J Swapping the CL9 TSX to Make Our Own First Gen TSX Type S

J Swapping the CL9 TSX
By Aaron Gaghagen and Brian Gillespie
Type S is Acura's top version of each model. There was the TL Type S, CL Type S, RSX Type S, CSX Type S, MDX Type S, TLX Type S and the ultimate Type S, the NSX Type S. But when Acura replaced the RSX with the TSX they didn't create a Type S variant. Some believe this was because they feared cannibalizing sales of the class leading TL. Well, we are here to fix this with our TSX. We are going to shoehorn our J32 into the CL9 with hopes of building a great endurance race car.

Thanks, guys, for putting this together. I will be one of your first customers for the mounts/brackets, axles, and any sort of plug and play wiring kit. Have a J35A8 from an RL sitting in storage with the aluminum TL subframe, but now know to probably put the subframe up for sale. You've paved the way for this swap, and for that am truly grateful.

I love how all this j series content is now popping up after I buy a base tl 6mt it really helps
Interesting swap I have a 08 tsx 6speed, a few guys in Canada did this swap 10-15 years ago, they were very secretive about the swap info. Definitely something I’d entertain doing but a J37 variant is more appealing to me. Newer engine and more displacement. Making 300+ WHP NA without opening up the motor and keeping the reliability is a win in my book.

Loving the TSX content! Have one myself. Keep it up!
The series I was waiting for !
Love it. I'm all about the torque. The A2 was very nice but only after 5000 rpms. I built my own TSX based off the A-spec Canadian TSX, a k24a from JDM accord type-s with the same magnesium RBB-X fuel/exhaust system, and a gearset from an RSX Type-S. WIth a competition clutch/flywheel a header and tune. Makes just under 208 whp but over 190+ ft/lbs of torque. Pulls like an H22a hatchback from back in the day, like a freight train.

@@VTECAcademy everyone these days is too used to "Bolt on, Fits your car" from amazon and ebay and it really doesn't just "bolt on".... and they are perfectly happy with that.
Can’t wait for this!
My best friend, who is a mechanical engineer, and myself are building a mid engine tube chassis 2 seater car that will have a J32a2/ATC6 combo. I'm happy that we aren't the only ones with love for the J. I'm also a big fan of v6/mt sedans as my daily is a 4th gen Camry that was a factory 1mz/E153 combo that I did a 2GR/E153 swap on. I put 350k on the stock combo and an additional 120k on the swap so far.
I’d love to see an update on this build
I have a 04 tsx and a 03 accord v6. Both automatic. I was thinking of straight swapping everything from the accord engine / subframe/ harness / steering rack into the tsx. Do you think that will make it a little easier? This video made me think It might not be as plug and play as I thought it could be. Oh and I’d have to swap the immobilizer as well.
MAKW J SWAPS GREAT AGAIN!!!
It's a sign... Time for me to buy that CL Type S 6 speed
I love watching your videos, they are very educational, I have a 2016 accord withe cvt (sadly). I hope you guys make a complete video and maybe even mounting kits for a V6 (manual transmission) swap for the sedan, That is my goal for my car to have it swapped with the J series manual transmission from the coupe.
I had an 03 accord, V6 coupe but sadly an auto. It had over 230k miles when I got it, and it was still a great car. I did do motor mounts and valve cover gaskets to it, and those mounts look very familiar lol.
Man I love what he does
Thank you so much for this video. Now I want to do this swap. So, I'm guessing Hasport will make mounts for this swap? Thank you again for this video.
you guys got those fast and furious jetta front brakes haha. Nice one, wish we got the v6 in manual here.
Love the topic! I'd always looked at the TSX vs TL and wondered about their near crossover in size appearance, etc, while the V6 vs I4 was the most distinguishing thing between them. Stuffing a TL Type-S drivetrain into the slightly nimbler TSX would make for really sporty, dare I say, FWD super-saloon sedan. Edit* lol, Brian made sure to proclaim the future of the vehicle...shame we have to deal with this level of pettiness out of today's EPA.

"one of those not Honda cars" Lol love it.
Whats crazy is this sold as the Honda Accord in Japan, whie the US Honda Accord sold under the inspire name in Japan, and they had a Euro R model that came with a "high performance" K20A engine rated at 217 hp and 152 lb⋅ft torque. But they really should've put the J series in it since it was meant to be the performance version.
I was wondering when you guys would get around to this. There’s a guy from the old forums, Fred from Canada.. he has been doing this swap for ages
Why not use the Accord subframe and use the upper control arms that match? Add power and track width, lighter subframe, and figure out a widebody?

I'm surprised they didn't make a "base tsx" with an accord k24 and keep the better k24 for a "tsx type s". TL-S v6 would be awesome too
@MrBluePoochyena
4 ай бұрын
We got the TSX as Accord in EU, and the base (Comfort/Sport Trim) came with a 2.0 K20A6 (155hp 140ftlb), There's also a N22A1 Diesel with 140hp 250ftlb (Sport/Executive) and the top trim was a K24A3 190hp 171ftlb (Executive/Type S)
Definitely would have just used the accord or TL subframe. Adjustable upper arms would have been a much easier solution to correct camber. Or just keep the negative camber since any real track build you’ll want at least -3 degrees up front.
Was hoping it would be as easy as a kswap

I always thought they should have did a TSX type s but I think they should have used the 2.3 turbo engine from the Acura RDX
Great idea but the characteristics of the J dont do it for me personally. Love your channel and keep the vids coming
Why not just use some aftermarket upper A Arms for the TSX. Then you have the ability to correct the camber with the slightly wider lower arm mounting position. Then its fitment should be more aggressive too since it would give a similar effect to adding a wheel spacer. If it’s too close to the fender you can always choose an aftermarket wheel with a more suitable offset. Then you could have had the nice aluminum subframe instead of the stamped steel one.
@VTECAcademy
4 ай бұрын
Couple of reasons why I don’t do that. First off it actually changes the geometry. Yes, it makes it wider. Yes longer control arms will allow you to control camber, but it does in fact, change the geometry, so the bump steer wheel not be the same as it is in a stock car. That said the other reason is that’s more expense. I’m gonna make a mount kit, so why don’t I make a mount kit that works with the stock subframe.
I Hilariously guessed 487 just to go against the grain 😂 was surprisingly close
can we get another video on this
