You know, I sadly never studied Schenkerian analysis. I guess I saved some tuition money, and figured it out on my own over the years! 😂 Thanks for tuning in.
Occurs to me that the process of building a solo is similar. Create a framework/melody (to get the chords under my fingers in my case) then add the embellishments or moving tones as needed.

For sure! Coltrane’s solo here had ALL this underlying it. Some of it may have been conscious on his part, but a lot of it was likely just “good melodic instincts.”
