobody in the world you need to speak to about it than the person that is not there. Emotionally disconnecting is not so different.
