Also gaslighting jk is a bit of a ‘power move’ oop ‘Nobody is saying sex isn’t real’ yeah sure guess all those people and articles saying ‘sex is a spectrum like gender’ just didn’t exist then. And no sex isn’t a binary. Gametes are not on a spectrum. This does not erase the lived experience and validity of intersex people. (I don’t think he did this on purpose but it just exemplifies how misinformation is rampant in every corner of the internet, whether we like it or not)

@@m0tm0t2 ok sorry but saying that sex is a spectrum does not mean sex isn't real. You can't deny that there are physiological features on the human body which are caused by your constelation of chromosomes, your sex-specific hormones and so on. Sex is real. But this does not mean it has to be binary. Because it isn't. Intersex people exist and imo saying sex is binary DOES erase them. And not just intersex people: many of these physiological differences wich define sex are clearly on a spectrum. For example body hair: where would you draw the line between male and female in regard to body hair? It is obvious that a lot of body hair is rather a male feature. But women have body hair, some women may even have more body hair than some men. You could say the same thing about broad hips, a more prominent jawline, the position of your hairline, the voice, some parts of your brain and many more things. Male and female are just the two extremes of this spectrum. This is not an opinion, this is the scientific reality. Deal with it

@@naryainc well this is in fact a question you should ask yourself. What does the word woman mean? Many people thought about it, including scientists, and they came to the conclusion that defining the word woman as a person who has XX chromosomes is not a good idea. Because it ignores the lived reality of trans people and intersex people. Trans women face in many aspects the same problems caused by sexism like cis women. Of course it depends a little bit on how well they pass, but trans people just live as their genders, are treated like cis people of their gender and so on. Why is it absurd then to define the word woman based on gender and not sex? I think it is not absurd at all, I think it is quite reasonable, but it seems like you disagree with me and the largest part of the scientific community, people who think about these topics as a part of their job. Edit: just corrected typos

If you have mostly old, rich, white guys making the laws then I wonder who they're going to favor and who they're going to try to marginalize. 🤔Especially, in a society that places such high value on religion, which is really just an elaborate Fairy Tale. I mean really if you read a story with an omniscient, omnipotent being that can be 3 "people" who then proceeds to "rule and punish " others you would think I was reading some high fantasy novel.

One of the unfortunate realities of marginalization and oppression is that those who are oppressed may not be up to advocating for themselves, let alone advocating for a whole group with their identity, they are going through their own trauma, and frankly, those who need to hear them aren't likely to, not in any substantial way. I can barely deal with my own trauma, so taking up the mantle for others going through the same often feels like too much, I want to help, but I have to share the load with others that have inroads to people who aren't buried in their own trauma. The dominant group that oppresses others, even if they don't realize it, need to take this seriously, need to be responsible for changing the structures that keep the oppressions going, but for the most part they won't listen to or hear anyone but themselves, especially not without making inroads, without being woken up to the oppression they are sheltered from. Sometimes the marginalized need bridges with members of the dominant group to even be heard or taken seriously. The biggest problem there is that those trying to build bridges need to do so in a way that allows marginalized voices and perspectives to be heard, to be taken seriously, and to begin to build some clout, so the marginalized can begin to lead the discussions and the advocacy from their own perspectives and for their purposes. Not everyone agrees with that, but many feel like that is needed, and some of those in dominant oppressor groups are beginning to be woken up and feel the need to try to help, they just need to remember to help build those bridges, but then get out of the way, so it's not only their voices and their stories being heard.

For real, it makes no damn sense. I’m so scared to live my life and be myself as someone outside the binary that I’ve forced myself to stay in the closet for years now, even when that brought me shame so immense I didn’t want to be alive anymore until I stopped forcing myself to deny my identity and do things I knew I despised in acts of self-hatred designed to prove to myself that I just wanted attention. My life would be _way_ better if I could choose to be cis. I’d never choose this life if I didn’t feel like I had to in order to not self-destruct.

So none of you in this thread think there are any conflicts between trans rights and women's rights? Say in the 2018 proposals in policy and legislation for the Equality Act and the Gender Recognition Act in the UK? And none of you are bothered by the undefined linguistic concepts used in the slogan; "transwomen are women"? What are your definitions of 'transwomen'; 'are'; and 'women' when used in this way? Are we talking literally or figuratively? How do we talk about women who are biologically female if the word woman includes males? Do you support the concept of self-ID instead of medical diagnosis for GD and for legal sex change? Do you not see that the implication of enshrining both gender identity and sex in law as it is currently proposed makes the law unclear and the two protected characteristics cancel each other out? Are you willing to sacrifice the protected characteristic of sex (female and male) over the protected characteristic of gender identity? How do you even define gender identity (and do not use the word gender to explain what gender identity is because then I'll just ask you to define gender again because I don't know what you mean when you say gender)?

People get mad about more inclusive terms “erasing womanhood” as if womanhood is just encapsulated by menstruation and pregnancy. Womanhood is about so much more, and being inclusive doesn’t erase anyone’s existence! Being exclusive is the thing that’s erases people’s existence. Also, it’s not like the term is specifically for trans or non-binary people. It’s for *everyone*.

I wanted to know what organizations Rowling is involved in because she said she supports trans people but I’m not finding any evidence of that. She supports women’s right and children. There is evidence of that in the organizations she supports. That’s great! I also never meant that she was obligated to give money to lgbt organizations. I’m just looking for evidence that she has given some kind of support for trans people, as she did not say what she has done in support in her essay or anywhere else that I can find. I also don’t condone death/rape threats, in this scenario of any other. From where you are standing, you’re not seeing any evidence of transphobia. From where I’m standing, I’m not seeing any evidence of support. There. We disagree. Now chill out.

i really like that you consistently remind viewers to look at everything in context - if you were to take each thing rowling says/does for itself, she may not come off as transphobic. it’s really the culmination of everything she says as a whole that makes her transphobic - just like how people will say they aren’t racist because they dont openly despise minorities, but will turn around and grab their purses every single time they see a black/brown person, or consistently vote against the interests of minorities. you cannot manifest trans activism by saying you support trans people. it must be consistently shown through your actions and words. and also - if the community you are trying to support tells you you’re supporting them in the wrong way, fix it for fucks’ sake

She very much looks transphobic to many of us even without the context. All the things she's said on the matter are arguments we've heard time and time again as justification to erase and or walk all over us. People who don't think she comes off as transphobic at first glance are either uneducated on the matter or don't care all that much about trans people. Not being educated is not bad, of course, I'm not equating that to being a bigot but they have similar outcomes when uneducated people misunderstand what trans people go through and stand for.

You're the weird one if that's where your mind goes when you hear that. They just mean they are FEMALES which is true. People who menstruate are all females. Not all females menstruate but those who do are all females. And woman is a word that has always been used to refer to them in a more humanizing way since it literally means "human female". And accepting trans people doesnt mean that suddenly everyone has to ignore facts and reject biology just because some people's feelings might get hurt or "triggered" by the truth.

The entitlement of successful people to insert themselves in conversations that they're wholly unequipped to participate in is truly infuriating. To put the topic at hand aside and forgive this bigot her resistance to thought evolution, what simply grinds my gears are the logical fallacies in her writing. She introduces terms in her arguments willy-nilly, before properly defining them, jumping from one unsubstantiated conclusion to another. I'd expect an accomplished writer to be aware of the fact that she has to finish her thoughts on paper in order for a reader to understand her point, ESPECIALLY when writing an essay. She'd fail a first year philosophy course in a heartbeat. One last thing, can we please find another term for TERFs? These people are not feminists, because feminism in modern age is intersectional. We try to include everyone that suffers under patriarchy and that includes cis men too. Feminism doesn't exist without trans people or cis people fighting against the system that oppresses us all. Everyone needs feminism. Calling someone a TERF is too kind and giving them some credit which is unwarranted taking in account their position. *drops dead from a long-winded rant*

I myself have been uncomfortable in my womanhood. I still am sometimes. But I know for a fact I am not trans. I thought for a short time maybe I was nonbinary but that wasn't true for me either. While I am sometimes uncomfortable in my womanhood, I've listened to many trans people's experiences and understand that what I feel is absolutely not the same. Trans people have a different experience with gender and sex than I do. Although, obviously I can still relate to trans women because they are women just like me. I have been misgendered too, due to my androgyny and tomboy-like way of dressing. But that's really only a tiny snippet of the actual trans experience. You can't possibly understand what a trans person feels and goes through unless you LISTEN TO THEM. Crazy, I know. The transgender experience matters so much. Their stories matter. All you have to do is listen. They are the backbone of the community so many of us are a part of.

I can still support communities without being a part of it when i think they being treated unjustly. Just because I choose to support someone doesn't mean I am that person... if I support trans rights doesn't mean I'm trans... I want to support them because they r being treated unjustly nd I want to be their ally. Just in case someone needs to hear this .... y'all are valid ❤❤

to use the fact that women are called hateful slurs as an excuse for transphobia is not only glossing over the hate and bigotry that trans people, especially trans women, face just for being themselves, it also makes absolutely no sense. if your whole rationale for excluding trans people is that their existence invalidates cis women's experiences and struggles, backing that up by invalidating trans women's struggles essentially nullifies your entire argument.

Another major problem I have with some of her tweets as an AFAB non-binary person is that she is implying that people who are assigned female and then transition don't have to deal with the struggles of women. I am underage and can't transition yet, and while I present myself as androgynous, a lot of the time I still end up looking like a woman and am treated as such. Obviously, AFAB non-binary people and trans men are raised as women based on our sex, and because of this we know how dangerous the world is for women. While I'll never know what it feels like to be a woman - because I am not one - I will always know what it's like to be treated as a woman, to be catcalled, to not walk alone at night. I am a feminist, and most feminists I align myself with argue that feminism is a statement of equality. I believe that women and men should be equal, and this includes trans people as well. No one is denying sex is real, but there is more to my identity than sex.

I totally agree with everything you said but I think we shouldn't blame her for the lack of representation in the HP books. I grew up loving the books (as many people did) and we have to recognize that they weren't written in 2020. The world really changed in the last 20 years. We should still talk about how some of the characters are strongly based on stereotypes because it's important to recognize that, but we shouldn't hate her for that. Instead we totally can hate her actions now.

When I first read her twitter thread, I really didn’t understand what was wrong with anything she said. The essay that is highlighted in this video however, actually explains what she was trying to say. I agree that the terms “menstruators” and “people with vulvas” are awkward and not really necessary, but the whole “I’m worried that scary men will come into the women’s bathroom because trans is now accepted” makes no sense to me. If predators want to prey on women in bathrooms, they would do it anyway.

Suuuuch a good vid, so many important things here, I’m a cis het woman and I have NEVER felt like saying “people who menstruate” or any other inclusive language was degrading or humiliating. On the contrary I use these terms myself because my best friend is a non-binary trans person and I’m hyper-aware of just how much the gender binary has permeated everything and intentionally leaves them out. I want a world that is safer and inclusive for all persons but ESPECIALLY non-binary, gender nonconforming, and trans people.
