Jackals Out of Africa - Go Wild

Фильм және анимация

In some cultures, jackals were pursued and condemned as pests that fed on parasite-infested carcasses. In others, such as Ancient Egypt, they were divinely celebrated. This documentary accompanies a young scientist, who is drawn to these mythical mammals, and takes us on a journey to explore golden jackals, from Egypt to the barren hills of Greece.

The haunting cries of a jackal sends chills down one's spine, a powerful song! African Golden Jackals are apparently African Golden Wolves, but I don't think that then turns Anubis, who was *originally* inspired by what we *thought* were jackals, into a wolf. I continue to feel that Anubis is still the mighty jackal god he is and always was. Also, Anubis more resembles the Black Backed Jackal much more than the actual Egyptian Jackal. Coincidence, or something more?

They have definitely moved north, here in Denmark a jackal was shot this month during a fox hunt. In 2015, a specimen was run down by a car, and in 2016 a specimen was photographed about 150 km from the location where the aforementioned jackal was shot, across a body of water (which it must've crossed to get there in any case, as it is an island).

+LaStriata It now seems that both the golden jackal (Canis aureus) and the gray wolf (C. lupus) are found in both Africa and Eurasia. The African wolf (C. lupus lupaster) was once thought to be a golden jackal, but is now considered the smallest subspecies of gray wolf, even smaller than the Arabian wolf (C. lupus arabs). However, there are still golden jackals in Africa as well.

+LaStriata Wow, thanks for that reference. So it turns out the gray wolf (Canis lupus) is not in Africa after all. Rather, there's the Eurasian golden jackal (C. aureus) and the African golden wolf (C. anthus), which is more closely related to the gray wolf and dog than the Eurasian golden jackal (p. 2160-2161 from Koepfli et al. 2015). Great stuff.

Note how we are continually told in the film about how difficult it is to even see a jackal and at the same time we are watching jackals act out the details of the narrative. Hollywood-style filmmaking at its most disingenuous. Nice photos, though.

Wild wolves and domestic wolves (dogs) are both in the species Canis lupus and can freely interbreed. Canis lupus can hybridize with coyotes (C. latrans); the offspring are not sterile, but have may reduced fertility, with gene introgression being fine, but repeated hybridization leading to sterility. Canis lupus can also hybridize with golden jackals (C. aureus), Simien jackals (C. simensis), and golden wolves (C. antheus), but they may be sterile - usually males - in accordance with Haldane's Rule. These are all known as the "wolf-like" canids, and there has never been a recorded instance of their hybridizing with other canids, such as dholes, Cape hunting dogs, other jackals, foxes, or South American canids.

JACKALS ARE POSITIVE ENTITIES AND PROTECTORS OF PEOPLE It's sad that ppl labeled the Jackal as a negative force- a devilish malevolent type of being. Not so, in Egypt in the year eleventy blah blah B.C. Jackals were worn on the heads of Egyptians after the passing of loved ones, the half Jackals were drawn out in text writings on papaya paper from the book of the dead and scribed on the sides of tombs-was their position held in the nether world (after world). The half human deity with a Jackal for a head was an otherworldly protector of those passed into the nether world. Even during the process of answering for both the good and the bad ppl deemed it necessary to be escorted by the Jackal headed human through the judgment stage and is a mighty protector from the crocodiles who sit next to the judgement helper, ready to devour those terrible sinners particularly when the ''Jackal Deity'' is not supporting a person thru crossover and is absent. which was not likely. All these beliefs are those of Egyptians from that century. Also Egyptians state thru text that the Jackal is in no way a bad demon and does not stand next to Satan- or any other Angels or Gods, for the Jackals protection it walks alone until it is summoned to escort a person who is getting ready to enter netherworld thru several doors, each going thru room after room, after room until the end of a Hall. Anytime a full Jackal is depicted as a statue, sitting upright near a door IT IS A PROTECTOR FROM EVIL FOR THAT SPECIFIC HOUSE. Along w the Jackal statue, Egyptians also hung a gazelle and a lizard in their front windows, not sure why those other two were mentioned but it has smthg to do with protection......; /

Actually, coyotes and golden jackals are more closely related to each other than either is to the grey wolf, in fact, the Canis genus is actually completely polyphyletic, as four extant species that were never considered conspecific with the grey wolf in either way are actually relocated to two separate genera, Flavocyon for the Common Golden Wolf (Flavocyon lupaster) and the Ethiopian Golden Wolf (Flavocyon simensis) and Prolupus for the Golden Jackal (Prolupus aureus) and the Coyote (Prolupus latrans), similarly, the extinct taxon Xenocyon is also a separate genus from Canis, while the genus Prolupus (Laurasian Jackals/Holarctic Jackals) is an official sister genus to Canis (True Wolves and Oceanian Wild Dogs), the genus Flavocyon (Golden Wolves/African Wolves) has no close relation to the Canis genus at all and is therefore nestled outside of the Cuon/Prolupus/Canis clade, in fact the genus Flavocyon is actually more derived than the other two african genera being Lupulella (African Jackals) and Lycaon (Painted Dogs) but is technically basal to the Cuon/Prolupus/Canis clade, the only eight extant members of the Canis genus are actually now the Grey Wolf (Canis lupus (cladistically including the Domestic Dog (Canis lupus familiaris))), the White Wolf (Canis albus), the Sea Wolf (Canis crassodon), the Eastern Wolf (Canis lycaon), the Red Wolf (Canis rufus), the Pale-Footed Wolf (Canis pallipes), the New Guinea Singing Dog (Canis hallstromi), and the Dingo (Canis dingo), thus making six extant genera within the subtribe Canina (Old World Wolf-Like Canines).

+Hyena And Jackal Channel And black-backed jackals and side-striped jackals need their own genus, or Canis is a paraphyletic genus. Either that or we fold the Dhole and African wild dog into Canis. The Ethiopian wolf used to be called a jackal as well.

African golden jackals are still Canis Aureus. The African Golden Wolf (Canis Anthus) is a different species of animal that is distinct from both jackals and wolves. Canis anthus Lupaster is the african wolf.

never heard of them here in sweden, and can't find anything in the archives! the sea would be a problem...they have spotted and killed a couple in denmark though....maybe they confuse the country in the film!?

Also couldn't find anything on jackals in sweden. I believe the denmark incidents happened quite some time after this documentary aired (around 2007). that being said golden jackals have been spotted in finland, so its possible they could reach souther sweden, though its unlikely they could spread very far given the climate of the northern scandinavian countries and the healthy wolf population.

Actually they're called Elk in eurasia. When europeans came to north america they named the wrong species elk, as the wapiti is actually a close relative of the red deer of europe, whilst the moose and elk of eurasia are in the same genus. they were once the same species but are now split. So no, there aren't moose in sweden.

The moose was originally called "elk" in Europe, as reflected in the scientific name for moose, Alces alces. For some reason, American colonists adopted the Algonquin word for the animal, "moose," while giving the name "elk" to the American elk, also known by its Sioux name, "wapiti." Why this happened is anyone's guess.
