J Swapping the CL9 TSX to Make Our Own First Gen TSX Type S

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

J Swapping the CL9 TSX
By Aaron Gaghagen and Brian Gillespie
Type S is Acura's top version of each model. There was the TL Type S, CL Type S, RSX Type S, CSX Type S, MDX Type S, TLX Type S and the ultimate Type S, the NSX Type S. But when Acura replaced the RSX with the TSX they didn't create a Type S variant. Some believe this was because they feared cannibalizing sales of the class leading TL. Well, we are here to fix this with our TSX. We are going to shoehorn our J32 into the CL9 with hopes of building a great endurance race car.

    Thanks, guys, for putting this together. I will be one of your first customers for the mounts/brackets, axles, and any sort of plug and play wiring kit. Have a J35A8 from an RL sitting in storage with the aluminum TL subframe, but now know to probably put the subframe up for sale. You've paved the way for this swap, and for that am truly grateful.

    Interesting swap I have a 08 tsx 6speed, a few guys in Canada did this swap 10-15 years ago, they were very secretive about the swap info. Definitely something I’d entertain doing but a J37 variant is more appealing to me. Newer engine and more displacement. Making 300+ WHP NA without opening up the motor and keeping the reliability is a win in my book.

    Love it. I'm all about the torque. The A2 was very nice but only after 5000 rpms. I built my own TSX based off the A-spec Canadian TSX, a k24a from JDM accord type-s with the same magnesium RBB-X fuel/exhaust system, and a gearset from an RSX Type-S. WIth a competition clutch/flywheel a header and tune. Makes just under 208 whp but over 190+ ft/lbs of torque. Pulls like an H22a hatchback from back in the day, like a freight train.

    Love the topic! I'd always looked at the TSX vs TL and wondered about their near crossover in size appearance, etc, while the V6 vs I4 was the most distinguishing thing between them. Stuffing a TL Type-S drivetrain into the slightly nimbler TSX would make for really sporty, dare I say, FWD super-saloon sedan. Edit* lol, Brian made sure to proclaim the future of the vehicle...shame we have to deal with this level of pettiness out of today's EPA.

    Why not just use some aftermarket upper A Arms for the TSX. Then you have the ability to correct the camber with the slightly wider lower arm mounting position. Then its fitment should be more aggressive too since it would give a similar effect to adding a wheel spacer. If it’s too close to the fender you can always choose an aftermarket wheel with a more suitable offset. Then you could have had the nice aluminum subframe instead of the stamped steel one.

  • @VTECAcademy

    @VTECAcademy

    4 ай бұрын

    Couple of reasons why I don’t do that. First off it actually changes the geometry. Yes, it makes it wider. Yes longer control arms will allow you to control camber, but it does in fact, change the geometry, so the bump steer wheel not be the same as it is in a stock car. That said the other reason is that’s more expense. I’m gonna make a mount kit, so why don’t I make a mount kit that works with the stock subframe.

    Question you may be able to answer, is the TL automatic subframe the same as the TL manual trans subframe ? I've always been told they are different but never compared the two subframes side by side. (Some say there is no difference while others say they are different) ps love the J series content and look forward to your project TL build.

    This set up is like putting a K24A4 into an EG as opposed to a B16 or B18C. It’s the same horsepower as a B16, about 160, but it will out accelerate the B18C because of the low end torque.
